Township in the town of South Kortright,
Delaware Co., New York the cemetery is
situated in the old churchyard of the Presbyterian
Church which was
established in 1790 and includes many of
the early Bovina families. |

JAMES RICH
1791-1857 |
| Patriarch of the family,
James Rich was born in New York on 23 Oct
1791. The son of James and Mary (Altgelt), he was first
married on 18 Dec 1816 to Helena, the
daughter of Dr. Henry Marshall of
Scotland. By her he had eight known
children: Henry Marshall, Mary, Robert
Sterling, Stephen, Thomas, Alexander,
Helena Jane and Ann Eliza Rich . After her death on
27 Dec 1835 at the age of 43 years, two
months and 14 days, James married Jane
Ann Southard on 07 Dec 1836 and in 1850 the family was
residing in Stamford, Harpersfield Twp.,
Delaware Co., New York. He and his second
wife had three known children: Hannah,
wife of William Blakely Peters; John; and
Isabella who married James M. Stevenson.
James was
an old-time whig, and an elder and
trustee in the United Presbyterian church
in South Kortright. He died in Stamford
on 10 Jul 1857; Jane died on 06 Sep 1876
in Bovina.

HELENA
(MARSHALL)
1792-1835 |
| First wife of James Rich,
Helena was born in New York City on 13
Oct 1792 and was the daughter of Dr.
Henry Marshall. She was united in
marriage with James on 18 Dec 1816. They
were the parents of Henry Marshall; Mary;
Robert Sterling who married Caroline
Blish; Stephen Rich who married Sarah
Rich (daughter of Stephen and Jane);
Thomas who died in Mexico in 1852;
Alexander; Helena Jane, wife of Hector
Cowan; and her twin Ann Eliza. Helena passed away
in Delaware County, New York on 27 Dec
1835 nineteen years after her marriage to
James. She was aged forty-three years,
two months and fourteen days at the time
of her death on 27 Dec 1835. A year after
her death, her husband married Jane Ann
(Southard) and had by her three more
children.
Note:
Believe Helena may have been the sister
of Robert Sterling Marshall who married Frances Maria
(Keeler).
Inscription:
In Memory of HELENA, wife of James Rich,
who departed this life Dec 27 1835, aged
43 years, 2 mos & 11 days.

JANE
ANN (SOUTHARD)
1800-1876 |
| Second wife of James Rich,
Jane Ann was born in Dutchess Co., New
York on 15 Dec 1800. She was united in
marriage with James on 07 Dec 1836 and in
1850 the family was
residing in Stamford, Harpersfield Twp.,
Delaware Co., New York. He and his second
wife had three known children: Hannah,
wife of William Blakely Peters; John; and
Isabella who married James M. Stevenson. After her husband's
death in 1857, Jane Ann was listed in the
Hobart household of her stepson Henry M.
Rich in 1860, and in 1870 census appears to
be listed incorrectly as Jane Peters in
the household of her daughter Hannah.
Jane died on 06 Sep 1876.

| JAMES A. RICH
& WIFE, ROXIE (BUNNELL) |
| Uncertain of his parentage,
James may have been the eldest child of
James Rich and his first wife Helena
(Marshall) as he was born in New York on
17 Oct 1817, about 11 months after the
couple had married. At the age of about
twenty-eight, James married Roxy Bunnell
who was born in New York in about 1822,
and is believed to be the daughter of
Virgil Bunnell and Frances (Blish). James
and Roxy were the parents of: Mary, born
about 1846; Frances born 21 Jun 1848 in
Andes, Delaware Co., NY (wife of John
Mitchell); Thomas B. who was born
about 1853; George B. born about 1855;
James born 09 Jun 1858 who married Lizzie
Rice; as well as one son Virgil B. who
was born on 05 Apr 1851 and died on 05
Aug 1853 in his second year of life.
James and
Roxy were enumerated in the 1850, 1860, 1870. and 1880 census records
residing in Stamford Twp., New York.
James died on 04 Mar 1894. Roxy's
whereabouts after her husband's death is
not yet known. She died 05 Jan 1910.

FRANCES
"FANNIE" RICH
1848 - 1877 |
| Daughter of James A. Rich
and Roxy (Bunnell), Fannie was born 21
Jun 1848 in Andes, Delaware Co., New
York. She married John Mitchell, son of William
Mitchell and Catharine (Grant) on 24 Jun
1874 at the age of twenty-six. Sadly, Fannie
passed away less than three years later
on 04 Mar 1877 at the age of twenty-eight
years, eight months and eleven days. She
is laid beside her husband - the two
sharing inscriptions on one large family
monument.

