An Andrew J. Stillson married Mrs. Minnie Allen before the January 4, 1854 issue of the Danbury News Times, CT.

The 1850 census names this individual of Elk Creek, Erie County , Pennsylvania.

An Andrew Stilson was born in Ontario, Canada in 1850. The son of John Stilson. See John Stilson in this chapter for more information on Canadian Stilsons.

She also records an individual, parents unknown, named Asa b. in 1838 and their is a William Stilson shown as the son ofAsa Stilson b. 1821 and d. 1893. There are two Asa Stilson' s shown in this history .One b. 1809, the son of Abel Stilson, who is listed by Bertha Taft Keith as unmarried. There is also an Asahel Stilson b. in 1802 and a Asa Stilson b. 1795 in Maine, the son of Ager or Agur Stilson.

ASHBURY STILLSON
The Ohio 1850 census index shows an Ashbury Stillson living in Paris, Portage County , Ohio. In the original census Ashbury Stilson was living in Paris, Ohio. He was 11 years of age and his birthplace is shown as Ohio. He is the youngest child listed for A. Morrell Stillson. A. Morrell is aged 47 (birth about 1802), born in New York, a Laborer. His wife Aurilla P. Stillson, aged 44 years was born in New York (about 1806). Son George E. is aged 19 and is shown born in New York (about 1831). The youngest three children are all born in Ohio, Eliza J. Stillson, aged 17 (b. about 1833), Julia A. Stillson aged 14, (b. about 1836) and Ashbury. The family apparently came to Paris, Ohio 1832-1833 between the birth of George and Eliza.

ASAHEL STILSON

Records from the Georgia Genealogy by Elmore L. Brooks p. 23 lists an Asahel Stilson, b. November 18, 1802, in Meredith, Delaware, N .Y .He could have been a child of Cyrenus and Sara Stilson. Sarah's father was named Asahel so the link continues and there was a gap of several years that would allow for the birth of this son in 1802. He married in 1825 to Salome Georgia (daughter of Miles Georgia and Sally North) in Newfield, Tompkins, N .Y .She was born June 27, 1807 in Newfield. She may have died March 27, 1844. He may have later married Elsey Nelson. Asahel's date of death and Salome's date of death on the family sheet provided are the same. Since it lists a second wife for Asahel, it is assumed that the death date for him was inaccurately recorded and that it is the death date for Salome. Salome and Asahel had two daughters:

1. Phelena b. September 26, 1826 in Newfield, d. October 8, 1897, m. 1842 to James F. Newton.

A Phelena Stilson is shown as marrying James F. Newton at Mount Morris, Livingston, NY. Not conflfllled if this is the same Phelena, but no other record of a Phelena Stilson has been found to date. Marriage is recorded in LDS temple sealing records.

2. Harriet Salome Stilson, b. September 25, 1837, d. July 24, 1896, m. Orange C. West in 1866.

An Asahel B. Stilson is found in Meredith, Delaware County , N .Y .in the 1830 census.

Asahel B. is listed in Newfield, Tompkins County, New York in the 1840 census.

The 1850 New York census shows an Asahel Sti1son in Augusta, Oneida County, New York. It also lists a David Stilson, a Frederick P. Stilson and a Alpheus Stilson living in the town of Augusta at this time.

NOTE: There is one Asahel in the Stilson lineage. The son of Josiah Stilson shows Asahel born in 1789. In 1790 this family was residing in Bethelehem, Conn.

AMADENS STILLSON
There is an Amadens Stillson listed in the 1820 New York Census for Augusta, Oneida County , N .Y .The only other listing for this town in this census is Philo Stilson. There is an Amadeus Stilson that was born to Josiah Stilson in 1779. It is possible that the "u" was mistaken and written as an "n". The Josiah family was living in Bethelehem, CT. in 1790.

AMOS STILSON/AMOS STILLSON
Unfortunately the name was a fairly common one in the early Stilson history and several were born of that same name at nearly the same time. The following is a record for use of other individuals perusing the history of their ancestors that might be of help. There is an Amos (b. 1780) son of Moses, an Amos F. (b. 1779) son of Elijah.

