Gloucester; Printed from the Original Papers of the late Ralph Bigland (Garter
Principal King of Arms, died 1784). London: Printed by John Nichols for H.
Bigland, I (1786-91), II (1791-95), volume II, pages 50-57. See especially page
50 with its reference to Stinchcomb's Chantry in the Church of St. Mary the
Virgin, Hawkesbury, established in 1452, 30 Henry VI, with lands for its
endowment at Chalkley in that parish. "The Chantry was founded by one of
the Family of Stinchcomb, whose Arms, Quarterly, 1. and 4. a Fess engrailed
between three Annulets braced with another; 2. and 3. a Chevron between three Garbs
are still extent." Nicholas's elder brother, Thomas Stinchcomb, yeoman,
who according to his will, dated 2 February 1662/3 and proved 5 April 1666,

Notes for Thomasine Mastey:
Thomasine (born in or before 1655), who in
her will, dated 18 August 1673, refers to her mother Joan Mastey (that is
Massey). It is inferred that she was a
daughter, stepdaughter, or sister of a Ralph Massey, of Anne Arundel or
Baltimore Counties, who on 3 March 1668/9 and 28 February 1669/70 witnesses
deeds recorded in Baltimore County (Md. Hist. Mag., XXV, 259; XXVI, 228,
229). He does not again appear in the
Baltimore County Land Record through 1685.
She may also have been a sister or aunt of Jonathan Massey, who appears
in 1699 as a taxable in Patapsco Hundred of Baltimore County and dies testate
in North Gunpowder Hundred in 1732 (Baldwin, VI, 28). She died testate shortly before 24 November 1673.

Baltimore, Maryland, and died Abt. May 1710 in Baltimore, Maryland. He married (1) Hannah Randall 1697,
daughter of Christopher Randall and Johanna Norman. She was born Abt. 1682 in Anne Arundel county, Maryland, and died
Aft. 1740.
Notes for Nathaniel Stinchcomb:
Nathaniel Stinchcomb, elder and sole
surviving son of Nathaniel Stinchcomb and his wife Thomasine, was born on
"The Tanyard," in Broad Neck Hundred, Anne Arundel County, about
1671, and died intestate on "The Tanyard," in the Upper Part, North
Patapsco Hundred, Baltimore County, shortly before 13 June 1710. He is named as a son in his mother's will,
18 Aug 1673, and as a legatee in the wills of John Baldwin and Elizabeth
Baldwin his widow, of Middle Neck Hundred, Anne Arundel County, on 12 June 1682
and 29 Dec 1687 (MHR: Wills, liber 1, folios 586-89; liber 4, folio 43; liber
2, folio 217).
He married, probably in Baltimore County,
about 1697, Hannah (born about 1682), daughter of Christopher Randall of
"Norman's Fancy," in Broad Neck Hundred, Anne Arundel County
It would appear from a petition of James
Foster of Anne Arundel County, dated 6 October 1692, that Nathaniel Stinchcomb,
as a minor, had sold his Anne Arundel County lands to this Foster and, on
reaching his majority, had sold them again to Mr. William Hopkins (Archives of
Maryland, VIII, 379-80). He
subsequently sold "Privilege," in Baltimore County, to Capt. Thomas
Long of that county, by a deed of 20 November 1703; and it was confirmed to
Long's son, John Long, by Nathaniel's elder son and heir, in a deed of 6
October 1758 (MHR; Baltimore County Land Record, liber TR #A, folios 119-20;
liber B #G, folios 240-41).
At or soon after his marriage Nathaniel
acquired "The Tanyard," named for his birthplace, 193 acres in the
Upper Part, North Patapsco Hundred, Baltimore County, surveyed for him on 1698 and resurveyed on 22 August
1702. To this he added an adjacent
tract, "The Reserve," sometimes called "Addition," or
"The Quarter," 200 acres, surveyed for him on 29 September 1704. The combined tract of 393 acres formed his
dwelling plantation. It was adjacent to
"Stout," the home of his brother-in-law Christopher Randall, and
adjacent to or very near the plantations of William Hamilton and John
Whipps. Of it Charles Carroll,
barrister (d. 1782) in his "Collection of Land Certificates," says: "Stinchcomb mortgaged this to Brice
which was redemed by Edward Teal who entailed it to his Daughter Ruth Teal for
whose Husband Edmond Howard J. Gardiner run it" (quoted in Md. Mist. Mag.,
XVI, 245). The deed by Sarah Brice of
Anne Arundel County, widow of John Brice, to Edward Teal, is dated 28 April
1720 (MHR: Baltimore County Land Record, liber TR #DS, folios 209-12).
An inventory of the estate of "Capt.
Nathaniel Stinchcomb" taken on 13 Jun 1710 by John Israell and John Whipps
and presented on __ January 1710/11 by "Edwd Teal et ux.," shows a
personal estate of L 75.17.8. It is
signed by John Brice and John Harriman as creditors and by (Stinchcomb's
brothers-in-law) Christopher and Thomas Randall as "of kinn". (MHR: Baltimore County Original Inventories,
box 3, folder 36, photostat). On 2
March 1712/3 Edward Teale and Hannah his wife submit their account (MHR:
Baltimore County Original Accounts, box 3, folder 12, photostat).
Nathaniel and Hannah Stinchcomb appear to
have had seven children. Of these the
paternity of three (Mary, John, and Nathaniel) can be readily
demonstrated. That of Helen is
supported by abundant but rather diffuse evidence. That of the others can at present only be presumed. The names of Hannah and Anna suggest that
they were twins.

