Robert was the son of
William Arbuckle and Janet (Dyer). He was
born in Carmunnock, Lanark, Scotland on 26
Aug 1821 and was said to have been a big man
over six feet tall and built accordingly, - a
real sandy-haired Scotsman and master of his
household.
He
married Jean (McNiven) in Carumunnock on the
5th of February in 1847. Jane was said to
have been about 5'4", very feminine,
sweet and kind, but firm. They lived in Busby
where their first four children were born,
and then emigrated with his parents, three
siblings and Jean's brothers Peter and James
McNiven to Canada where they may have lived
in Middlesex County before settling in Minto,
Wellington county of Ontario on Lot 76
Concession D.
Robert's
parents lived with him during this time. In 1861 Robert had 100 acres, 27 under
cultivation and crops and the remainder being
wooded or wild - the cash value given as
$1.500 and the implements were worth $34.
About half the cleared acreage was planted
with spring wheat. other crops included
barley, peas, oats, potatoes, turnishp and he
produced aa few pounds of hops as well as
butter and cheese, 100 pounds of maples
sugar. No horses were reported on the farm at
this time, the heavry work having been done
by a pair of oxen.
In
1871, Robert's family
(including his wife and ten children) were
enumerated in the census where they continued
to reside in Minto Township. On or about the
month of May 1880, they came to the United
States and landed at the port of Detroit and
Robert swore on oath renouncing the Queen of
Great Britian on 28 July 1884 (Naturalization
Records from Ironwold Discover Center in
Chisholm, MN). They lived first in Otter Tail
Co., Minnesota where they were enumerated in
the 1880 census, and then
removed to Wadena County, Minnesota where
they lived the remainder of their lives,
having been enumerated in the 1885 and 1895 state census records.
Jean
passed away 21 Jun 1890, and Robert on 27 Feb
1895. They were both laid to rest at the Wadena City Cemetery.
