Fanny Daily, the daughter of David and
Mary Ann Parker-Daily, married William Richard
Goodall in about 1872 in Clark County,
Indiana. William was born in or about 1852
in the District of Columbia, and died in San
Francisco in 1927. He had been a cartoonist
for the Chicago Tribune, and so they had met and
were entertained by the Hearst Family. When Fanny had married him
she was under the impression that she was
disowned by her family and not welcome back home,
so she never returned and received her share of
the property, money or possessions. Sadly
enough, after giving up her family for him, she
suspected him of unfaithfulness and upon
discovering her suspicions were true, divorced
him, but never found another love.
They were listed
in the 1880 Clark County census records which was
taken on the 2nd of June, living two doors down
from James and Charlotte (Daily) Boyer: Listed as
Goodall, William age 28, Professional Skater,
born (1852) in the District of Columbia - Father
born in England, Mother born in Ireland; (Daily),
Fannie 27, Keeping House, born (1853) in Indiana
to Indiana-born parents; Goodall, Willie age 7
born in Illinois (1873); Naomi age 4 born in
Indiana (1876); and Eva age two born in Indiana
(1878).
As noted, census
records confirm that his William Goodall's father
William was born in England - family records
stating the date of his birth as the 17th of May
1831 and that he was an actor who played
"The Drunkard" in P.T. Barnum's first
production of the play which ran for some time
and was reproduced from time to time in other
places, one being in Los Angeles. He was
also said to have been a friend of Edgar Allen
Poe (1809-1849) who was the child of itinerant
actors who had been raised by John Allan, and was
said to have enjoyed many of William's card
games. William Goodall died in the District
of Columbia on 13 January 1856.
William's mother Fanny Riley, was
according to census records, born in Ireland in
about 1834. A search for some of the Rileys
in Clark County, located a few families.
The eldest Riley found, however, was born in
Kentucky in 1809 and therefore does not appear to
be of Fanny's immediate family. Also a
Henry Riley born in Germany in 1810 who was
married to an Anna K. and had a daughter Lenora;
and a John Riley born in Indiana in 1821.
The first Riley
located in the records that was born in Ireland,
was Cornelius Riley who was born there in about
1828. He was listed as head of household in
the 1870 census taken the 18th of July, and was
living with his family in Jeffersonville a few
houses down from John Weir and his wife
Margaret. Listed as a 42 year-old laborer
born in Ireland to parents of foreign birth; and
listed with him was an Ann, possibly his mother
aged 80, who was also born in Ireland.
There was also
listed in the 1860/1870 census a Patrick Riley
who was born in Ireland in about 1835. He
was listed in Jeffersonville Twp in July of 1860
as 24 years of age; and in the 1870 census of
Jeffersonville, as a 35 year-old clerk with real
estate valued at $1,500 and personal estate
valued at $200. He was listed as a U.S.
citizen born in Ireland to parents of foreign
birth. Listed in his household was his wife
Mary age 35 - also born in Ireland to parents of
foreign birth; daughter Catherine age 6 born in
KY; daughter Mary Ann age 4 born in IN; and son
Thomas age two born in Indiana.
