| Located on
Pleasant Street in the City of
Charlestown, the cemetery remains
well-maintained and is the final resting
place of many of the early pioneers,
including Daily descendants and the first
governor of Indiana, Jonathan Jennings. |

MARY A. (SHIRLEY)
DAILY
1798 - 1897* |
| The matriarch of
the family, Mary was the daughter of
Charles Shirley and Rebecca (Collier),
she was born in Clark Co., Kentucky and
thereby had met many of the notable men
of that area including Governor Jennings,
Daniel Boone, Lafayette, Charles Beggs,
and Charles Nailor who had laid out
Charlestown and for whom it was named.
She had been an inmate of Boone's fort
when it was besieged by the Indians in
1806. She married David
Wise Daily on 30 Aug 1818 and they were
the parents of eleven children, seven of
which preceded her. Known to so many in
Charlestown and referred to as Grandma
Daily, and enjoyed sharing her stories of
the pioneer days with the community.
Widowed in 1878, Mary lived to be
ninety-eight years, four months and
fifteen days. She died in Charlestown on
23 Mar 1897 leaving but four children and
a number of grandchildren and great
grandchildren to mourn her.
Headstone
is in error. Her obituary,
appearing in the Charlestown Evening
Newspaper was dated 05 Apr 1897. It's
headline reading "Death Of One of
Charlestown's Almost Centenarian." [Photo]

burial place of her husband, David Wise
Daily (1798-1878) has not yet been

REBECCA (DAILY)
COOMBS
1820 - 1908 |
| Born in
Charlestown on 23 Nov 1820, Rebecca was
the daughter of David W. Daily and Mary
A. (Shirely). She married Felix Coombs on
April 15, 1840 in Clark County, Indiana.
They were the parents of Arabel, Mary A.,
Rebecca, Dallas, Felix, Loretta or
Lovetta, and India K. Coombs. Rebecca
died on the 18th of August 1908. It is
believed that her husband Felix died
sometime prior to 1880.

CAPT. SETH S. DAILY
1839 - 1888 |
| Born in
Charlestown on the March 9th, Seth was
the son of David W. Daily and Mary A.
(Shirely). He served as a captian in the
Union Army during the Civil War,
enlisting on 10 Jan 1862. The Officer's
Casualty Sheet from the State of Indiana
indicates Seth was dishonorably
discharged from the service for
"resignation in disapproving the
policy of arming negroes." He was
described as five foot eleven inches,
fair complexion, light hair and light
eyes and his occupation was that of a
farmer. He married Barbara
Stierheim on 06 Sep 1864 and they were
the parents of David W., Frank, Shirley,
Charles E., Jessie F., and a little child
who died unexpectedly in 1873. His wife
Barbara died in 1875, and it appears Seth
then married Catherine L. Bell in
Charlestown on 03 Apr 1883. Seth died in
Chico, Butte Co., California, but was
laid to rest in the Charlestown Cemetery.

BARBARA E.
"BARBIE" (STIERHEIM)
1842 - 1875 |
| Barbara was born
04 Sep 1842 in Charlestown, Clark Co.,
Indiana. She was the daughter of Francis
J. Stierheim who was born in Strasbourg,
France in 1812 and his wife Sarah (Neely)
who was born in Indiana in 1819. She
married Seth Daily, son of David Wise
Daily and Mary A. (Shirley) on 06 Oct
1864 in Clark Co., Indiana and were the
parents of David W., Frank, Shirley,
Charles E., Jessie and a young child who
died in 1873. On 09 Mar
1875 Barbara died of pneumonia and Seth
relinquished his children into the
gaurdianship of his father, going then to
California. In 1880 the boys were
residing with their grandparents in
Charlestown, and the girls were with
their aunt, Indiana Ricketts in
Indianapolis, Indiana.

| Son of Seth and

was born in 1866 and died on 24 May 1929.
The maiden name of his wife is not known,
however census records of 1920 and 1930
indicate she may have been born about
1870 in Indiana to parents of Indiana

FRANK S. DAILY
1868-1909 |
| The son of Seth
and Barbara (Stierheim) Daily, Frank was
born in 1868. In 1880 he was listed in
the household of his grandmother, Mary
(Shirley) Daily while his father Seth was
residing in San Diego, California. In
1900, he was then listed with his Aunt
Lizzie James and was working as a
plumber. Frank died on 03 January 1909. -

ELIZABETH
"LIZZIE" (DAILY) JAMES
1837 - 1925 |
| Born in
Charlestown on 17 Jun 1837, Lizzie was
the youngest daughter of David W. Daily
and Mary A. (Shirley). She married
William James, son of Beverly W. James
and Matilda (Day) on 13 Mar 1872. She was
the mother of James Beverly James, born
13 Aug 1875. Lizzie
died on 14 Mar 1925 at the age of
eighty-seven years, nine months and
twenty-eight days. Her obituary notes
that she was the widow of the former
Circuit Clerk, and daughter of the
"first white male child born in

| James B. James was
born on August 13th in Charlestown, and
was the son of William & Elizabeth
(Daily), and grandson of David W. Daily
and Mary A. (Shirley). He passed away in
Charlestown on the 28th of March. His wife,
Theodocia, was the daughter of another
Clark County pioneer, Samuel Prather
Lewman, and his wife Ann Eliza (Holman).
She was born on the 20th of May and
passed away in Charlestown on May 30,

DAVID LEWMAN JAMES
1901 - 1967 |
| David Lewman James
was the son of James B. James and
Theodocia Burr (Lewman) also of Clark
County, Indiana. Born in in Charlestown
on the 14th of August, David assisted his
father at the James Funeral Home which
was located at 1807 Thompson Street and
established in the early 1920s. He
married Anna (Farmer) and later owned a
garage in Charlestown. A historian buff
and father of David, James, and Judith,
he passed away in Jeffersonville on 08

THOMAS HART DAILY
1841-1881 |
| Thomas H. Daily
was born December 4, 1841, in the town of
Charlestown, Clark Co., Ind., and was a
son of David W. and Mary A. (Shirley)
Daily. He enlisted during the Civil War
in Company D, Twenty-second Indiana
Infantry, with which he served gallantly
for a period of three years. Upon
quitting the army, he became passenger
conductor on the J., M. & I. Railroad
and ran a train for twelve years. On
September 27, 1868, he married Miss
Maggie Walsh, daughter of John Walsh,
Esq. They were the parents of :
Katherine, Helen, and Maria and were
devoted members of the Catholic Church.
Thomas
was laid to rest by the side of his
daughter Maria who was born on the 25th
of November in 1873, and died on the 28th
of February 1880. [Obituary]

MARY INDIA DAILY
1873 - 1880 |
Believed to be the
daughter of Thomas Hart Daily and
Margaret (Walsh), Mary was believed to be
born on 25 Nov 1873 and died as a young
girl. Headstone appears to indicate the
age of six years, 3 months and 3 days,
but the date of death in family papers
indicate she died on 28 Feb 1880 at the
age of seven years and three days.
