Clarissa Ann Work,
the daughter of Samuel & Elizabeth
Henley-Work, who was born about 1824, married
James C. Crawford on 04 February 1841. She
was located with her husband in the 1850, 1860
and 1870 Clark County Federal census
records. Listed as a 38 year-old farmer in
Charlestown in 1850, James Crawford is head of
the household which includes his wife Clarissa
age 25, daughter Sarah age 8, and daughter Louisa
age six. Living in Charlestown in 1860 ,
James Crawford was listed as a 43 year-old farmer
born in IN, his wife Clarissa (Work) listed as
age 38, daughter Louisa age 10, Isabella age 9,
and Alice age six. In 1870 the family was still living
in Charlestown, James C. Crawford a 52 year-old
farmer, his wife Clarissa age 46, daughter Lucy
20, Isabelle 17, and Alice fifteen.
A search of the
census records found other Crawfords, but could
not place James with his parents. These
Crawford which were located were: William
Crawford born about 1775 in PA, and was living in
Owen Twp in 1860 with what appears to be his
daughter Jane who was born in PA in about 1810;
James F. Crawford who was born in VA in about
1820 and was living in Charlestown in 1860 with
wife Sarah and children Mary, Elizabeth, James,
Emovetta, Thomas F., and Martha; and James M.
Crawford who was born in KY in about 1836 and was
a Methodist Minister living in Washington Twp in
1860 with his 25 year-old wife Clarissa and their
three month-old son Edward.
History of the Ohio Falls
Counties states:
"James Crawford came to Clark county, with
his father, from the State of Virginia, in the
spring of 1830. Mr. Crawford, by industry and
economy, is now the owner of a good farm. He is a
cousin of the Rev. Josiah Crawford."
