Family History Notes
James Stanners and Agnes Eglinton had a son James b.
August 8, 1736 in Bo'Ness. (Who were James' parents?)
James m. Jean Henderson (can't figure out when
exactly) but around 1759-60. James’
birth says Jean is the “lawful”spouse of James Stanners.

Thought this family was interesting just because of
the birth dates. Both James of 1736 and 1769 were mariners. Good form of birth
control for the times.

James and Margaret Cochrane got married in 1860
and had a total of 14 children - 11 born in Scotland and 3 more after they came
to Canada. Of the 4 that died in Scotland only one could really be classed as an
infant death - she was 1 ½. The other children were 2 ½, 6 ½, and the other
was almost 11. I haven't done a lot of research into the deaths yet but that is
coming. This family moved around A LOT. James
was a blacksmith at the foundries then he worked on the CNR in Toronto.
The Scotland children were:

In 1879, James and Margaret along with their
seven children immigrated to Canada. Because
of where they first came to - Ingersoll, Ontario- and the fact that they were said to be starving (Robert’s
son told his kids that he remembered the deplorable conditions of the immigrant
ship like it was yesterday. Robert
would have been a very impressionable 7 year old at the time.) - I believe they
were brought to Canada on a Presbyterian Church sponsorship.
This was done a lot in the 1800s.
James (my gr-grandfather- 19), Alexander - 17 and
John-14, would have been classed as men and probably worked on the ship to help
pay for the passage. James and John
were both blacksmiths the same as their father and Alexander was a
watchmaker/jeweler. After they
arrived in Canada all four of them worked for the CNR.
Margaret had three more children:
Evangelina
Ann 1880 Ingersoll,ON m. Richard Cardiff, Toronto d in
Sask.
Lillian
Elizabeth 1882 Toronto, ON d1883 Toronto
Joseph
Braid
1885 Toronto, ON m. Toronto
d1959 L.A. Ca.
My gr-grandfather moved out to Vancouver in
1892 and worked for the CPR. He
drown in English Bay on July 1, 1898. My
gr-grandmother took the 5 kids back to Toronto where both her family and the
Stanners lived.
Alexander owned a couple of jewelry stores in
downtown Toronto at one time. He apprenticed his brother Robert in the trade of
watchmaker/jeweler. He was also an
optometrist. Alex added the Cochrane name to his but none of the other boys
except Joseph have a middle name. He
stayed in Toronto.
John worked as a blacksmith for the CNR.
His is the only family I have not found a living relative from.
He stayed in Toronto.
Robert moved out to Winnipeg in the early 1920s and
owned a jewelry store there. His
son became an optometrist too.
Margaret and Wilhemina were both dressmakers and when
they got married they moved out to Vancouver. They were the ones that had a stone erected for their brother
James and the baby.
Helen married a printer and moved to Cleveland then
to Pittsburg. Margaret (the mother)
went to live with Helen after James (the father) got run over by a Toronto
Transit Bus in 1922. Margaret lived
to be almost 95 and she died in Pittsburg.
Evangelina (Annie) became a school teacher.
She married Richard Cardiff and they moved to Larcenda, Saskatchewan.
Joseph married in Toronto sometime around 1920 and
had two children before he moved his family to Los Angelos. He died in 1959 but
his name isn’t in the Social Security Death Index. Was he an illegal alien?
I started the genealogy from the front page of the
family bible that an aunt had sent me. Not
knowing anyone in the tree at all except my Grandmother (James 1860 - oldest
daughter) whom I met once.
I found living relatives from every one of the 9 families except for
John’s. So -- if you live in
California and you are one of his descendants contact me.
