GEORGE PETERS
1822-1912 |
| Born in Harpersfield,
Delaware Co., New York on 21 Sep 1822,
George was the eldest son of Richard and
Mary "Polly" (Wilcox) and came
with his parents to the spot where
Petersburg now stands and resided for
many years on a part of the old homestead
farm. He was repeatedly honored with
offices, indicating the esteem in which
he was held - serving as the town as
school inspector and nineteen years as
supervisor. He was a member of the House
of Representatives in 1861 and 1862, and
a member of the State Senate in 1867 and
1868. He married Mary J. Holmes,
daughter of Benjamin S. Holmes and
Minerva (Howe) on 10 Jun 1845 in
Summerfield Twp., Monroe Co., Michigan.
They were the parents of four children,
two reaching adulthood: Mary Helen, born
01 May 1849 and died 06 Feb 1850; an
infant born 25 Dec 1850, died January,
1851; Helen Frances who was born 14 Nov
1851 and was the wife of William C. Rea
and resident of Hamburg, NY; and Richard
George who was born 19 Jun 1865 and
married Frances Amelia (Trombly) and died
at Wampler's Lake, Jackson Co., Michigan.
Note:
Peters' monument marks the burial of
George Peters and his wife Mary J.
(Holmes). Two additional footstones
inscribed "Mother" and
"Father" set at left and right
of the monument.

| Charles was born in
Summerfield Twp., Monroe Co., Michigan on
14 Mar 1826 and was the son of Richard
Peters and Mary "Polly"
(Wilcox). He was married to Julia Ann
(Burnham), the daughter of Calvin and
Mary Ann (Bruce) on 15 Nov 1848 and were
the parents of seven children: Herbert
Dwight, born 01 Nov 1849 who married Anna
(Huston) and lived in Piatt Co., IL;
Edmund Eugene, born 18 Dec 1851 and
husband of Julia Ann (Weatherwax); Mary
F. who was born 02 May 1857 and died at
age 11 months and 12 days on 14 Apr 1858;
John a. Peters who was born 26 Dec 1858
and died 14 Jan 1860 at age 1 year and 18
days; Richard Calvin, born 29 apr 1862,
husband of Margaret Reed and resident of
Houston, Harris Co., Texas; Dora, born
about 1868 (adopted); and Charles B. who
was born 22 Aug 1873 and died at the age
of 8 months and 7 days on 29 Apr 1874. Charles died on 06
May 1893. Julia, who was born in
Montague, Franklin Co., Massachusetts,
died in Petersburg on 03 Jan 1901.