Notes for Hannah Randall:
Hannah (born about 1682), daughter of
Christopher Randall of "Norman's Fancy," in Broad Neck Hundred, Anne
Arundel County, by his wife Johanna, and sister of Christopher Randall and
Thomas Randall, half sister of George Norman and of Amy Norman wife of Hector
Maclane, all of Baltimore County. Hannah; married first, in or about 1797,
Nathaniel Stinchcomb of "The Tanyard" in North Patapsco Hundred,
Baltimore County, who died intestate shortly before 13 June 1710 She would
marry, secondly, in 1710, Edward Teal of "The Tanyard," who would die
testate shortly before 14 January 1720/21.
She would die intestate after 30 June 1740. (MHR: Baltimore County
Original Inventories, box 3, folder 36; Baltimore County Original Wills, box 3,
folder 68, photo.).
On 13 Jun 1710 her brothers Christopher
and Thomas Randall sign as "of kinn" an inventory of the estate of
her late husband "Capt. Nathaniel Stinchcomb" (see below). Under the name Hannah Teal she signs as "Sister" an
inventory of the estate of her brother Thomas Randall (3 August 1722), and one
of the estate of her brother Christopher Randall (20 September 1735). With her son John Stinchcomb she signs, on
30 June 1740, as "Nearest of Kinn" an inventory of the estate of her
daughter, Mary Smith (MHR: Baltimore County Original Inventories, box 3, folder

Notes for Anna Stinchcomb:
Anna, b. about 1706, presumed twin of
Hannah; m. prior to 11 February 1725/6, _____ Galloway of Baltimore
County. On this date she signs as a
witness the deed of Rachel Owings described above. As all other persons figuring in this deed are either Owingses or
Stinchcombs, and as Anna was probably not an Owings, she would appear to have
been a Stinchcomb. To this compiler the
fact that she could sign her name is strong subjective evidence pointing in the
same direction. Anna Stinchcomb,
daughter of (her brother) John Stinchcomb, born 2 Sept 1745 (St. Paul's
Register), would have been named for her.

Hancock. Rebecca Stinchcomb, eldest
daughter of (her brother) John Stinchcomb, born 4 March 1733/4 (St. Paul's
Register), would have been named for her.
Further research will probably show that she married a Hamilton, a Gardiner,
a Whipps, or a Baker.

Notes for John Newsome:
John Newsom, son of Thomas Newsom and
Catherine his wife, was born on "Delf" on 28 Sept 1694 and died on
"Contrivance," intestate, on 19 April 1720 (St. George's Reg.).
He married at St. George's Church, on 16
February 1714/15, "Mary Frinchecome," (St. George's Register) properly Stinchcomb, daughter of Capt.
Nathaniel Stinchcomb of "The Tanyard" in Upper North Patapsco
Hundred, Baltimore County, by his wife Hannah Randall, Stepdaughter of Edward
Teal of "The Tanyard," sister of John Stinchcomb and Nathaniel Stinchcomb,
niece of Christopher and Thomas Randall.
She survived him and married secondly, prior to 3 August 1723, William
Smith (son of George) of "Contrivance," in Spesutia Hundred (see
below). Smith died testate shortly
before 2 January 1738/9, and she died intestate shortly before 30 June
1740. An inventory of her estate, taken
on this date by George Stokes and Samuel Griffith, is signed as "Nearest
of Kin" by (her mother) Hannah Teale and (her brother) John Stinchcomb and
is presented on 23 September by her administrator (and son-in-law) John Bailey
(MHR: Baltimore County Original Inventories, box 9, folder 23, photostat).
On 3 August and 21 October 1723 warrants
were issued by the Commissaries General at Annapolis, in the name of the
Proprietary, to the Sheriff of Baltimore County, for the arrest of William
Smith and Mary his wife, "lately called Mary Newsum Relict and Admrx of
John Newsum late of your County Decd," who were to be required to show
cause why they refused to administer his estate (MHR: Testamentary Papers, box
29, folder 39, photostat).
In an additional account of the estate of
(Mary's stepfather) Edward Teal of "The Tanyard" (d. 1720), dated 15
May 1727, is the notation of a sum owed to (Teal's stepson-in-law) "John
Newsham" paid to "Mary Newsham Wido of sd Jno" (MHR: Accounts,
liber 8, folios 197-98, photostat). The
register of St. George's Church shows the births of two children:
I Thomas, b. 16 Dec 1715; named for his
paternal grandfather;
principal
legatee in his grandfather's will, dated 25 Jan 1720/1;
died
single on 5 March 1733/4 (St. George's Register).

