The Arbuckles of Carmunnock, Lanark, Scotland
Compiled by P. Davidson-Peters ©2001-2007

Outer Background is the Arbuckle Tartan - Provided by Kenneth Arbuckle

Of the Clan Macnab, the Arbuckle name is said to have derived from one who is a maker of brass bucklers - these being a small round shield which was part of the armour worn by warriors in the Middle ages and which buckled on the arms.

By the year 1511, land had been purchased by a John Arbuckle in Glasgow and there was a place in Lanarkshire called Arbuckle - a shire in which the name often appears in the Parish Registers including the ancestors of Janet Arbuckle, wife of William Davidson.

The first of this family to be traced with certainty is John Arbuckle who was born about 1745 and was a shoemaker and cordwinder by trade.  He married Mary Young in Carmunnock on 22 Dec 1769 and they lived in that area which later became a part of the town of Cambuslang which is located about five miles southeast of Glasgow on the left bank of Clyde.

He had a thick brogue and piercing blue eyes and gave an impression of sterness and unquestionable obedience. He was a well read man, a man of integrity, industry and saving habits, but a man who lived close unto himself.

He came to the U.S. in 1853 with his wife Isabelle (Dale), daughter of David, whom he had married on 01 Mar 1839 in Glasgow. They were enumerated in the 1860 census residing in Paint Twp., Highland Co., Ohio with their three children. By 1870 the family was living near John's brother James' family in Page Co., Iowa.

His wife Isabelle died in 1875 in Villisca, Montgomery Co., Iowa, and in December of 1876 he married Celia Jane (Heaton) Edwards, widow of Nathan and daughter of Benjamin Heaton who was born 23 Aug 1830 in Madison Co., Illinois. In 1880 the family was listed residing in Nodaway Twp., Taylor Co., Iowa where they were located on a good farm of ninety acres, well improved, comfortable buildings, orchard, etc. Their household included John, his 2nd wife Celia "Jane" her sons Charley and Stillman Edwards, and John's granddaughter Cora Williams.

In 1885 the John and Celia were enumerated in the Iowa State census residing in Taylor county. Also dwelling with them, but head of his own household is Benjamin Edwards, his wife son - he being the son of Celia by her first husband Lathan who died in 1866. John's daughter, Margaret (wife of Edwin Pierce) and family are also residing in this county with their five children.

John died on 18 Jan 1899* in Villisca, Iowa and in 1900 his widow was listed in that city as widowed and residing alone. She died on 04 Nov 1904 in Villisca and was buried beside her first husband, Lathan Edwards, at North Grove Cemetery in Page Co., Iowa.

They sailed from that city on 23 Aug 1850 and were the first of either family to leave for America. After six weeks, they landed at New York on 02 Oct 1850, and during the voyage across, the infant son died and they buried him in the bosom of the broad Atlantic.

They first came to Kanawa Co., West Virginia, making their home there for over a year and them moved to Highland Co., Ohio. In the Fall of 1858 they, along with six other families, journeyed to Iowa. In 1860 they were enumerated in Jackson Township in Montgomery county, but shortly afterward settled in Page county, five and one-half miles southeast of Villisca.

At the time the 1870 census was taken, the family was living in Valley Township and just a few houses from William and Jane Bryson and James' brother John Arbuckle. The family resided in Page county (listed in the 1880 & 1885 census) until the spring of 1889, when they moved one mile east of Villisca where James died on either in November of 1893 or on 27 Dec 1893.

According to family notes, she became a Christian, uniting first with the Presbyterian Church in Scotland and after coming to Iowa she united with the Christian Church of which she was a faithful and devoted member. Her life was one of devotion to her family and she left to them the blessed memory of a mother's love and devotion.
