| Married in Benton Co.,
Missouri in 1897, Edward O. Smith and
Hattie Belle (Sutton) remained here until
about 1908 during which time their first
four children (Odes, Olin, Norva &
Glenn) were born. Tired of weeds and flooding,
E.O. most probably ventured alone to
Colorado to locate his homestead and then
returned with his family by train. The
older boys rode in the livestock car with
the lumber and hay while Hattie, her
daughter Norva, and the youngest rode in
the train.
Arriving
at Akron, and unloading their stock of
Percheron and mules from the stock cars,
they loaded up their household goods,
along with the cow, pony, stallion, and
feed machinery and made their final
journey by Conestoga wagon where they
began their new life in the barren
country of eastern Colorado.