& WIFE, LIZZIE (RICE) |
| Son of James A. Rich and
Roxy (Bunnell), James was born 09 Jun
1858 in South Kortright, Delaware Co.,
New York. He married Lizzie (Rice) who
was born in October of 1870 on 30 Dec
1891. They were the parents of James
Arthur; Robert Stevenson; Elsie Bell and
Alice E. Rich. James died on 21 Apr 1937 of
coronary thrombosis and his funeral was
held at the United Presbyterian Church.
Lizzie died in 1946.

HENRY
MARSHALL RICH
1819-1894 |
| The son of James Rich and
his first wife Helena (Marshall), Henry
was born in New York on 12 Sep 1819. He
was sixteen years at the time of his
mother's death in 1835, and thirty-seven
when his father passed. In 1860 he was listed as
head of the household which included his
stepmother Jane, sister Ann and half
brother John and half sisters Hannah and
Isabella. In 1870 and 1880 Henry was
residing with his brother Stephen in
Stamford Twp. He died on 24 Aug 1894 at
the age of seventy-four years, eleven
months and twelve days.
Inscription:
Henry M. Rich died Aug 24, 1894 aged 75
yrs.

MARY RICH
1821-1842 |
| The eldest daughter of James
Rich and his first wife Helena
(Marshall), Mary was born in Delaware
Co., New York on 17 Feb 1821. She died
unmarried on 03 Apr 1842 at the age of
twenty-one years. |

STEPHEN RICH
1824 - 1884
"So he giveth His
beloved sleep." |
| Son of James Rich and his
first wife Helena (Marshall), Stephen was
born 08 Oct 1824 in Stamford Twp. and was
raised by his grandmother Mary. After
attending the district school, he went to
New York City at the age of eighteen and
began working with James Buchan & Co.
manufacturing soap and candles. In 1850 at the age of 25,
he was residing in the house of his
future wife and in-laws in New York City. He continued to
reside in his Uncle Stephen Rich's
household where he was enumerated in 1860, and a year after
the death of his aunt Jane (Oliver) in
1868, he and his cousin Sarah were
married. They returned to Delaware County
and bought the old homestead on which
they lived the remainder of their lives.
A
Republican and "thoroughly good
citizen," Stephen was enumerated
with his wife in Stamford Twp. in 1870 and 1880. He died on 06 Jul
1884, and his widow on 29 Dec 1906.
Note:
Sarah Rich was daughter of his father's
brother Stephen A. Rich and wife Jane
(Oliver).

ANN ELIZA
RICH
1832 - 1889 |
| Born on 24 Feb 1832, Ann
Eliza was the twin of Helena, daughters
of James Rich and his first wife Helena
(Marshall). She was residing with her
father and his second wife Jane
(Southard) along with her siblings in
Stamford in 1850 and was then
listed as aged eighteen. Her father died in
1857 and she continued to reside with her
step-mother in 1860, but by 1870 she
was living in New York City with what
appears to be an Elizabeth Shields, age
74 and looks to have been employed as
sewing machine operator. In 1880 Ann is
listed in the Bloomingdale Asylum as age
forty-nine. She died on 07 Oct 1889 at
the age of fifty-seven years, seven
months and thirteen days.

JANE RICH
1821 - 1907 |
| The daughter of Stephen
Altgelt Rich and Jane (Oliver), Jane was
enumerated with her family in New York
City in 1850 and after her
father's death in 1858, she was residing
in the household of her widowed mother
when the 1860 census was taken in
that city. Jane never married and in 1870 resided with her
sister Mary Struthers in New York City on
28th St. between Madison and 4th Avenue,
but when Mary moved to Jersey City in Hudson Co., New
Jersey Jane remained in New York and was
located in the 1880 Manhattan
household of her sister Elizabeth
Rintoul, wife of James who was a railroad
auditor. In 1900, the last census
in which she was enumerated, Jane had
returned to Delaware Co., New York and
was living with her sister Mary, widow of
Stephen Rich.
Jane died
on 29 Nov 1907 at the age of eighty-six
years, nine months, and seven days. A photograph of her as well as
her mother Jane and sister Mary Struthers, can be seen in
the on-line album of her cousin Hannah
(Rich), wife of William B. Peters.

SARAH RICH
1827 - 1906 |
| The daughter of Stephen
Altgelt Rich and Jane (Oliver), Sarah
married her cousin Stephen Rich on 06 May
1869. She was a member of the United
Presbyterian church in Kortright, in
which her husband held the birthright
office of Elder. They were enumerated in New
York City in 1850 and 1860 residing with her
family, but had returned to Delaware
County and resided on the old family
homestead where they were enumerated in 1870 and 1880. After the death
of her husband in 1884, Sarah continued
to run the old homestead with the aid of
her brother-in-law, Henry Rich until his
death in 1894. She was then listed as
head of household in 1900, at which time her
sister Jane and niece Agnes Struthers
resided with her. Sarah died on 29 Dec
1906 at the age of seventy-eight.
