| Established on 07 April 1831
as Summerfield, Richard Peters served as
the first Postmaster. The name was
changed in 1863 to Petersburgh, and at
the end of 1893 the "h" was
dropped. Five years later in May of 1898,
the post office was robbed and the safe
was blown to pieces. About three dollars
was stolen and nearly $50 in stamps, but
no one was ever apprehended. Other Peters
relations who served as Postmaster were:
Oliver Rose; Dykes McLachlin; William D.
McLachlin; George Peters; John T. Rose;
Horace Brenningstall; James Deal Housman;
and George Bell.
