BARNES PAINTING TO PRESIDENT TRUMAN

"Front Street" By the Former Oma Belle Landreth, Selected As Gift

Mrs. F. N. Barnes of Dodge City, Kans., the former Miss Oma Belle Landreth of this city, again has won recognition as an artist. In a recent edition of the Dodge City Journal a four column picture shows President Harry S. Truman receiving a painting, "Old Front Street", painted by Mrs. Barnes.
The photograph, taken when the president visited Dodge City on a recent tour, shows President Truman standing on the rear platform of his special train surrounded by young women, one of whom is Mrs. Barnes.
" Old Front Street", painted after a great deal of research by Mrs. Barnes, shows Dodge City as it looked in 1875. The picture was purchased by the Democratic County committee and then presented to President Truman.

Origin of Wyandotte Church Typifies Spirit of Early Settlers in Area

Bro. Cornelius W. Hurley married Mary E. Wyatt, daughter of Sampson Wyatt and it was a rainy day with roads bad at the funeral of Samantha Coulson Newman, April 25, 1894, when Bro. Hurley made the remarking for a church house at the old Wyandotte Cemetery.
The project was started immediately with donations of time and money coming from the surrounding territory.
Lumber was hauled from Bucklin.
Rock came from Coulson Bridge Quarry.
Bill Langwell, Bob Harper, and others worked at cutting and spreading the rock and John Burnett furnished a team to help get the rock out and hauled. Bob Harper also helped with the general building as the whole community worked together on the project. Mrs. Bob Harper was the first organist at Wyandotte Church, according to Rowena Harper Branson.
The first funeral service, according to Elizabeth Jenkins, was that of her mother, Martha Ann Newman, who passed away Wed. Jan. 15, 1896.
A few years passed. Dedication of the Methodist Episcopal South Wyandotte Church was held July 23, 1897.
At the dedication Bro. Hurley said, "The debt on the church is $100." Isaac Sights (Ike), rising said, "I will give as much as Bro. Hurley toward the debt." Bro. Hurley stated, "Friends, the debt is paid."
At the dedication it was stated since Ben F. Sights, Bucklin, Robert L. Anderson, Bucklin and Dr. J.C. Scott from St. Catherine had given the most money for the new church, they should receive choice lots in the new cemetery.
The dedication was held on Sunday. Ben F. Sights died on July 26, 1897, due to a severe injury on his farm. He was 61.
Dr. Scott was born June 24, 1840 and died March 15, 1905.
Robert L. Anderson was born May 12, 1848, the first to be born in Wyandotte Hotel, town of Wyandotte. He died June 7, 1923. Bro. Hurley died Feb. 10, 1923.
This history of Wyandotte community has been pieced together through stories of the early day events and accounts taken from books, and papers published later in the 1800s.   One by one have the old landmarks of the community disappeared until now the Wyandotte 4-H Club feels we must preserve the Wyandotte Church as it is dear to the hearts of many. - by Mrs. Ola Miller, taken from Old Yellow Creek, by Coulson, Ramsey, Burnett.

These obituaries were cut out of newspapers and glued onto colored scraps of paper and neatly tied with a green satin ribbon. It appears as those a booklet was intended. Where a newspaper was cited, I will include, otherwise, I will assume they appeared in the Marceline or Bucklin newspapers.
