It is said
that the Fiskes in America are descended from an
ancient family of Laxfield, England and had fled
from religious persecution and then later
returned to England. Many of the members of this
family in America for centuries had been
prominent in private and public affairs as
clergymen, lawyers, physicians, financiers,
soldiers, merchants, teachers and professors in
colleges, philanthropists and patriots.
Lord Symond
Fiske, a grandson of Daniel, was said to have
been Lord of the Manor of Standhaugh and lived in
the reign of Henry IV and VI (1399-1422) and that
he had married Susannah Smith, and after her
death, a woman named Katherine. His will was
dated 22 December 1463 and was proved at Norwich
on February 26 1463/64. He had been survived by
five children: William,
Jaffrey, John, Edmurd and Margaret.
|
| |
| WILLIAM
FISKE, his
eldest son, was born at Standhaugh, county of
Suffolk, England and had lived during the reign
of Henry VI, Edward IV, Richard III and Henry VII
and had died about 1504. He was survived by his
wife Joann of Norfolk who later died in 1505
leaving seven children: William, Augustine, Simon, Robert, John, Margery and
Margaret. |
| |
| SIMON
FISKE, who
was the fourth son of William and Joann (Lyme),
who stated in his will which was made July 10,
1536, that he desired to be buried at the chancel
end of the church of All Saints in Laxford. He
died in that town in June of 1538. His wife's
name was Elizabeth, who had died in Halesworth in
June 1558. They were the parents of at least: Simon, William, Robert, Joan, Jeffrey,
Gelyne, Agnes, Thomas, Elizabeth, and John. |
| |
| SIMON FISKE, the son of Simon and Elizabeth,
was born in Laxfield and though the date of his
marriage and his wife's name are unknown, it is
stated that he died in 1505 and was the father of
Robert, John, George, Nicholas, Jeffrey,
Jeremy, William, Richard, Joan, Gelyne, and
Agnes. |
| |
ROBERT FISKE, son of Simon and Elizabeth, was
born in between 1525 and 1530 in Standhaugh,
Laxfield, Suffolk, England. In 1549, he married
Mrs. Sybil (Gould) Barber and was for some time
in the parish of St. James, South Elmham,
England.
His wife,
Sybil Gould, was in great danger during the time
of the religious persecution (1553-58) as was her
sister Isabelle who had been confined in the
Castle of Norwich, but had escaped death by the
power of her brothers who were men of great
influence in the county.
Robert Fiske
fled from religious persecution in the days of
Queen Mary, to Geneva, but returned later and
died in St. James, Suffolk, England on 01 Jul
1600. His wife Sybil died in Jun 1600. They were
the parents of: William,
Jeffrey, Thomas and Eleazer, the latter had no
issue, but the progeny of the other three sons,
in whole or part, settled in New England. Besides
their sons, they had a daughter Elizabeth who was
married to Robert Bernard and their daughter had
married a Mr. Locke - and was the mother of the
celebrated John Locke, the English Philosopher.

his youngest daughter, Mary Anne who married
Anthony Fisher. William died on 17 May 1623.

second wife Alice, was born in the year 1570 in

Queen Elizabeth's reign in the parish of Syleham,

the family connected to the ancestry of the Morse

many descendants. - This John, the eldest of
William and Anna's children was born at St. James

become a member of Salem Church on 2 July 1641.
Soon after, he removed to Wenham where he was the
first town clerk or clerk of writs. He was
elected representative to the general court of
the commonwealth in 1647 and continued in that
office until 1652. he died quite suddenly in
1654, having served his townsmen in all the