An Amos F. Stilson and wife Rebecca are shown as having a daughter Tamra Stilson born July 23, 1806 in Augusta, Kennebec, Maine. Source: IGI records, Augusta birth records. Possibly the same Amos F. that was the son of Elijah.

The 1820 Census records for New York report a Amos Stillson in Franklin, Delaware County, New York and Moses Stilson (single L) in Florida, Montgomery County , N .Y .

The 1830 Census lists an Amos Stilson in Florida, Montgomery County, New York. And an Amos Stilson in Franklin, Delaware County , N .Y .Both single L spelling .

The 1840 Census of New York state lists only an Amos Stillson (double L once again) living in Florida, Montgomery County, N .Y .And an Amos Stilson still residing in Franklin, Delaware County , N .Y .A Gaylord Stilson, Orrin Stilson also are listed in the same town. In Franklin is William Stilson, Hiram Stilson and Ansel F. Stilson.

The 1850 Census record lists an Amos Stillson living in Bethlehem, Litchfield County , CT. Also in Bethlehem are Clarinda Stillson, J oseph Stillson, J r .and Samuel W. Stillson.

ANNIE STILSON
Joseph Young m. Annie Stilson on September 25, 1889 in Manti, Sanpete, Utah. Source is the LDS temple marriage records. Possibly related to Brigham Young's sister, Susannah Young, wife of William B. Stilson.

AVERY STILSON
Two listings appear for Avery Stilson's marriage to Mary H. Marble. One shows a marriage on March 17, 1849 in Millbury, Worcester, MA according to Millbury marriage records. The other shows a wedding on April 4, 1849 in Sutton, MA per Sutton Marriage records.

This is the listing in the 1840 census in Potsdam, St. Lawrence County, New York.

A Baker Stilson & Caroline is shown as having a daughter Elnor A. Stilson born June 24, 1870 in Allegan, Michigan. Source is state or county birth and christening records.

BENJAMIN STILLSON/BENJAMIN STILSON
There is a Benjamin "Stitson" in the 1800 census for Rhode Island. Unclear if it is a different family or an incorrect spelling.

The 1810 Census of New York lists a Benjamin Stilson in Delaware, County New York.

The 1840 Census of New York lists Benjamin Stilson in Duanesburg, Schenectady, N.Y.

BENSON STILSON
The 1850 census for Pennsylvania lists a Benson Stilson as a resident of Harrison, Potter County , Pennsylvania.

BERONAN STILSON/BENONIA STILLSON
There is a Beronan Stilson listed as a resident of Dele. County, New York, in the 1810 New York Census. At fIrst thought it appears that it might have been a misspelling for Benoni Stilson, and could be as the dates are right. However, land records do show Benoni in Newtown in 1809 and later in Pennsylvania.

Benonia Stillson listed in the 1850 census in Ellicott, Chautauqua, N .Y .Whether this is the same person as Beronan is uncertain. The census reports two other Stillsons living in Ellicott as Jane Stillson and Mary Stillson.

BEMAN STILSON
The 1830 N .Y .census records a Beman Stilson residing in Oswego, Tioga County , New York. No other records have been found for this name. A book called Soldiers of the War of 1812, Index of Awards notes that Beman Stilson, Potter Co. PA applied for $53.

BETSEY STILLSON

BLANCHE STILLSON
Born 1839. Listed as Indiana Author and their books, 1917, Who's Who of American Women 1966.

BRIGGS STILSON
The 1830 N. Y .census reports that Briggs Stilson was living in Amherst, Erie County, N. Y .We have no~ ascertained by any documentation that the Briggs in this census is the same as the father of Alvin Stillson, but it certainly seems likely. It is not noted in the article below why Alvin and his sister Kate left home at such a young age, unless their parents were possibly deceased.)

