Burnham - From Montague, Massachusetts to Monroe Co., Michigan
Compiled by P. Davidson-Peters © 1999

This Burnham family is relative to the Peters in that Calvin Burnham had two daughters who married into the Peters family in Monroe Co., Michigan. This family is believed to have descended from Robert Burnham and Mary (Andrews) of England who came to America and resided in Hartford Connecticut where their son Thomas Jr. was born in 1646. This family removed to Massachusetts where son Josiah's children were born including Daniel who was born in Montague in 1745.

MOSES BURNHAM, the son of Daniel and Jemima (Perkins) was born on 04 Jan 1767 in Montague, Franklin Co., Massachusetts and was the eldest child of eleven children. He married Abigail Bacon who was born in Montague in about 1771 and died in August of 1838 in Deerfield, Lenawee Co., Michigan. Moses died prior to this on 16 Dec 1821 in Montague, Franklin Co., MA.

GENERATION III

LOVINA BURNHAM, the daughter of Moses and Abigail, married James Potter in Montague on 21 Sep 1807. He was born about 1785 and appears to have died before 1821 at which time a Mrs. Lovina Potter was married to Ebeneazer Whitey in Montague, Massachusetts on 21 Feb 1821. She appears to be listed with Ebeneazer in the 1850 census residing in Montague. His age in this census is listed as 89 and born in Connecticut, and a check into the birth and christening records for that area lists an Ebenezer born to Zachriah and Sarah (Stanton) on 28 May 1762 in Mansfield, Tolland Co., Connecticut.

Ebenezer was united with his first wife, Rachel Perne Rawson, on 18 Dec 1786. Records indicate she was born in Mendon, Worcester Co., MA on 03 Apr 1764 and died in Montague on 15 Nov 1819. Six known children were born to this union: Isaac, Otis, Apollos, Emery, Sophia, and Asa who was listed in the census with his father and step mother in 1850.

In 1860 Lovina is listed in the household of her son Joseph Whitney. In this census he is listed as head of household and is a 36 year-old laborer. The household includes Mary age 32; Allen age 14; Alvin age 9, and Lovina age 72 - all of whom list their place of birth as Massachusetts. This would be the last federal census in which Lovina appears as she died on 30 Nov 1866.

In 1870 Joseph and his wife Mary (speculated to be Mary Hunt whom he married in Franklin Co., MA on 17 Jun 1845) along with their son Alvin E., are still residing in Montague, though Joseph and son are both listed as tailors. In 1880 Joseph and Mary appear with his mother-in-law, Gratia Hunt who is aged 79 although they are now living in the town of Erving. Living nearby is son Alvin E., age 27, wife Flora age 27, and son Ernest age 6 - his occupation is listed as "works with bit and braces."

SEVIAH BURNHAM, the daughter of Moses and Abigail, married Horace Field who was the son of Rev. Solomon Field & Mary (Wright). He was born in Conway, Franklin Co., Massachusetts and married Seviah on 13 Dec 1808. He died of consumption on 11 Oct 1831. It appears from the 1850 census of Conway, that Seviah married Lucius Wilcox. A marriage record for that town indicates they were married on 08 Jan 1836. His age in the census is 70 while Seviah's looks to be 60 or 62. Listed in their household is Seviah's son Moses, son of her husband Horace Field. He is listed as age 28 with wife Lucinda (Edson), whom he had married in Conway on 16 Mar 1848. Their son Elwin is listed as eight months old and according to records was born 05 Nov 1849.

Seviah Wilcox is listed in her son Moses household in 1860 as age 72. The household also includes Mose's wife Lucinda, son Elwin, and daughter Lottie who is age five. This would be the last federal census in which Seviah would appear. She died in Conway on 28 Aug 1862.