notes of D.M.Owings
Notes for William Smith:
William Smith, son and heir of George Smith
by Hannah his wife, was born 1 May 1695 and died testate shortly before 2
January 1738/9. He is probably the
William Smith who was sheriff of Baltimore County in 1732/3 and he should not
be confused with William Smith of North Patapsco Hundred (son of James Smith
and brother-in-law of George Norman the younger) who died testate in 1731/2.
He married shortly before 3 August 1723,
Mary (born about 1698), daughter of Capt. Nathaniel Stinchcomb of "The
Tanyard," Upper North Patapsco Hundred, by Hannah Randall his wife,
stepdaughter of Edward Teal of "The Tanyard," sister of John and
Nathaniel Stinchcomb, and widow of John Newsom of "Contrivance" on
Delf Creek in Spesutia Hundred. On 3
August and 21 October 1723 warrants were issued by the Commissaries General at
Annapolis, in the name of the Proprietary, to the Sheriff of Baltimore County,
for the arrest of William Smith and Mary his wife, "lately called Mary
Newsum Relict and Admrx of John Newsum late of your County Decd," who were
to show cause why they refused to administer his estate (MHR: Testamentary
Papers, box 29, folder 39, photostat).
This Mary survived him briefly and died intestate shortly before 30 June
1740.
Soon after attaining his majority he sold
to James Phillips on Baltimore County, by a deed of 2 January 1716/7, his 200
acre plantation of Bush River (MHR: Baltimore County Land Record, liber TR #A,
folios 477-80). On his marriage in 1723
he settled on the Newsom plantation on Delf Creek consisting of
"Contrivance," 200 acres, and "Newsom's Meadow," 50
acres. This was at that time the
property of his stepson, Thomas Newsom.
At Thomas's death on 5 March 1733/4 (St. George's Register) it passed to
his sister, Helen Newsom, from whom, by a deed of 20 March 1736/7, Smith
purchased it (MHR: Baltimore County Land Record, liber HWS #M, folios
____). Meantime he had bought from
Roger Matthews of Baltimore County, by a deed of 8 November 1729,
"Benjamin's Choice," 254 acres, in Hedge's Neck of Spesutia Hundred
(MHR: Baltimore County Land Record, liber IS #K, folios 141-43).
In his will, dated 26 November 1738 and
proved 2 January 1738/9, he appoints his wife Mary executrix and names his
"four Children vizt: Wm Smith Junr, George Smith, Nathaniel Smith and
Hannah Smith." He leaves his dwelling
plantation of 250 acres on Delf Creek ("Contrivance" and
"Newsom's Meadow") to his wife for her life with reversion equally to
his sons George and Nathaniel Smith.
His executrix is to convey to "Hellen Newsom" the 254 acres of
"Benjamin's Choice." The will
is signed "Wm Smith" and is witnessed by Henry Hale, Aquila Paca, and
George Lester (MHR: Baltimore County Original Wills, box 5, folder 86,
photostat).
An inventory of his estate, taken on 29
June 1739 by George Stokes and Samuel Griffith, and presented on 23 August 1739
by Mary Smith, his administratrix, shows a personal estate of L292.1.4. It is signed by Josias Middlemore and Edward
Waken (presumably as creditors) and by Daniel Ruff and Henry Thomas (presumably
as relations). (Baltimore County
Original Inventories, box 8, folder 51; Inventories, liber 24, folios
166-68). On 1 September 1739 Mary
Smith, widow of William Smith, conveys to John and Helen Bailey (formerly Helen
Newsom) the tract called "Benjamin's Choice," being 254 acres. The witnesses are Richard Gist and Thomas
Sheredine (MHR: Baltimore County Land Record, liber HWS #IA, folios 271-73).
An inventory of the estate of Mary Smith,
late of Baltimore County, is made up on 30 June 1740 by George Stokes and
Samuel Griffith and presented on 23 September 1740 by her administrator (and
son-in-law) John Bailey. It shows a
personal estate of L320.12.6. currency and is signed by Nathan Rigbie and
Josias Middlemore as creditors, by (her mother) Hannah Teale and (her brother)
John Stinchcomb as "Nearest of Kin" (MHR: Baltimore County Original
Inventories, box 9, folder 23, photostat).
An account of her estate presented by John Bailey on 8 August 1747,
refers to "the dec's late husband William Smiths Estate" (MHR:
Baltimore County Original Accounts, box 8, folder 55, photostat). William and Mary Smith had four children,
all named in his will:
I William, named for his father.
II George, named for his paternal grandfather.
III Nathaniel, named for his maternal
grandfather.
IV Hannah, named for her two grandmothers.

