Early Years

Charles was a precocious child who was full of energy even though he had a Rheumatic heart which limited him as a child.  His father, Carl Ernest Stiehl, was an Engineer whose many patents are still in use and whose enthusiasm and brilliance passed onto Charles.  His mother, Marjory (Simon) Stiehl, was an English teacher with a firm hand who passed onto Charles the love of language, good food, and family customs.  Charles spent much time with his nanny, Beatrice, who spoiled him with love.   Many hours were happily spent as she read to him and tickled his head.

Doctor and Surgeon

Charles knew at an early age that he wanted to become a Physician.  Immediately after graduating from South Milwaukee High School,CharNavy.GIF (31431 bytes) he enlisted in the Navy.  Thanks to the Navy and their educational support, Charles was able to attend Northwestern University Medical School in Illinois.  He excelled in all his classes.

He attended Columbia Hospital in Milwaukee for his Residency requirements and completed his Surgical Residency in Milwaukee at St. Mary's.   He attended full time, taking no time off for vacations, and finished in record time.  He was a fully accredited Physician and Surgeon by age 25.  He continued as a Surgeon for sixteen years in Algoma before relocating to Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

He had many accomplishments as a Doctor and Surgeon in addition to his Private Practice, a few of which are listed below:

Medical Director of M.D. Emergency Service Inc.
Emergency Medical Director, St. Luke's Hospital
Chief of Staff and Chief of Surgery, Algoma Memorial Hospital
Industrial Panel of Blatz Brewery
Industrial Panel of Algoma Net Company
Industrial Panel of U.S. Plywood
Industrial Physician's Panel of Cutler Hammer
Industrial Medical Director of the Heil Company

He was a very caring and precise physician who always did what was best for his patients.  He was a tireless worker who spent countless hours in his practice, in hospitals and on call to ensure that his patients got the best care. His diagnostic skills were remarkable. He never stopped his quest for knowledge until the day he passed away.  He was very proud of being a Physician and tried to excel in everything he did.

Hobbies and Interests

Charles always had a quick and keen mind.  He liked to be active and was constantly coming up with new ideas and inventions.  He had a cherry orchard and decided he needed to do something with all the leftover cherries.  Charles and his father, Carl, put their heads together and came up with a cherry-apple wine formula that tasted sweet and delicious.  From there he created many other wines.

Stiehl54.jpg (438512 bytes)His experience as a doctor came through when he designed and patented a "cast" for his cherry wine bottles to protect the contents from light.  He eventually purchased an old brewery in Algoma, Wisconsin, and turned it into the von Stiehl Winery.  This winery is still in operation today and is now owned by Bill Schmiley and his family.

Charles also used his experience and knowledge as a doctor to write a book about the human condition and how we are all effected by the involuntary coding in our brains.  If you ever wanted to know why some people experience "road rage'  and why others can't seem to stay faithful to their spouses, then this book is for you.  It explains how our ancient coding still controls many of our actions unless we make the necessary decisions to gain control.  This book will be available for purchase at a later time.  It is currently going through the last phase of corrections and will soon be published.

Retirement

Upon retirement to California, he enjoyed watching the Greeen Bay Packers and the PGA Tours on TV.  He was no longer "on call" and was able to enjoy life to its fullest.  He was able to indulge himself and do whatever he chose to do.

Charles loved golf whether he was a participant or an observer.  As a teenager, he considered becoming a Professional Golfer.  But, his father soon put a damper on it when he told Charles he would never make any money.  Not like today, when Pros can make millions on endorsements.

Charles still had the energy and now had the time to turn to his love of gardening and flowers.  His rose bushes are magnificent and a testament to his loving care.  It wasn't above Charles to trim the Green Bay Packers grass for his stepson, Bill Prokop, while Bill was overseas.

His animals also provided much love and comfort.  Hooter and Georgette were evening companions curling up next to him and Jacolynne, his wife whom he nicknamed "My little friend".

Memorial Service

The services took place in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, June 2, 2001 at Bayview Lutheran Church.  Family and friends said their farewells.  His daughter Sarah Stiehl and I, Patricia Dunne, gave brief talks about the special memories we have of Charles.

Many more memories were shared at the grave services which had to be held indoors because of the rain.  Friends and family shared stories of how Charles helped people at his practice, often without charge.

A picture of his headstone will be provided in the near future.
