Gifted
muscian and artist, Larry Hoge was born on 12
December 1903 in St. Louis, Missouri and was the
son of Emma Louise (Pilcher) and Albert J. Hoge.
Their one older child Helen died in her infancy
before age three.
His
parents were divorced when he was young, and he
grew up with his mother. He married Ellen
Florence (Behan) in 1930, she the daughter of
James and Bridget (Hewitt) both of St. Louis.
During
World War II he and Ellen both found work in the
war industry...they worked for Carter Carburetor
in St. Louis, building carburetors for airplane
engines. After the war Larry moved his family
(including Emma) to Conception, MO after Ellen's
brother Jim joined the Monastery there and became
a Catholic Monk. Ellen took a job at the Abbey,
and Larry found a job as an orderly fifty miles
away in St. Joe. He commuted there five days a
week for twenty years in his VW Bug. He bought a
new one every year.
Larry
was killed in his VW just outside of Conception
on U.S. Hwy 136 on August 21st, 1971. A Plymouth
driven by a drunk driver swerved into Larry's
lane to avoid a stalled motorcycle...hitting
Larry's car and killing him instantly. Larry and
my his grandson Tom had just made the two mile
drive home from the Abbey where they had gone to
confession.
Larry
and Ellen were the parents of one child, Mary
Bridget Hoge who was born on the 5th of July 1935
and passed away on 22 November 1996. Mary was the
wife of Leroy Stock and mother of Mike, Daniel,
Lisa, Ellen, John, Thomas, Jane & Amy Stock.
