| Born in Suffolk,
Nansemond Co., Virginia on the 5th of June, he
came to St. Louis in about 1804. He married Eliza
Carr, daughter of Charles Carr, in Lexington,
Kentucky on 08 Aug 1812. In 1816, he and Joshua Pilcher
opened a downtown auction house. Pilcher, who had
apprenticed under his brother-in-law, Hiram Shaw
as a hatter in Lexington, was a fellow Virginian
as well as a Mason. He was then becoming familiar
with the fur trade and the wealthy French
investors and the bank gave the bank Riddick,
Benton and Pilcher incorporated served the needs
of the rich investors. Both would becoming very
influential in the business and politics of
Missouri and its fur trade.
Thomas removed
from St. Louis in 1827 to Jefferson Co.,
Missouri. He died at Sulphur Springs, on the 15th
of January at the age of 48 years, 7 months and
ten days. He was survived by his widow Eliza, two
sons Walter and Dabney, and two daughters,
Virginia and Frances.
