The land on
which Greenridge Cemetery is situated was
purchased in 1843 from Mary Avery
(1780-1859), the widow of a Revolutionary
soldier. The original cemetery was laid out
by Abel Kellogg and surveyed by Joseph Briggs
and Jonathan Hammond, the first sexton, and
contained eleven acres. It is located on
Lincoln avenue, opposite Regent street, a
short distance from Broadway.
It should be
noted that the headstones of the early
pioneers whose dates precede the existence of
the cemetery, had been removed to Greenridge
from other cemeteries such as Sadler and
Putnam.

SAMUEL
PETERS, MARY (SHEPHERD) & SAMUEL
ALTHOUSE

| Samuel Peters, the son of
Richard Peters andJerusha (Sutton), was
born in New York in 1769. He was
enumerated in the early census records of
1790-1820 residing in Halfmoon. A farmer
and Methodist, he wrote his Will on 14
Mar 1826 listing his wife Mary, sons
Isaac L. Peters, Thomas M. Peters, his
daughter Jerusha and her 2nd husband
David Barclay, grandchildren Samuel and
Jane Ladow (children by Jerusha's first
husband Thomas Ladow), son-in-law Elias
Vussler, daughter Parmelia (wife of
Martin Wilbur), and son-in-law Abraham
Morse. He appointed his wife, Issac Hicks
and William Arnold executors. He died
this year, date unknown. Samuel was married
to Mary (Shepherd) sometime before 1790
when their daughter Jerusha was born. She
was the daughter of Daniel and Ruth, and
in 1850 was residing in
the household of her son Thomas. She and
Samuel were the parents of Jerusha,
Isaac, Betsy, Parmelia, Thomas, and
Margaret Peters. She died in 1852.
Samuel
Althouse, who also appears on this
headstone, was married to Julia Ann
(Haight), the widow of Samuel and Mary's
son Thomas M. Peters who died in 1852.
Their marriage took place sometime before
1860 when they were
enumerated in the census residing in
Clifton Park. In 1870 and 1880 they were
residing in Saratoga Springs. Widowed in
1890, he was enumerated in the 1892 state
census as aged 75 and his occupation as
"Feed Store."
Samuel
died five years later in 1897. Whether he
was of some other relation to the Peters
and therefore included on this headstone,
is not known. It is also unclear if this
Samuel is the same who was listed in the 1850 household with
Peter Althouse, Amanda (apparent wife of
Peter), and Fanny (Arnold). If so, it is
possible he was the son of Peter Althouse
and Nelly (Williams).
Note: The
William J. Burke & Sons Funeral Home
Records indicate Julia died 12 Jul 1890
at the age of 80 years and 5 mos.

| THOMAS M.
PETERS, JULIA A. (HAIGHT), HARRIET PETERS
& SAMUEL PETERS |
The
son of Samuel Peters and Mary (Shepherd),
Thomas was born in Clifton Park, Saratoga
Co., New York on 13 Jan 1813. He married
Julia Ann (Haight), the daughter of Elias
who was a native of Columbia county and
had come to Saratoga county in about
1828. Their first child, Thomas D. was
born about 1836, followed by another son,
Elias Haight Peters in 1841. The 1850 and 1860 census
also includes their daughter Margaret who
was born about 1844.
According to "A History
of Richard Peters of Halfmoon, Now
Clifton Park, NY & His Descendants
Vol. I, II, III" by Leone Peters
Kleinheinz, Thomas either died on 19 May
1852 or 21 Oct 1852. His widow Julia
married Samuel Althouse sometime
thereafter and is enumerated with him in
the 1860 census along with
her children Elias and Margaret. She died
on 25 Sep 1890, and Samuel Althouse in
1897 - his death inscribed upon the
headstone of Samuel and Mary (Shepherd)
Peters.

| ELIAS H.
PETERS, ABBA J. (CARPENTER) &
CLARENCE C. PETERS |
The
son of Thomas M. Peters and Julia Ann
(Haight), Elias Haight Peters was born 22
Nov 1841 and named after his maternal
grandfather. He was raised at the Old
Peters Homestead in Clifton Park and
after attending his studies, at the age
of 18 he entered the law office of J.A.
Schondy of Saratoga Springs and was
admitted to the bar in 1863. In 1877 he
became a Surrogate of Saratoga county, a
position he held for many years.
On 12 Dec 1868, he was
united in marriage to Abba Jane
Carpenter, daughter of John Allen
Carpenter and his wife Jane (Bingham).
The 1870 census shows the
couple residing in Saratoga Springs with
Clarence as an un-named male born in Feb,
aged three months. At this time Elias is
listed as the Village Trustee. In 1880 their household
consisted of daughters Julia and Jennie,
Abba's mother Jane Carpenter and servant
Jane of Ireland; and Elias was then
listed as a Surrogate.
Abby died in 1898 and in 1900 and 1905 Elias was
listed in the household of his son-in-law
William Martin who was an undertaker.
Elias died on 30 Jan 1909.
Note: Elias was enumerated
as "Alias" in the 1870 census.
Their son Clarence was named after Abba's
younger brother.
