Peters & Susan (Squires), Richard
Gould Peters was born on 02 Jul 1832 in
Delaware Co., NY and remained on the
family farm until he was eighteen. In the
Spring of 1850, he started for
Cincinnati, and from that place came to
Michigan, landing at Point Sable in 1858
and first worked for Charles Mears. From Point Sable
Richard went to Ludington to take charge
of lumbering interests for James
Ludington and in 1866 went to Manistee
and became a member of the lumber firm of
M.S. Tyson &Y Co. The proprietor of
Eastlake, in 1882 he owned two mills, a
salt block, store and boarding home. He
was a member of the firm of Butter,
Peters & Co., whose mill is at
Tallman, and of the firm of Peters &
Butters at Ludington. He was also
president of the Manistee National Bank,
and was interested in a refrigerator
manufactory at Michigan City, Indiana.

Peters was twice married, but had no
children. He first married Miss Evaline
N. Tibbitts on 06 Apr 1858 at Oberlin,
Ohio. Miss Tibbitss had attended Oberlin
College, and although having only
attended one semester there, Richard
donated a large sum of money for the
construction of what would become Peters
Hall. After the death of his wife, he
married Janet Telford in 1898. Richard G.
Peters passed away in Manistee on 01 Apr
1927.
