| Mary's
parents, Charles Shirley and Rebecca (Collier)
were married on 15 November 1795 near the
Kentucky River, what is now called Fayette
County. Shortly after their marriage, Charles
sold the land he inherited from his father
Johannes who had died at Fort Boonesboro in 1784.
Charles
and Rebecca removed from Richmond, Kentucky in
Madison County, to what later became Clark
County, Indiana. (This county was taken from Knox
County in 1801 and was an original part of George
Roger Clark's Tract.) They were the parents of
twelve children, Mary being their second eldest.
Mary's
maternal grandparents were John Collier and
Millie (Vaughn), who were married in South
Carolina. John Collier had but one leg as he was
bitten by a dog and had to have it amputated. He
was considered a man of wealth in those days, but
surgery and medical aid being very rare and
expensive, his means were greatly reduced. He is
buried near Charlestown in a church yard at Muddy
Creek, as is his wife Millie (Vaughn) Collier.
Mary
Shirley was born 08 November at Boonesboro
County, Kentucky and married David Wise Daily on
30 Aug 1818 in Charlestown, Indiana and were the
parents of eleven children. David died there in
1878, and Mary in 1897 at ate 98, four months and
fifteen days.
