SALENDA (JACKSON) STILSON

#22. Salenda Jackson Stilson, b. 1834, wife of Edmund Stilson.

Salenda Mary Jackson, b. Feb. 3, 1834, Delaware Co., New York., d. July 20, 1926 Colfax, Whitman Co., Washington and buried Neshonoc Cem. La Crosse Co., West Salem, Wisconsin. Salenda was the daughter of Richard Jackson, a farmer, (May 1799- March 29, 1880) and Florinda (Hayward) Jackson, b. 1802?, d. 1883. Salenda had a brother Lucius. Richard Jackson was the oldest child, he may have had a twin to sister Lucy. Salenda's paternal grandparents were Isiah Jackson (b. 1763 Conn., d. 1829, Delaware Co., N.Y.) who was a tavern-keeper and his wife Amaree (Anna) Baldwin).

Several great grandchildren of Salenda recall their grandmother as a stern woman and that they were all afraid of her. They recall seeing her sitting in a large black rocker, dressed all in black, and never imparting even a smile. She was quite averse to their inappropriate dancing and such carrying on as card playing. She came to live in Diamon and Colfax after Edmund died.