Children of Mary Stinchcomb and John
Newsome are:
89 i. Thomas8 Newsome, born December 16, 1715;
died March 05, 1733/34.
90 ii. Helen Newsome, born August 14, 1718 in Maryland. She married John Bailey; born in Maryland;
died 1789 in Maryland.
Notes for Helen Newsome:
Helen Newsom, daughter of John Newsom and
his wife Mary Stinchcomb, was born on "Contrivance" on 14 August 1718
and died in 1801. She married, shortly
before 1 September 1739, her half second cousin, John Bailey (sic) of Baltimore
County, son of George Baley of that county by his wife Sarah Maclane. On the death of her brother, Thomas Newsom,
5 March 1733/4, she inherited the old Newsom homestead, consisting of
"Contrivance," 200 acres, and "Newsom's Meadow," 50 acres,
on Delf Creek, where she was residing with her mother and her stepfather. This plantation she conveyed to her
stepfather, William Smith, by a deed of 20 March 1736/7 (MHR: Baltimore County
Land Record, liber HWS #M, folios _____).
Pursuant to directions embodied in Smith's will, 26 November 1738, his
widow and executrix, Mary Smith, conveyed to John and Helen Bailey (formerly
Helen Newsom), by a deed of 1 September 1739, "Benjamin's Choice,"
254 acres in Hedges' Neck of Spesutia Hundred (MHR: Baltimore County Land
Record, liber HWS #IA, folios 271-73).
John Bailey died in 1789. As
administrator of the estate of (his mother-in-law) Mary Smith, he presented an
inventory on 23 September 1740 and an account on 8 August 1747 (MHR: Baltimore
County Original Inventories, box 9, folder 23; Baltimore County Original
Accounts, box 8, folder 55, photostats).
On 8 February 1762 he witnesses, with (his wife's uncle and her first
cousin) Henry Owings and Henry Owings, Jr., the will of Henry's brother, John
Owings of "Long Acre," Upper North Patapsco Hundred; and on 13
October 1765 he signs as a surety, with John Robinson, the bond of the widow
and executrix, Asenath Owings (MHR: Baltimore County Original Wills, box 11,
folder 53; Testamentary Proceedings, liber 41, folio 217, photostats). It is probable that John Owings's earlier
wife, Hannah, who had died on 22 January 1738/9 (St. Paul's Register), was a
Stinchcomb and hence an aunt of Bailey's wife.
It was presumably in the interest of her children that Bailey was chosen
to act as a surety.
Children of Mary Stinchcomb and William
Smith are:

92 ii. George Smith.
93 iii. Nathaniel Smith.
94 iv. Hannah

1700 in Broad Neck Hundred, Anne Arundel County,Maryland, and died Bef. 1777 in
Baltimore, Maryland. He married Katherine
MacLane July 23, 1733 in Saint Pauls Parish, Baltimore, Maryland, daughter
of Hector MacLane and Amy Norman. She
was born Abt. 1710 in Maryland, and died Bef. June 08, 1791 in Baltimore,
Maryland.
Notes for John Stinchcomb:
.
John Stinchcomb, elder son of Capt. Nathaniel Stinchcomb of "The
Tanyard," by his wife the former Hannah Randall, was born in 1700
according to his deposition of 1767. He
died testate shortly before 10 September 1779.
He married in Baltimore County, about
1733, his half first cousin, Catherine (born in or before 1718), daughter of
Hector Maclane of "Hector's Fancy," in Upper North Patapsco Hundred,
by Amy Norman, daughter of George Norman and Johanna of Anne Arundel
County. Her father left her, in his
will, dated 2 July 1722 and proved 1 October 1722, half (150 acres) of
"Hector's Chance," which, in her own will, dated 10 August 1790 and
proved 18 June 1791, she describes as her dwelling plantation and leaves
equally to her sons Christopher and Enoch Stinchcomb (MHR: Baltimore County
Original Wills, box 4, folder 20; Baltimore County Wills, liber 4, folios
553-55, photostats).
John Stinchcomb was a captain of militia
(cf. his deposition of 1767 above) and was in 1748-50 and 1754-56 a member of
the vestry of St. Thomas's Parish. As
elder son he inherited his father's remaining land, "Stinchcomb's Park,"
600 acres, which by will he divided among his sons Maclane, William,
Christopher, and Enoch Stinchcomb. By
patent and by purchase he acquired numerous other tracts, but he probably
resided on his wife's part of "Hector's Chance."
On 23 September 1734 he witnesses, with
(his half brother) Emanuel Teale and (his first cousin-in-law) Samuel Owings,
the will of (his uncle) Christopher Randall of "Stout" (MHR:
Baltimore County Original Wills, box 5, folder 51, photostat).
On 30 June 1740 he signs, with (his
mother) Hannah Teale, as "Nearest of Kin" an inventory of the estate
of (his sister) Mary Smith, which was then presented by (his nephew-in-law)
John Bailey, her administrator (MHR: Baltimore County Original Inventories, box
9, folder 23, photostat).
On ______ 1746 he signs, with (his first
cousin) Christopher Randall son of Thomas, as "relations," an
inventory of the estate of Henry Butler of "The Hope," late husband
of (their half first cousin and his wife's full first cousin) Susanna Norman
(MHR: Baltimore County Original Inventories, box __, folder __).
On 23 February 1746/7 he signs, with (his
half brother) Emanuel Teal, apparently as a relation, an inventory of the
estate of (his brother) Nathaniel Stinchcomb of "Bachelor's Hope"
(MHR: Baltimore County Original Inventories, box 10, folder 52,
photostat). He and (his first cousin)
Christopher Randall son of Thomas then serve as sureties for Patience
Stinchcomb the administratrix (MHR: Accounts, liber 25, folios 149-51, photo).
His will is dated 30 September 1775 and
proved 10 September 1779 and is witnessed by Stephen Treacle and (Henry
Butler's grandsons) Benjamin Wells, Jr., and Absalom Wells. In it he appoints his wife Catherine and his
sons Aquila and Maclane executors. He
mentions his sons Nathaniel, John, Aquila, George, Maclane, William,
Christopher, and Enoch, his grandson John Stinchcomb, son of his son Norman,
and his daughter Catherine Stinchcomb (MHR: Baltimore County Original Wills,
box 16, folder 44, photostat).

