Located inside the Army Ammunition Plant near Charlestown, Baird Cemetery is enclosed by a stone wall. Seen here, in a 2009 video taped by Mike Hensley, the cemetery remains in fairly good condition and is situated on land once owned by Philip Daily who emigrated to Clark Co., Indiana in 1796. He and some of his family are laid to rest here.
 
 
 
 
 
Philip Daily, Sr. (1762) - 1830
PHILIP DAILY, SR.
(1762) - 1830
The son of Charles Daily and his wife Eleanor "Nellie" (Temple), Philip was born in Pittsburgh in about 1762. After his father's death, he removed with his mother and other Pennsylvania families to the fort at Louisville (Beargrass). During the Revolutionary War he served in Lt. Horatio Claggett's 3rd Company of MD, a regiment commanded by Colonel Nathan Ramsey. His name appears on the roll date February 1778.

He married Mary (Wise), the daughter of Valentine and Katie (Franz) on 02 Feb 1786 in Bullitt Co., Kentucky and in 1796 removed to Clark Co., Indiana. He and Mary were the parents of Eleanor, wife of Hezekiah Applegate; Elizabeth, wife of Daniel Field; Jacob; Mary Katherine "Kitty" whose first husband Joseph Mallot was murdered by a man named Irwin and later married Samuel Carr; Charles; David Wise; Mary W., wife of Edmund David Huckleberry; Eli; and Charlotte Temple, wife of James A. Boyer.

Headstone Inscription: "SACRED to the memory of Philip Daily, Sen. who departed this life March 14, 1830 in the 69th year of his age. Lamented as an affectionate parent and exemplary Christian he lives beyond the tomb."

 
 
Mary (Wise), wife of Philip Daily 1769-1845
MARY ANN (WISE) DAILY
1769 - 1845
The daughter of Valentine Wise and Katie (Franz) of Washington Co., Maryland, Mary was born in Kentucky in about 1769. She married Philip Daily on 02 Feb 1786 and were the parents of ten children: Kittie; Eleanor; Jacob; Elizabeth; Charles; David W.; Philip; Mary W.; Eli; and Charlotte Daily. She died on 26 Mar 1845.

Inscription: "Born in Fredricksburg Maryland; Married in Bullitt Co., Kentucky and died in the 77 year of her age The good die first."

David W. Daily (1825-1847)
DAVID W. DAILY

According to his age at death, David W. Daily was born on 10 Apr 1825. His birth occurred in Clark Co., Indiana and he was the son of Jacob Daily and his 2nd wife, Isabelle (Barker) who were married in 1818. His siblings were: Elizabeth, wife of Stephen Stratton and later Charles Mahan; Angeline, who died in her childhood in 1827; and a brother John who is believed to have died in about 1850 or 1851.

Inscription: "David W. Daily Died Oct 14 1847, Aged: 22 yrs, 6 mos. 4 days."

 
 
 
 
David Wise Daily (1827-1868)
DAVID WISE DAILY
1827 - 1868
David W. Daily was born 21 Jan 1827 in Charlestown, Clark Co., IN. He served during the Mexican War and was mustered in 22 Jun 1846, at New Albany, Indiana by Colonel Samuel Churchill. He was mustered out 27 Jun 1847, at New Orleans by Colonel Samuel Churchill and almost exactly four years later he married Mary Ann Parker. His bride was the daughter of John C. and Nancy Parker and their wedding took place in Charlestown on 26 Jun 1851. They were the parents of four children: Fanny, who married actor William Goodall; Harry; Mollie, wife of Richard McGill; and John C. Daily.

During the Civil War, David was captain of Company D of the 22nd, and was mustered out at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. After only seventeen years of marriage, David passed away. He departed this life on 02 Nov 1868 at the age of forty-one.

His widow, Mary Ann, survived him many years and she later moved to California where she was living with her son, Harry, and at the time of her demise was undergoing a surgical operation. She died in San Jose, Santa Clara co., California on 05 May 1897.

Inscription: "Son of D.W. & M.A. Daily, Born January 21, 1827, Died November 02, 1868, He was Lieut Col. of the Union Army, "Though lost to sight to memory dear."
