Henry Chrisler (1845-1920)
Photo contributed by Robert Burnham (2012)

Henry Chrisler/Christler
Son of Henry N. Chrisler & Mary
The 1850 census lists a James Chrisler, age 12 in the Glenville household of Henry N. and Mary Chrisler in Schenectady County, New York - which may be the same James whose photograph appears in the photo album index owned by Robert Burnham. The same family is enumerated as Christler in 1860 listing James P., age 21; and may be the same listed as James P. Chrysler in the 1890 "Special Schedule: Surviving Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines, and Widows, etc." which indicates he was a corporal in NY Regiment 2 Co., E and enlisted 05 Jul 1863 and served one year, 2 months, and 19 days, having been discharged Surgeon's Certificate on 24 Sep 1864. It is believed this James lived sometime after 1910.

In addition to the above, another James Chrisler was located in the 1850 and 1860 census records residing next to Sylvester Chrisler (father of Henry who married Sarah Knowlton) in Schenectady. This James was born in New York in about 1814, and appears to be the son of John Chrisler who was born in New York in about was enumerated with wife Elizabeth, son John who was a painter, and daughters Mary and Lucy E. Chrisler. In 1870 the same family was living next door to Sylvester in Rotterdam. He is most probably the son of John, who was born (according to the 1850 census) in about 1785 which might suggest that this particular James is too old to be the one photographed.

*Speculated to be the same James, born about 1838 and son of Henry and Mary as noted above. Listed as No. 26 in the Knowlton family album owned by Robert Burnham.
