First Generation  

1. David PORTERFIELD, Sr.,1 2 3 son of James PORTERFIELD and Mrs. Catherine MAXWELL, was born circa 1755 in Drumore Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania 1 2 3 and died circa 1835 in Madison County, Georgia at age 80.


Noted events in his life were:

• Family Note of Interest: 4 The family newsletter Porterfield Lines states: "The relationship of David, Sr., Christopher, [Thomas] James, and David, Jr., are borne out by their close association through the years as shown by both census and land records. Land records including land exchanges and ownership of adjoining lands."

• The family newsletter Porterfield Lines states: "David and Sarah (Nunn) Porterfield, who married 3 Dec 1778, removed from Guilford County, North Carolina to Wilkes County, Georgia sometime after the birth of their second child, James Porterfield. The date can be set before or in 1787 for the name David Porterfield appears on the 1787, 1790, and 1791 Wilkes County Tax Digest." 5

• David Porterfield, Sr.'s name was on a list of Elbert County voters that appeared in the Summer 1987 issue of Georgia Genealogical Magazine and was described as follows:

"The crude list of voters to elect a delegate to the state convention of 1795 was found in the Willaim Barnett, Pre-1800 File II, on microfilm reel 202-47, Georgia Department of Archives and History. These voters elected William Barnett as their delegate over a man named Allen, 208 to 49. The return was certified by Jas. Tait, Jas, McCaskey, and Thos. Cook, Justices of the Peace." 6

• From the Will of John Maxwell:

"...I give and bequeath to my Brother David Porterfield [emphasis added] fifty dollars...." 7

• David appeared on the 1817 Tax Digest in Madison County, Georgia.

The transcribed tax digest appeared in the Georgia Genealogical Magazine Vol. 33, No. 2-3 (Issues 128-129), Spring/Summer 1993, p 131-43:

David was listed right under his son, James. 8

• David appeared on the 1820 Census Report in Madison County, Georgia.

• David appeared on the 1830 Census Report in Madison County, Georgia.

(i.e., 1 male 70-80 and 1 female 60-70) 2

David married Sarah NUNN 1 10 on Dec 3, 1778 in Guilford County, North Carolina.1 10 Sarah was born in 1760 in North Carolina and died after 1850 in Georgia.

Noted events in her life were:

• Family Note of Interest: The 1850 DeKalb County, Georgia, Census lists a Lucindia or Lucretia Porterfield, age 90 and blind, born in North Carolina, as living in the Josiah and Rebecca (Porterfield) Graham household. The North Carolina birth place and a birth date of 1760 would fit with Sarah (Nunn) Porterfield, however, no records have been found to indicate her first or middle name was Lucindia or Lucretia. If Lucindia was a sister of David Porterfield, Sr., no previous record of her existence ever came to light.

+ 2 M i. Christopher PORTERFIELD 12 13 14 15 was born circa 1780 in North Carolina 13 14 15 and died circa 1834 in Carroll County, Georgia 13 15 at age 54.


+ 3 M ii. Thomas James PORTERFIELD 16 17 18 19 20 was born in 1782 in North Carolina 16 17 and died in Jan 1863 in Madison County, Georgia 16 17 18 19 at age 81.