Notes for Nathaniel Stinchcomb:
Nathaniel, b. about 1704; an inventory of
his estate, dated 23 Feb 1746/7, is signed, apparently as kin, by (his brother)
John Stinchcomb and (his half brother) Emanuel Teal (MHR: Baltimore County
Original Inventories, box 10, folder 52, photostat).
Nathaniel Stinchcomb, younger son of Capt. Nathaniel Stinchcomb of
"The Tanyard" by Hannah Randall, was born about 1704 and died
intestate shortly before 22 February 1746/7.
He married, in Baltimore County, about
1733, Patience, who survived him and married, secondly, about 1749, Jacob
Rowles of Baltimore County. She was
probably a daughter of Major Richard Colegate of Patapsco Hundred whose will is
dated 8 Aug 1721 and proved 16 February 1721/2 and is witnessed by William
Connell, Edward Cox, George Newport, William Wright, and William Tucker. In it he appoints his wife Rebecca and his
son Richard executors. Legatees are his
wife and his children Richard, John, Thomas, Benjamin, Prudence, Patience, and
Temperance. To Patience and Temperance
he leaves "Friend's Discovery," 500 acres, and other lands bought of
Edward Williams of North Carolina (MHR: Wills, liber 17, folio 230; Baldwin, V,
104).
On 11 February 1725/6 Nathaniel Stinchcomb
witnesses, with (his sister) Anna Galloway and Joshua Owings, a deed by Rachel
Owings, widow, conveying livestock to her "grandchildren,"
(Stinchcomb's niece and nephews) Mica (Michal), Elijah, and Bezaleel Owings
(children of Henry Owings by Helen Stinchcomb) (MHR: Baltimore County Land
Record, liber IS #H, folio 223, photostat).
On 20 December 1737 he purchases of (his
brother) John Stinchcomb of "Hector's Chance," 100 acres of
"Bachelor's Hope" and "Addition to Bachelor's Hope," 50
acres, in a deed witnessed by (his first cousins) Christopher Randall son of
Thomas, and Roger Randall son of Christopher.
To this he added on 10 August 1742, 75 acres of "Pistole,"
purchased of Vachel Denton of Anne Arundel County (MHR: Baltimore County Land
Record, liber HWS #I_, folios 41-43; liber TB #C, folios 63-65). He probably lived on "Bachelor's
Hope." He was in 1742-44 one of
the original vestrymen of St. Thomas's parish.
The inventory of his estate, made up by
William Hamilton and Cornelius Howard on 23 February 1746/7, and presented by
Patience Stinchcomb, his administratrix, on 3 March 1746/7, shows a personal
estate of L 416.14.6 currency. It is
signed by Thomas Hanson and James Hood as creditors and by (his brother) John
Stinchcomb and (his half brother) Emanuel Teal, apparently as relations (MHR:
Baltimore County Original Inventories, box 10, folder 52, photostat).
An account by Patience Stinchcomb, 8 July
1748, names (his brother) John Stinchcomb and (his first cousin) Christopher
Randall son of Thomas as her sureties and refers to a sum owed the vestry of
St. Thomas's parish. An additional
account, by Jacob Rowles and Patience his wife, widow of the deceased, 16 June
1750, names the children as Nathaniel, Patience, John, Sarah, Mary, and
Thomason (sic) Stinchcomb. They turn in
a second additional account on 4 August 1750 (MHR: Accounts, liber 25, folios
149-51; Baltimore County Original Accounts, box 9, folder 11; Accounts, liber
28, folios 214-15 (photostats).

