Continued: Samuel Stilson Stilson on January 13, 1833 in Trumbull, Ohio. Herman is listed in Mahoning County, Ohio, the town of BO___ in the 1850 census. Also living in the town are Samuel O Stilson (Samuel O. Stilson m. Eliza Ann Bow in 1835 in Ohio) and William F. Stilson. Per information provided by Sean McCarty, Herman is listed in several sources. History of Trumbull and Mahoning Counties, H.Z. Williams & Bros., Cleveland 1882, page 83, lists Herman as the son of Peter. In the 1820 census for Ohio he is listed along with Peter, George and Luther. One record, written by Dr. H. S. Thorne and obtained from Boardman Twp., lists Herman's (record as Harmon) wife as Roxy Brainard, sister of John Brainard and daughter of Henry Brainard. They had a son named Orlando who was a shoemaker and the postmaster of Boardman during the Civil War. Apparently Orland and his wife (Eliza Bow) had a son named Benjamin who died in Canada. However, caution must be taken in relying upon these records, since the author admits "Uncle George Brainard at one time kept a record of the burials in Boardman Cemetery, but that record has been lost. So far as it is possible, a new record will be made, but it will be unsatisfatory, as it will of necessity be inaccurate and uncertain and not contain many interments.? As it turns out, the original record was found and , as predicted, Dr Thorne's record is not whooly reliable, although it included information that cannot be compared to that included in "Uncle George's record. Anson Stilson (per records of Sean McCarty) Records of Trumbull, Ohio show a G. Anson Stilson married in Trumbull, Ohio to Louisa Chaffin on February 25, 1813. Source: marriage records. Luther Stilson (per records of Sean McCarty) b. July 18, 1793, Connecticut. Died June 8, 1868 in Youngstown, Mahoning, Ohio. He married Eliza Smeith on June 6, 1816 in Trumbull. A story in the History of Trumbull and Mahoning Counties published in Cleveland by H.Z. Williamd & Bros. 1882 records that during the War of 1812, all the able bodied men of Boardman were drafted in three different drafts. Marriage Certified on fim #317508 of Trumbull County Marriages, 1803-1855, Vol. 1, states Luther and Eliza Smith, both of Boardman, married June 6, 1816. Philip Stilson (per records of Sean McCarty) 3. Eben, (Ebenezer b. at New Milford, November 22, 1761, was a soldier in the Connecticut Line, 1781/2, durnig the Revolutionary War. See Generation V. The births of Anthey, Eben and Eunice are recorded at New Milford. STILSON - FOURTH GENERATION(Vincent 1; Hugh 2; Samuel 3; Jacob 4) IV. JACOB STILSON,born at Newtown, may have been the "child of Samuel, baptized Aprit 7, 1745" (Church Record) although there is no proof of this hypothesis -- he does not fit into any oher contemporaneous Stilson family. He may have been the son of Samuel and his second wife, Eunice Dean, married in 1739, according to Stilson Mss. in the State Library at Hartford, Jacob Stilson is listed int he 1790 census as of Newtown Twp., Fairfield Co., Conn. He died at Newtown, June 20, 1815. He is buried in the Huntingtown Cemetery, Newtown, Ct, and sas of October 30, 1991, his tombstone was still standing, but very weathered and difficult to read. He married at Newtown, November 17, 1768, Lucy Brisco, who perhaps died at Newtown, March 28, 1843, at age 99, (born about 1744.) His estate (Probate #4673) was distributed June 3, 1817, to widow and sons James and Lazarus. According to records of Joye S. Wyatt, the parents of Lucy Brisco were James Brisco b. March 15, 1715 in Milford, New Haven and d. before 1793. His wife was names Hannah. The parents of James Brisco were James Brisco b. 1673 in Milford, CT and d. before 1751 and his wife Elizabeth Adams b. 1678, d. August 22, 1735 i Newtown. The Newtown, Fairfield CT, records, Vol. 1, page 64,film 1435629 written in old script with the following spelling: "Jacob Stillson and Lucy Brisco were joyned together in the mariage covenant on the 17th Day of November AD 1768. Their first born a son named James Brisco bornof Lucy his wife on the 2nd day of October AD 1770. Their son Lazarus b. January the 24 AD 1774." The following is included as references for those researching this line. Land records for CT. show numerous listings for Jacob Stillson. Research by Joye Wyatt shows the following transactions. All of them list character of Deed as War. Jacob Stillson is the grantee in all of the transactions: 1768 - John Johnson. 1786 - S. Baldwin. 1785 - Samuel French. 1786 - Peter Nichols and Abel Johnson. 1787 = John Johnson, Abel Johnson. 1789 - Nathaniel Brisco. 1790 - Abel Tousey. 1792 - John Jacobson and John Johnson. 1793 - Phineahas Taylor, Jabez Peck and Israel. 1794 - George Foot. 1795 - Andrew Griffin. (1790 Census records for Fairfield County, Newtown Town, list a Jacob Stilson with three white males of 16 years and upward including the head of the family and two free white females.) Children: 1. Married and had a chld, who d. July 12, 1817. See Generation V. 3. Sarah Stilson b. 1781? Connecticut?, d. October 18/19, 1842 in Lee County, IA. She m in 1801 to Joel Hough who was b. 1778 in Roxbury, Litchfield, CT, and d. 1843 in Lee County, Iowa. While it was only speculated that Sarah was the daughter of Jacob Stilson, Joye Wyatt reports that this relationship is confirmed in Land records she has researched. She mentions that Jacob and Sarah used the double LL spelling for Stillson. Howard E. Boswell is also searching for the confirmation of a connection between Sarah and Jacob Stilson. He writes " that a researcher of the Hough family, Dr. Franklin Hough, had in his hand-written manuscript the name as Sara Stimson. Although most of his manuscript was correct, a few items were wrong, so this one could be. At present I am still unsure of her maiden name. Since Roxbury and Newtown are not too far distance from one another, it is possible they married there prior to moving to N.Y." He also writes that Sarah Stillson most likely was born before the 1781 or 1790 date that has been previously written in the Hough Genealogy since her first child Russell was born in 1794. It is more likely she married at about 18 years of age or perhaps a bit younger, which would put her birth year between 1776 - 1778. Howard Boswell has submitted the following research: Joel Hough, son of Buel and Elizabeth (Torrance) Hough was born about 1773, probably at Roxbury CT, where his parents are mentioned in the church records in 1775. He married about 1793 in CT to Sarah Stillson. This surname comes from the History of Pottawattamie County, Iowa, in a biography of sonSamuel Milton Hough. Dr. Franklin Hough who wrote three existing copies of "Descendants of William Hough of Connecticut" with his son Elida Crofoot Hough, listed her name as Sarah Stimson. They corresponded with several members of the family then living. Elida finished his work and died in 1885. Descendent Ross Curry writes that Joel andsarah resided in Williamstown and Floyd, N.Y. They joined the Mormons in 1840 and went west where they died in Lee Co., Iowa. Sarah died in 1842 and Joel in 1843. He also provides us with the naems of their nine children. Abigail, Rhoda, Russell, Luman, Mortimer Adelbert, Aliza, Hulda, Samuel Milton, and Joel Riley. some say there wer two more, he adds. He states that Joel was born in Meridan,CT and Sarah was also born in Connectitctu. Their Children were: Children of Abigail and Henry: Harrison and Mary Ellen (Richards) Boswell. Orrie d.
