The son of Robert Bennett Jones and Cynthia Adeline (Reece), John W. Jones was born in Marshall Co., Alabama on 02 Mar 1827. Prior to 1850 he was married to Mary Martha (Rather), the daughter of William Baker Rather and Mary "Lucinda"(Menefee). John and Mary were the parents of William R., who was born 01 Jun 1850 in Tuscumbia; Charles, born about 1853; Paul, born about 1855, Edwin T., Bessie, and Samuel Elliot, who was born in Decatur, Morgan Co., AL on 30 Dec 1857 and was the husband of Mabel Grace (Moore), the daughter of Thomas A. Moore & Clarissa V. (Pilcher) who resided in St. Louis, Missouri.

After the death of Mary in 1865, John W. was left with seven children. On 14 Oct 1869 he married Zelia (Wise) who was the widow of Duke Hartsfield of Tennessee. The couple were married in Morgan Co., AL on 14 Oct 1869 and became the parents of Mattie M.; Nettie O., wife of William W. Callahan; and Frank B. Jones.

Among his occupations, John W. was a farmer, printer, merchant, and superintendent of the Huntsville and Decatur railroad, on on the line's completion became its agent at Decatur. He served as 2nd Lieutenant and Capt. of Co. D., 7th Alabama regiment, C.S. Army and was a respresentative in the constitutional convention of 1875, as well as may or Decator for three terms. He died on 26 Dec 1884 at the age of fifty-seven years, nine months and twenty-four days.

Note: Mary Lucinda appears to have been known as Lucinda. Her surname also spelled Menifee and Manefee.

The 2nd wife of John W. Jones, Zelia (Wise) was born in Alabama on 25 Oct 1843. They were the parents of at least: Mattie M., Nettie O., and Frank B. Jones. She died at the age of sixty-five years, six months and nine days

Nettie (Jones) Callahan 1874-1944
NETTIE (JONES) CALLAHAN
1874- 1944
The daughter of John W. Jones and Zelia (Wise). She married to Judge William Washington Callahan who presided over the very public and bias trial often referred to as "Scottsboro: A tragedy of the American South" in which he exercised great prejudice. They were the parents of Dorothy, wife of Charles Russell Green and mother of twins Evelyn and Eleanor, Charles and Marth Green; son Travis who served in WWI; and son Frank.

According to her headstone, Nettie passed in 1944 and William died on 06 Aug 1947 in Montgomery, Alabama.
