Notes for MARY ELIZABETH LAUTH: Two obituaries from a Dteroit newspaper - 1931 LOSS MOURNED IN HOME THAT IGNORES YEARS, At the intersection of St. Antoine St. and E. Adams Ave., there is an old house; a very old house, whose doors bears the number 1945. Once that door bore no number, for the house whose portal it was stood in an open stretch where there were pasture lands and rail fences. That was 86 years ago, when Henry Steinbrecher brought his family from Germany to Detroit and built the house. Late Detroit, grew around the house and the door had to have a number so that ir could be distinguished from other, similar doors. The city crowded close to the house but behind the door the atmosphere of the old farm house remained. Death found that door, took some of the family, but others remained. When the neighborhood began to deteriorate into shacks and shambles, the remainder of the family, two sisters and a brother, grandchildren of the man who built the house, continued to hold the incroaching dissolution of the neighborhood away from that door. Death came again to that door Tuesday and claimed one of the sisters, Miss Elizabeth Lauth, 74 years old. She had been in ill health since she fell last winter. After her body was taken to the William R. Hamilton Funeral Chapel, her brother, George, and her sister, Marie, closed the door that separates a city's too-intimate encroachments from the warm and friendly interior of an old farmhouse. "No one but the family has ever lived in this house," said George Lauth Tuesday evening, "and as long as one of us remains alive, the old home remains as it is." As if to give assent to the sentiment, an old-fashioned on the manter wheezed, creaked and grunted and clanged out the hour as it had done uninterruptedly for generations. DIES IN HOME WHERE SHE LIVED 72 YEARS Death Separates Brother, 2 Sister's First Time. With the death Tuesday night of Miss Elizabeth Lauth 74 years old, a brother and two sisters have been separated for the first time since 1861. In the same house which their grandfather built 86 years ago, at what is now St. Antoine street and Adams avenue east, George, Elizabeth and Mary Lauth have lived since the outbreak of the Civil War. They moved there after their father Hartman Lauth, became the first Detroit man to volunteer for service with the forces of the North. Lauth was killed in the last battle of the war. Miss Lauth's death was attributed to injuries she suffered when she fell in her home Thanksgiving Day. She was born, July 15, 1859, In a home at Groghan, now Monroe avenue, and Hastings street. She often recalled hearing the Detroiters who lived on Woodbridge avenue say they were "going out to visit the house that rich Dutchman built, north of town." Funeral services will be held in that home, 1945 St. Antoine street, at 3:30 pm Friday with burial in Elmwood Cemetery. More About MARY ELIZABETH LAUTH: A. K.