151. George Stinchcomb9 Sr.
(William8 Stinchcomb, John7, Nathaniel6,
Nathaniel5, Nicholas Stinchcomb of4 Killcott, Thomas3
Stinchcomb, Nicholas2, Thomas1) was born Abt. 1779 in Anne
Arundel county, Maryland, and died in Anne Arundel county, Maryland. He married (1) Mary Hammond Abt. 1790
in Westmoreland, Pennsylvania, daughter of Daniel Hammond. She was born Abt. 1775 in Westmoreland
county, Pennsylvania, and died Bef. 1816 in Fairfield County (?), Ohio. He married (2) Mary "Polly"
Williamson 1816 in Fairfield County, Ohio, daughter of Peter Jr. and Kesiah
Unknown. She was born in Virginia, and
died Aft. 1832 in Seneca County, Ohio.
Notes for George Stinchcomb Sr.:
George is recorded in the History of
Butler County, Pa as having settled in Clinton Township in 1796, along with
George Plants. George occupied the
Phillip Snyder Farm, making the first improvements there. Barnett Stepp occupied
the farm after George, and died there.
Below from the 1883 History of Butler co.,
Pa
A BEAR STORY
In the early years of the settlement as
Patrick HARVEY was on his way to SARVER's Mill one day, he tracked a bear, and
following up the trace, ran the brute into a den of rocks some distance above
SARVER's. Returning home, he told his neighbors, and readily obtained their
promise to join him in his efforts to capture the bear. So, with George PLANTS,
George STINCHCOMB and two or three others, he returned to the spot with dogs,
guns and other paraphernalia of the chase. The dogs worried the bear so that
several times he issued forth, and each time was fired upon. Finally, he was
quiet in his den, and neither sending the dogs in nor discharging the guns into
the cavern served to move him, but his growls could be heard occasionally. The
party saw no way of getting at him and were about giving up, defeated. HARVEY
said, "Hold on, I'll go in and try him;" and having caused a rope to
be tied to his leg, so that he could be drawn out in case of attack, he took
his gun in his hand and crawled into the dark cave. Presently he saw two large
angry eyes, glaring like balls of fire. Bringing his weapon to his shoulder, he
aimed directly between them, fired, and soon the bear was dead. Then, taking
the rope from his own leg, he tied it to the bear and slowly backed out through
the narrow space by which he had entered. When he was outside his companions
speedily drew the dead bear out. He was a huge fellow, and his hindquarters
dressed over a hundred pounds each.
George
moved with his parents, William and Henrietta Stinchcomb to Westmoreland
county, Pa., about 1789/90. There he met/married Mary Hammond, the daughter of Daniel Hammond Sr.of Rostraver
Township. George is recorded on the Butler County, Pennsylvania, Tax List in
Middlesex Twp. in 1803, before moving to Thorn Township, Fairfield County, Ohio
where he is on the Tax List in 1806.
The 1790 Census for Hempstead Twp. In
Westmoreland County shows a "William Comb" with one Female in the household. I would believe
that this is William Stinchcomb, and William's wife Henrietta. With George already gone from his Father's
house,I believe that this would make George Sr.'s date of birth about 1770 to
1774, instead of about 1779. I would
tend to believe the earlier birthdate as George Sr. has a child with Mary
Hammond in Pennsylvania (James Stinchcomb) in 1791. I do not believe that
George fathered a child on Mary at 12 years of age, and the earlier birthdate
would make George about 18 to 21 years old, which is more believable.
Mary Hammond is evidently deceased by
1815, as George Sr. Marries Mary "Polly" Williamson on February 5,
1816 in Fairfield County. "Polly" is the daughter of Peter Williamson
Jr. and his wife Kesiah Low.
The Will of Daniel Hammond Sr., drawn in
1816, and proved in 1817 gives one third of his Estate to the children of his
daughter, "Mary Stench comb". Namely Daniel Camp, his/her* daughter
Catherine, James, George, and John.
* see notes for Catherine Stinchcomb below
to explain this mistake on the copied will of Daniel Hammond Sr.
……
The Stinchcombs live in Thorn Township,
Fairfield County until 1818, when Perry County is formed from Fairfield,
Muskingham, and Pickaway counties. Without moving an inch, the Stinchcombs are
now living in Thorn Township, Perry County, just across the County line from
New Salem in Walnut Township in Fairfield County.
Peter Williamson Jr.'s Verbal Will dated
1812 in Fairfield County names his two oldest sons, Abraham and William, and
his two oldest daughters Sidney and "Polly". Other children are
mentioned, but not named. This will was witnessed by Peter Williamson Sr., and
Ann Cross.
(
Ann Cross makes a deposition about the will, which confirms the contents of the
will as transcribed.)
The Will itself is found in the Fairfield
County Probate Court, Case number 79. (1812)
A Deed recorded in Volume T, pages 504 and
506 in Fairfield county in 1831 shows that George Sr., "Mary, his
wife", Joseph and Margaret Richards, and John and Eliza Lewis, all have to
sign the deed to sell the land of John W. Williamson (who is deceased) to David
Kauffman. Margaret and Eliza being sisters of Mary "Polly"
(Williamson) Stinchcomb, and all three being sisters of the deceased John W.
Williamson. (Not Proven)
In 1819, George sells land to Henry
Valentine, George Jr., James, and John Stinchcomb as "Tenants in
Common", in section 31, Township 18,Range 17, comprising 50 acres. This
land is part of a parcel that George Sr. bought from Edward Teal and his wife
Rebecca Teal, on February 7th, 1811 in Fairfield County. George's son Daniel
Camp Stinchcomb is not mentioned in this deed, and I would believe that Daniel
Camp is already deceased by this time.
George Stinchcomb Sr. migrates (moves) to
Seneca County, Ohio in 1828, with his sons James, and John Stinchcomb, and
Henry Valentine who has married Catherine "Kitty" Stinchcomb
(George's daughter ? ). Henry Valentine is the son of George Valentine, a
Revolutionary War Veteran.
Dr. Frank W. Gardner in his "Central Ohio Genealogical notes"
in vol. 28 National Genealogical Society Quarterly, mentions Catherine
Stinchcomb as Daniel Camp Stinchcombs daughter, " Proving" this by
the Will of Daniel Hammond of Rostraver twp., Westmoreland Co., Pa, where he
leaves his estate "To the children of my daughter Mary Stinchcomb, viz:
Daniel Camp and his daughter Catherine, George, James, and John Stinchcomb,
each a share of one third of my estate."
A
problem with this is that Daniel Camp Stinchcomb was born in 1791 in
Pennsylvania (Gardner), while Catherine was married to Henry Valentine in
October 1812, in Fairfield County, Ohio. Catherine would be a literal
"Child Bride" if she was Daniel Camp's daughter. In the area, and time period involved, it
would be more probable that Catherine was George and Mary's daughter. Catherine's birthdate would be between 1791
and 1798 to be married in 1812.( Ihave postulated a youngest age of fourteen
for marriage in 1812, with a birthdate of 1798). It is possible that Dr.
Gardner read Daniel Hammond's Will wrong.
If you read "and his daughter" as "and her
daughter", it makes more sense. (JSS)
The will that Dr. Gardner read was not the
original document. The original document is not to be found so far. The
existing copy of the will in the County will book was transcribed there by an
official in the County recording office. If Daniel Hammond's handwriting was
hard to read, the official could have made a mistake in transcribing the
original will into the will book. Thus giving Dr. Gardner a flawed document to
read, thereby causing an innocent error on his part in describing the will in
his article.
Dr. Gardner also relates that George's
Mother, Henrietta witnesses a deed for her son in Seneca County in 1831. (There
is no mention of William Stinchcomb in any Ohio records searched, so we are
assuming that he died and is buried in either Westmoreland, or Butler Counties,
Pennsylvania.) More research is needed to establish his place of death.
George Sr's son, George Stinchcomb Jr.
stays in Thorn Township, Perry County (Created from Fairfield , Muskingham, and
Pickaway counties in 1818), and lives there all of his life.
Additional note:
"George and Mary Stinchcomb move to
Ann Arundel County, Maryland in late 1831 or early 1832, where they buy land
from Benedict W. Marroth on April 2, 1832. George and Mary are deceased
sometime shortly after 1832 in Ann Arundel County, Maryland." ( per
Herbert Drucker)
Mr Drucker's assumption about George and
Mary moving to Maryland, and buying land there, is likely incorrect. Moving back
to the place where George came from would have been an admittance of failure on
George's part, and besides which, the process of moving was a hardship in
itself.
I believe this to be information about a
different George Stinchcomb. Information from Ellen Hurdel in Maryland who
looked up this deed leads me to believe that it was really George Stinchcomb,
and his wife Mary Cannon Stinchcomb, who have lived in Maryland for some years
previous to this.
The Methodist Episcopal Church of
Bloomville, Seneca County, has a
history extending over more than half a century, being almost a contemporary of
the old church at Mohnore, and a sharer in its official and ministerial life
for many years. In 1835 the society erected a house of worship on the
Stinchcomb farm, and the old building was carried down the years until a church
of native stone was erected. The membership of this church at Bloomville is
about 100, and the value of the property $3, 500. Rev. E. S. Tompkins is the
present pastor.

