| Born
in New Philadelphia, Tuscarawas County,
Ohio on the 29th of April, Eli removed
to Naples in Scott County, Illinois with his
family in about 1865 but did not remain with
his family for very long. In
1878, after the family moved to Kansas
following the death of his father, Eli
married Elizabeth Green and his brother
Oliver married her sister Alice three years
and four months later. Together, with
their children William and Cynthia (Eli and
Lizzie had lost their daughter Jenny in 1880
and twins Jasper and Mary in 1881), they
traveled on the Oregon Trail, stopping for a
few weeks in Oregon to purchase provisions
for the winter, and then continued to Latah
County, Idaho where they settled in Moscow.
Eli
worked as a bridge builder and had with
Lizzie four more children - Minnie in 1886,
Pearl in 1888, Charles in 1891, and Ruth in
1897 - all of whom were born in Moscow before
the family moved to Little Bear Ridge in
1909.
Eli
lived the remainder of his life at Little
Bear Ridge where he passed away at his home
on December 8th. His obituary listed
his wife, two daughters and a son surving him
- these being wife Lizzie who passed away in
1939; daughter Mrs. Minnie (Charles) Teel of
Wellington, Nevada; Mrs. Ruth (Laurence) Huff
of Moscow; son Charles Harris of Troy; and
brother Emmet of American Ridge. - His
son William H. Harris, a Vertan of the
Spanish American War, preceded him in death
in 1915; and daughter Mrs. Cynthia (Bill)
Crowley had passed away in 1925.
