| The daughter of Amos
Halstead and Martha (Shepherd), Roxana
was born (according to her age at death
of 74y 7m 23 d) on 24 Sep 1810 in Cayuga
County, New York in about 1808. She was
married to William Rexford Knowlton in
Clifton Park, Saratoga Co., New York in
July of 1828. Residents of Byron, Genesse
Co., New York, Roxana and William were
enumerated in the 1850 census with their
five daughters. In 1860 William is listed
as a butcher, and three of his daughters
are school teachers. The eldest, Martha
Ann, was married in 1852 and had removed
with her husband to Schuyler Co., New
York. By 1870 all of their
daughters have moved out, but in 1880 their daughter
Harriet (who was still employed as a
teacher) was living with them in their
Stafford home.
William
died on 12 Mar 1884 at the age of 77
years in Morganville, Genesee Co., New
York, and Roxana, according to her death certificate, on 17 May 1885.
Both are laid to rest in the Old Section
of Stafford Cemetery, Stafford, Genesee
County, New York as is their unmarried
daughter, Hattie J. Knowlton.
Of further
interest to the Halstead researchers, it
should be noted that Susannah (Halstead),
the daughter of James Halstead and
Elizabeth (Teed or Tid) and wife of
Richard Peters, was the sister of Amos,
and therefore the aunt of Roxana.