Notes for George Stinchcomb Jr.:
George Stinchcomb Jr. was a well liked and
respected man in his community as evidenced in the deed records of Perry County,
and by the tribute by Charles Milton Lewis (C.M.L.) Wiseman in his books.
George was a farmer in Perry County, Ohio,
and was also an Administrator for two Estates, where he supervised the sale of
land for the deceased individuals Estates. He was a "Trustee between the
Parties" in the Divorce of Jeremiah and Catherine Runkle on June 28, 1848.
He was the impartial "Third Party" that negotiated the settlement
between Jeremiah and Catherine, and arranged for Jeremiah's payments to
Catherine of One Hundred Dollars, and the recovery of Catherine's Dower
Property, and possessions. (George's fee was One Dollar)
George was a member of the Salem Lodge,
F&AM (Free and Accepted Masons of Ohio) in 1852.
The book, "Pioneers of Fairfield County,
Ohio" pub. 1901, by C. M. L.
Wiseman, states: "Ann Wiseman married George Stinchcomb. They were parents of the late Captain James
W. Stinchcomb. "
C.
M. L. Wiseman's booklet titled "The Wiseman Family and the Old Church at
New Salem" (written in 1887 and published in 1902) states:
Uncle George Stinchcomb,
who married Father's sister, Ann, and lived near neighbor to us all his life,
was an honest man of noble and generous impulses. No man, however humble, ever called upon him in sickness or any
kind of distress in vain. The night was
never too dark, the roads never too deep, the cold never too intense for him to
answer a call of distress. He raised
two sons, James W. and Frank, who were both men of decided ability, warm and
generous friends, and followed their father's example in doing kind and
generous deeds. James W. was a gallant
soldier of the Union army. They were
kind to me, and now that they are gone, I cheerfully make this record.
(Charles Milton Lewis Wiseman was the son of Philip S. and
Priscilla Lewis Wiseman. Philip S. Wiseman was a brother to Ann Wiseman
Stinchcomb.)
George Stinchcomb Jr.'s Will is dated
December 17, 1872.
After paying his "Just Debts",
he gives his daughter Susan Five Hundred Dollars. The remainder of the Estate
is divided three ways between Susan H. Stinchcomb, James W. Stinchcomb, and
Elizabeth W. (Stinchcomb) Pugh
There are two promissory notes due the
Estate from James W. Stinchcomb. One for Twenty Five Dollars, dated March 1st,
1875, and One for One Hundred Dollars, dated March 28th, 1874. Both Notes
bearing 5% interest.
There is a Promissory Note from James Pugh
(George Jr.'s son-in-law) for One Hundred Dollars, dated March 19th, 1874,
"Interest indorsed on back, one years interest paid".
All three Promissory Notes are charged as
assets of the Estate.
The will is witnessed by John Sherman, (
General William T. Sherman's brother, and later Senator) and Joseph G. Wiseman.
This Will was probated in open Court in Perry County, Ohio on July 16th, 1875,
and attested to by both John Sherman and Joseph G. Wiseman. (Joseph G. Wiseman
was also the Executor for his Father, The Reverend John Wiseman in 1842.)
George's Will contains three pages of
inventory listing his personal, and real property at the time of his death in
1875. Wheat in the field is valued at Two Dollars, while Corn in the field is
valued at One Hundred Dollars.

