1. JOHN1 EMERSON was born Abt. 1745 in Prince Georges County, Maryland. He married PENELOPE.

Notes for JOHN EMERSON:

Occupation; Farmer. John Emerson took the "Oath of Fidelity and Support" to the State of Maryland during the Revolutionary War.

[ Prince George's County grew in the 1700's. Its land was settled, and frontier became civilization. Men and women from all parts of the British Isles, as well as other countries of Europe, came to find homes here. Some came as freemen, others as indentured servants. Africans were also a part of the growing population, brought here to work as slaves. As the years went by, trading centers along the rivers grew into towns places like Marlborough, Nottingham, Bladensburg, Queen Anne, and Piscataway. Merchants built stores; lawyers and doctors established practices; clergymen consecrated churches; and innkeepers opened their doors to travelers and residents alike. Some iron was even mined and worked in the upper Patuxent region. But Prince George's County, despite this growth, remained predominantly agricultural. Agriculture was the basis of the economy and directly or indirectly provided the livelihood for every resident. One crop was at the heart of this agricultural economy and that crop was tobacco. ]

[The connection between the English Emersons and the name Aimeric (later Emeric) apparently dates from the twelfth century. The name comes from the origins in the Aquintania Province in the Loire Valley of France. The original Emerson spelling was Emeryson or Emerissen derived from Emeric by adding "son" or "sen". An uncle, Philip, came to the Durham area and was a clerk in attendance at the Crusades to Richard I (Coeur de Lion). He came to Durham in 1195 as a Baron of the Exchecquer and was concecrated Bishop of Durham in May 1197. Aimeric also came to Durham in 1195, ordained in 1196, and became Archdeacon of Durham Cathedral in 1196. When King John came to power Aimeric was practically ruined.

Details are still hazy in some areas, but appearently Emersons abounded in the valleys near the River Wear and particularly in Weardale and the Forests of Stanhope Park. Many of these details are to be found in the works of Rev. Charles Pope and Dr. Ralph Emerson.

The migration from the Durham area to the County of Licolnshire (Cadney Parish) by many our the American Emerson ancestors apparently occurred in the 1500s. Of course, the later emigration to America by three of these Emersons (Elizabeth, Robert, and Michael) is well documented.

He married SARAH FRANCES FANNY BOOTHE Abt. 1795 in Maryland, daughter of JOHN BOOTHE and MARY BOOTHE. She was born 1778 in Maryland or Delaware, and died 1860 in Jones County, Georgia.

William EMERSON was 'Head of Household' in Jones Co. in 1820 Census

His will mentions wife Sarah, sons William, James, Benjamin, Zachariah and daughter Betsy Tamplin. His will is recorded in Will Book C, page 193 - 1830 Jones County, Georgia. They may have moved to Jones County, GA in 1808. He bought a piece of land from a person who won land in the lottery after the removal of the Indians. He managed to obtain 80 acres in Hancock which he paid taxes on in 1808, however there is no deed in his name. At the same time he owned 101.25 acres in Jones Co., GA; the tax on the latter was $1.39

He was in Company L. This information came from Pike County Soldiers in the 15th Alabama Infantry Regiment. Francis M Emerson is listed in the 1850 US Pike Co., Alabama Census as a 22 year old son living with John Emerson. He was married and may have had some children before dying in the Civil War.

JOHN EMERSON CURINGTON

John Emerson Curington was born in Georgia in 1859 and later

married Georgia Ann Posey of Alabama. In 1883 they brought

their daughters Minnie and Hettie along with their sons Elma,

Bub, Thomas, and John Richard to Corsicana, Texas where they farmed for

a living.

About 1890 he moved his family to Rural Shade, Texas. His son, John

Richard, later became sheriff of Navarro County and then even later District Attorney.

His daughter, Minnie lived to be 101 years of age.

Both John Emerson Curington and Georgia Ann Curington are buried in the

Long Prairie Cemetery in Navarro County.
