WHO
WAS DAVID PORTERFIELD, SR.?
Frances
Porterfield Willis, editor of the (now out of print)
family newsletter, Porterfield Lines, stated
in Volume III, No. 2, March 1993,
"The
central question in trying to reconstruct the history
of the Georgia Porterfields is, Who was David
Porterfield? A wealth of genealogical facts
dating from his marriage to Sarah Nunn on December
3, 1778 in Guilford County, North Carolina prove
that David Porterfield was the progenitor of the
Georgia Porterfields
."

For many
years numerous family researchers could trace David
Porterfield, Sr., only back to Guilford County, North
Carolina, and his marriage to Sarah Nunn in 1778. That
marriage was documented by a marriage bond record listed
in An Index to Marriage Bonds Filed in the North
Carolina State Archives. (Record # 02358. Raleigh,
NC: North Carolina Division of Archives and History,
1977) Unfortunately, for an equal number of years the
marriage bond was the only official record found in
the State of North Carolina or anywhere else that mentioned
David Porterfield or Sarah Nunn before they migrated
to Georgia in 1787. Still, Porterfield researchers wanted
to know:
Who was
David Porterfield, Sr.?
- (a)
Was he a descendant of the Porterfields of Cumberland
County, North Carolina as stated by Frank Burke
Porterfield in his 1947 book The Porterfields, or
(b) was he a descendant of another line?

- Who
were his parents and where did they come from?

- Who
were his grandparents and where did they come from?
- He
was a Pioneer! Was he also a Patriot?
(New data, Nov 2005)
- (a)
Who were David Porterfield, Sr.s children?
(Updated 2005, new data)

(b) Elizabeth
and Mary, Daughters or Granddaughters?
- Who
Was the Other Unidentified Porterfield Female?
