Aven was born April 8, 1842 in Norway, son of Lewis and Elsa Jonson. He died September 8, 1881 at Knapp, Dunn County, Wisconsin aged 39 years and 5 months and was buried there in Teegarden Cemetery. His gravestone there is inscribed "Aven E. Johnson Born Apr. 8, 1842. Died Sept. 8, 1881. He was a Soldier in the late war in Co. G. 3rd Minn. Inf. and in Co. A 2nd Minn. Cav. He served his country faithfully in her time of peril and now we believe he sleeps in holy blessed sleep."

On December 31, 1857 Aven was united in marriage to Annie E. Jonson at Osceola Mills, Pierce County, Wisconsin, in a Baptist ceremony performed by Reverend Samuel T. Cathin and witnessed by Caroline M. Dureion and Newton M. Deurned. At the time of their marriage Aven was a farmer residing in Taylors Falls, Minnesota. Annie was a daughter of Peter and Catharine Jonson. Their three known children were:

Aven was a Civil War veteran who enlisted October 3, 1861 at Ft. Snelling, Minnesota to serve three years as a Private in Company G of the 3rd Minnesota Infantry. On November 6, 1861 he was mustered into Federal service at the same location. At that time he was listed in the Company Descriptive Book as a 19 year old, 5' 4" tall farmer with light hair, light eyes and a light complexion born in Norway.

On the muster roll of March/April, 1862, Aven was listed as absent in Hospital at Belmont, Furnace, Kentucky. On May 8, 1862 he was given a Disability Discharge at the General Hospital at that location. On that document it was noted that he was incapable of performing the duties of a soldier because of "Tuberculosis of left lung causing general debility."

Aven returned to Minnesota after his discharge where he recovered his health. On November 5, 1863 he enlisted at Pell, Minnesota to serve three years as a Private in Company A of the 2nd Minnesota Cavalry. On December 5, 1863 he was mustered into Federal service with Company A at Ft. Snelling, Minnesota. At that time he was given $25.00 of his $100.00 bounty and was listed as a 21 year old, 5'8 tall farmer with dark hair, blue eyes and a light complexion born in Norway.

On the Muster roll from enlistment to Dec. 31, 1863, Aven was listed as absent on march from Ft. Snelling to Ft. Ridgley, Minnesota, by Special Order No. 392 Hqs. District of Minnesota, Dept, of N.W. On the muster roll of Jan./Feb. 1864 he was noted as present and carried in that capacity through December 1864. On the muster roll of Jan./Feb. 1865 he was listed as absent on provost duty at LeSeur, Minnesota. It was also noted that he was a veteran volunteer, last serving in Company G, 3rd Minnesota Volunteers. Discharged on S.C.D. (Surgeon's Certificate of Disability). Volunteer Bounty of $35.00 2,3&4 instant $150.00, Total due $185.00. On the muster roll of March/April 1865 it was noted that he was absent on provost duty at LeSuer, Minnesota. On the muster roll of May/June 1865 it was noted that he was absent on duty with surveying party. On the muster rolls of July/August and Sep./Oct 1865 it was noted that he was present with Company G. On the muster roll of Nov./Dec 1865 and Jan./Feb 1866 it was noted that he was present and the U.S. was due 52 cents for ordinance.

On April 2, 1866 Aven was mustered out at Ft. Snelling, Minnesota. On the muster out roll it was noted that he was due the remaining $75.00 of his enlistment bounty. His original discharge is in his pension file at the National Archives in Washington, D.C.

On December 11, 1879 Aven E. Johnson filed Application No. 334,061 for an Invalid Veteran's Pension, which was approved under Certificate No. 357,017. On an unknown date Annie E. Johnson filed Application No. 309,478 for a Widow's Pension, which was approved under Certificate No. 232,778. On an unknown date Application No. 362,045 was filed on behalf of Aven's minor children which was approved under Certificate No. 245,998 with their mother, Annie M. Emerson, now remarried, listed as guardian. He died on 3 September 1881 at Knapp, Dunn, WI. Aven died an early death from TB and complications of measles.¹ He was buried after 3 September 1881 at Teegarden Cemetery, Knapp, Dunn, WI.⁹

     Helga THORSTEINSDOTTIR was born on 5 May 1787 at Jorvik, Eydalirbreiddal, Sudurmula, Iceland. She married Erlendur THORDARSON, son of Thorthur HILDIBRANDSSON and Sigridur ERLENSDOTTIR, on 28 December 1805 at Of Iceland.