ALVIN HENRY STILLSON. b. February 25, 1829 in Fowler, N.Y., d. February 19, 1917 in Saugatuck, MI., buried in Riverside Cemetery , m. April 17 , 1850 Minerva Smeed at Saugatuck. She died February 10, 1917 at age 87 years, buried in the Riverside Cemetery Saugatauk, Twp. The 1860 census for Ganges Twp., Allegan, MI shows Alvin Stillson a farmer, aged 30 years born in New York residing with wife Minerva, aged 30, born in Pennsylvania, and children William B., Helen, Catharine and John. The 1870 census has him residing in Saugatuck, Allegan, MI with wife Minerva, children William, Helen, Catharine, John, Henry , Samuel, Minerva, Millie and a small mystery .Also listed in the household is William Stilson, 64 years and birthplace Vermont! Could William be a grandfather or an uncle? Alvin named one of his sons William.

Information from a book in the Seattle Public Library entitled Early Memories of Saugatuck, by May Francis Heath, page 204, reports the following: Alvin Henry Stillson, the eldest child of Sophia (Hutchins) and Briggs Stillson was born in the township of Fowler, N.Y., February 25, 1829. On July 5, 1838, he and his sister Kate, started in company with their uncle Elisha Pomeroy, from Rochester, N .Y ., for Allegan, MI. From Rochester to Buffalo they road by canal boat on the Erie canal, and from Buffalo to Detroit they came by steamer on Lake Erie. It so happened that they rode on the first trip of the first stage coach from Detroit to Ypsilanti. From the latter place to Allegan they came by open wagon, over roots, ruts and corduroy, or deep mud. (He once said they covered the last lap of the trip by rail, but they carried the rail along to pry the wagon out of the mud.) Seven days having been required in the trip from Rochester. He lived with his uncle, Harrison Hutchins, until his 16th year (1844), learned the carpenter's trade, as well as that of ship building, though he worked at other occupations from time to time, such as lumbering, saw-milling and farming. For eleven years he was a sawyer in mills in western Allegan County .In August, 1864, he enlisted in Co. I, 17th Mich. Vol, Inft, 9th Corps, 1st Division, 1st Brigade and served until the close of the war. In 1864 he was with his regiment at Hatch's Run, and in the two battles before Petersburg in 1865. On April 17, 1850 he m. Minerva Smeed at Saugatuck. (County Marriage records show marriage recorded in Allegan, MI.) One of the oldest and respected citizens of this section; our subject was an honored member of Saugatuck post of the Grand Army of the Republic

and was justly proud of the society badge. Their home was mostly in Saugatuck, where young and old were received with hearty welcome. Children of Alvin H. and Minerva Stillson were eight in number and were William Briggs Stillson, Helen Ann Stillson, Catherine Idella Stillson, John Charles Stillson, Henry Hannibal Stillson, Samuel C. Stillson, Minerva C. Stillson and Millie Frances Stillson. Mr. Stillson was said to be the oldest living son of the veteran in the U .S. His father Briggs Stillson, having served throughout the Civil War. He was a walking encyclopedia on local history from the time of William Butler to the time of his death in 1917.

CALVIN STILLSON/CALVIN S. STILLSON
This entry appears in the 1840 New York census with him living in Canisteo, Steuben County, N.Y. The 1850 census lists Calvin S. Stilson in Canisteo, Steuben County , N .Y .

The following was found in McLean, Elk, Cameron and Potter Counties, PA, History of the Counties, Publisher J .H. Beers & Co., Chicago, 1890, Library of Congress #FI57.M2142:

"L.A. Stilson, P .0. Oswago, was born in Woodhill, Steuban County , New York on May 26, 1836, second of eleven children to Calvin S. and Allie (Huff) Stilson, New York natives, who came to Oswayo, Potter Co., PA in 1853. Farmed with parents. May 12, 1860, married Louisa, daughter of Wm. and Minerva (Clark) Stilson of Oswayo township. Her parents were among the first settlers. Their children: Wm. M. Arlie B; Minnie J .; Walter L; and Freddie J. They purchased the farm where they now reside (in 1865.)"