Notes for James W. Stinchcomb:
The benevolent and charitable institutions
follow close in the wake of the Christian churches, and, in their way, exercise
as great an influence for good as the churches themselves.
Freemasonry, the oldest of all the secret
organizations now in existence, is an order of "kingly origin and heavenly
aim," and takes for its guide the Holy Bible as its greatest light. To go
back to the origin of Masonry would be to go back almost to the beginning of
time itself, and our space will not admit of such research.
A
Masonic Lodge was organized in Mount Gilead more than thirty years ago. Mount
Gilead Lodge, No. 206, was chartered in October, 1851. The following are the
original members: W. C. Clark, Jas. W. Stinchcomb, A. K. Dunn, John B. Dumble,
Andrew Poe, T. P. Glidden, Israel Hite, J. A. Beebe, and S. T, Cunard. W. C.
Clark was the first Master, James W. Stinchcomb the first Senior Warden, and A.
K. Dunn the first Junior Warden. The charter is signed by Most Worshipful W. B.
Hubbard, Grand Master, and B. F. Smith , Grand Secretary. The first meeting was
held January 6, 1851, the lodge having been organized under dispensation at
that time, and chartered in October following. The following additional
officers were elected: T. P. Glidden, Treasurer; Andrew Poe, Secretary John B.
Dumble, S. D.; J. A. Beebe, J. D., and Israel Hite, Tiler. W. C. Clark, as
stated, was the first Master, A. K. Dunn the next, J. W. Stinchcomb the next,
and then A. K. Dunn served as Master for eighteen years in succession. The next
Master then was J. E. Smith, who served two years, then Allen Levering two
years. J. G. Miles is now serving his second year as Master. The present
membership is forty three, and J. G. Miles is Worshipful Master; W. C. Wilson,
Senior Warden; W. W. McCracken, Junior Warden - A. K. Dunn, Treasurer; W. G.
Irwin,

Gilead Chapter, No. 59, Royal Arch Masons,
was organized October 16, 1854, with the following charter
members: A. J. Smith, J. A. Beebe, W. C.
Clark, J. W. Stinchcomb, A. K. Dunn, J. D. Vore, W. H.
McKee, S. M. Hewett, C. P. Shurr and D. L.
Swingley. The original officers were W. C. Clark, High
Priest; J. W. Stinchcomb, King; A. K. Dunn,
Scribe. Grand High Priest H. M. Stokes issued the charter,
and it was countersigned by J. D. Caldwell,
Grand Secretary. The first meeting was held December 7,
1854, and Dr. I. H. Pennock was the first
initiate. There are fifty-two members upon the roll, and the
following are the present officers: A. K.
Dunn, M. E.; High Priest; B. B. McGowen, E.-. King; Allen
Levering, E.; Scribe; W. C. Wilson, Captain
of the Host; W. H. Burns, Principal Sojourner; W. W.
McCracken, Royal Arch Captain; G. S.
Newhouse, J. R. Miles, C. B. Levering, Grand Masters of the
Veils; W. W. McCracken, Treasurer; W. Smith
Irwin, Secretary, and S. W. Preston, Sentinel. A move
was made some years ago toward establishing
a Council of Royal and Select Masters, and permission
obtained, but from some cause the movement
was finally abandoned. There are several Knights Templar among the members of
the fraternity, but not a sufficient number to establish a commandery. So, at
present, a blue lodge and chapter are all the Masonic bodies in Mount Gilead.
