| Smithton,
which had formerly been called Smith
City, had been laid out by William E.
Coombs and began to grow rapidly after
the Missouri Pacific Railroad came to the
town. During 1900, the Smith
family which remained included: Mary C.
(Gallup) Smith and son Clarence; Samuel
and wife Cornelia (Buck) Smith; the
Albert Pruess family; Roland and Harriet
(Dulaban) Smith family; the Warren,
Norman and Ira Smith families; and widow
Cordelia (Rykert) Terpening and her
daughter Lydia.