From records of Donald Stilson of Hilton, N .Y .: Calvin S. Stilson/Calvin Stillson was born in Connecticut 13 Aug 1807 and died in Oswayo twp. , Potter County , PA on 13 Dec 1864. Calvin appears in the 1840 and 1850 Federal Census as having resided in Canisteo, Ny. Y ., Steuben County. The 1850 census lists him with wife Allie (Alice) Huff and 11 children: Samantha b. 1829, Samuel b. 1831, Adaline b. 1833, Laura b. 1834, Leander b. 1836, Rhoda b. 1837, James H. b. 1840, Elieta b. 1841, Martha b. 1845, Margaret b. 1846 and Mary b. 1848. All the children were listed as having been born in New York State, probably in Woodhull, N.Y., Steuben County. The family moved to Oswayo, PA in the early 1850's. The 1860 census for Potter Co., Oswayo twp lists Calvin and wife Alice and daughters Martha, Margaret, Mary and son James. Calvin and Alice are buried in Wells cemetery in Oswayo, Pa.

Samuel R. Stilson (1831-1863) Son of Calvin Stilson, married Susan Eaves about 1855 and they had 3 children, John C. b. 1856, Harriet A. b. 1859 and Theodore H. b. 1860, all born in Pa. Samuel enlisted in the 149th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on 26 August 1862. He was wounded at Gettsyburg and died of his wounds on August 21, 1863 in a Philadelphia hospital. Speculation as to the reason the family is not found in the 1870 or 1880 census is that they probably went to live with Susan's parents in New York state following the death of Samuel... or that Susan remarried and when Theodore was old enough he went to live with his uncle Leander .

Theodore H. Stilson (1860-1938), son of Samuel R. Stilson, married Carrie J. Marvin in 1881 in Canisteo, N. Y .They had four children: Frederick R. b. 1882, Arlie b. 1884, William H. B. 1888 and Ermie A. b. 1890. All born in Canisteo, NY., Steuben County. Carrie J. died in 1906 and is buried in Canisteo, NY. In 1916 Theodore married Ethyl Barber and they had one son, Theodore H. Stilso, Jr. born 3 Oct 1923. Theodore Jr. changed the spelling of his name to Stillson. He died on 6 July 1971 and is buried in Holland, N .Y .Theodore lived for a time with Leander and was very close to his uncle. Theodore's son William stated on Theodores 1839 death certificate that Leander Stilson was his father and the name of his mother was unknown, but Theodore stated upon his second marriage ceertificate to Ethyl Barber in 1916 that his father was Samuel Stilson and his mother was Susan Eaves. The first mention of Theodore's family in the Federal Census for Potter County, PA in the Twp. of Oswayo in 1900. Theodore is buried in Pleasant Valley Cemetery in 0lean, N .Y .

Frederick R. Stilson (1882-1923) son of Theodore, married Hattie Saxton 1901. She died in 1902, the year their daughter Josie Stilson (1902-1969) was born. A Charles Stillson appears in the 1850 New York census living in Oppenheim, Fulton County, New York. No other Stillson names listed for this town.

There are three listings for Charles Stilson in the 1850 New York census: 1) The first living in Nunda, Livingston County, New York. 2) The next is a Charles F. Stilson also living in Nunda, Livingston County, New York 3) The third is a Charles L. Stilson residing in Portage, Livingston County , New York.

There is a Charles M. Stillson reported in the 1850 Ohio census records in Rootstown, Portage County, Ohio. He is aged 27 years, a carpenter with real estate valued at $400. He lives with his wife Lucy aged 24 and their son Wallace aged 1 year. All born in Ohio. Also living in the town are Cyrus Stillson and Philo Stillson. It is not proven, but a speculation that Philo Stillson is the father of both Charles M. and Cyrus Stillson. See Philo Stillson, shown in the genealogy in the fifth generation. He and his wife could easily have had two children born between 1823 and 1825.

It would appear as strong evidence that Charles M. Stilson is the brother of Cyrus Stilson per marriage records in Mahoning County, Ohio (Soundex S342 BOOO) which show Charles M. Stilson's marriage to Lucy Bow on June 1, 1848, the same date that Cyrus W. Stilson wed Lucretia Bow. Two sisters (or perhaps cousins?) apparently married two brothers.

CHARLES H. STILSON
There is also a Charles H. Stillson married to a Frances J. that had a child, name unknown, in Southbury, Twp., New Haven Ct. Eli Stilson (b. 1873) and his family were from Southbury. A connection?
