Letter Addressed to: Christopher Anthony & Eleanor (Mossman) Ballard
Dated: 20 Dec 1827 - Grayson Co., Virginia
From: George and Hannah (Brown) Mossman

Note: George Mossman is son of Archibald & Margaret (Young) Mossman, born 1804 in Grayson Co., VA; married Hannah Brown, daughter of Samuel & Mary (Thornburg) on 22 Aug 1822 in Grayson Co., VA. This portion of Grayson county was formed from Wythe County in 1793.

Additional Notes: Eleanor ( Mossman) was the daughter of Archibald and Margaret (Young) Mossman of Berwick England, and she was born on 29 November 1791 and emigrated with her parents in 1795, settling in Grayson County, Virginia. Archibald's father was George Mossman who died 04 Mar 1771 when Archibald was but six weeks old. His mother married a man by the name of Banks. Different notes indicate it was Thomas, Joseph or John Banks.

Regarding Philip Ballard, I have found evidence of a Curtis Ballard, son of Philip and Ann (Johnson) who married Esther Gaines in 1781 and removed to Kentucky. His brother Larkin, married in 1786 Elizabeth Gaines, sister of Esther who married Curtis who had also removed to Kentucky and died at the age of 84 in Fayette County. Their brother Johnson Ballard married in 1791 and died in Kentucky (Source: Marriages of Some Virginia Residents 1607-1808 by Dorothy Ford Wulfeck).

Although I've not directly linked these Ballard men to Christopher, I suspect a connection does exist due to the fact that many ancestors married into the Johnson family and had also removed to Ohio and Kentucky. pdp - March 2004
