!JOSIAH FISHER WILSON SANOBRN was the third son and sixth child of Ebenezer and Almyra (Smith) Sanborn, was born 18 May 1826 at Haverhill, New Hampshire. After his mother died in 1828, his father moved to South Pekin, New York, taking all the children except Josiah. He remained in Bath, New Hampshire, with two maiden aunts. According to his daughter, Jessie Coffey, he said he was about 2 years old at the time of his mother's death and was suffering from rickets, so he may have been quite frail. For the treatment of rickets, his aunts would take him in the mornings to the watering trough and dip him in - a rather "cool" bath of spring water! Then they would wrap him in a wool blanket and put him to bed again. No one realized then a vitamin deficiency caused rickets. He rejoined his family in Niagara, New York, in 1831, about a year after his father remarried with Elizabeth Randall. As a young man, he journeyed westward in 1849 to Bavaria, Michigan, located just west of Hillsdale. He was working for the Michiagan Central Railroad. There he met Alberteen Adelaide Eaton, dauthter of Dryer and Emeline (Clark) Eaton of Allen's Prairie (now called Allen), Michigan. They were married 2 May 1851 at Allen's Prairie. Adelaide Sanborn's people had lived near Lake Erie in Ohio before moving to Michigan. She was born 19 Feb. 1835 near Rockport, Ohio. Josiah and Adelaide Sanborn remained in Michigan for another year after their Marriage. Then in 1852 started west again with Adelaide's father and family, going to central Illinois, DeKalb County. (The exact town has not been verified yet; however, according to the obituary notices of Josiah Sanborn and his daughter, Emeline, the town appears to have been DeKalb, same as the county.) They traveled by covered wagon, driving some livestock. In the mornings, milk was placed in a churn; by evening, the milk had been churned to butter which they would use for their supper. The Sanborns did not stay long in Illinois, but continued on westward in the covered wagon and settled northwest of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Cedar Rapids was not much of a town when they arrived on August 31, 1856; a few houses, a mill, and a store. The Indians from Tama reservation came every year and camped close by the Sanborn farm which was located along the Cedar River. The Indians were always peaceable and were good friends with Josiah Sanborn and his family. There was one elderly squaw who had been captured by the Musquakies in the Black Hawk War that had her wickiup near the Sanborn home. Mussak Quttack - Pleasant Summer - by name, and would often come to Adelaide Sanborn and say "Me clean, me take baby?" She was referring to their youngest child, Jessie May Sanborn. (For additional see notes, Jessie May Sanborn.) (The Musquakies were the Fox Indians who lived in Wisconsin. Their neighbors were the Sauks of which the Black Hawk was a member. Black Hawk, hoping to regain his ancestral grounds in Illinois, led several hundred warriors into a few skirmishes which resulted in a wholesale slaughter of his people by the U.S. soldiers in the spring of 1832. These skirmishes which only lasted about 3 months were called the Black Hawk war.) Josiah Sanborn enlisted 12 August 1862 for 3 years in the Civil War as a Union soldier. He was in Company A, 31st Iowa Volunteer Infantry. According to one source, "he participated in all the engagements of his regiment and was with General Sherman's army all through the Atlanta campaign. He was in about twenty engagements, and although never wounded, partically lost his hearing while in the service." However, part of this information has been refuted by his daughter and by his war record. His daughter said served on Lookout Mountain and with Grant's army at the seige of Vicksburg, but was never with Sherman. According to his millitary records, he was absent from his regiment from 14 July 1864 until he was mustered out 27 July 1865 because of an illness contracted in Georgia. So he could not have possibly "participated in all the engagements of his regiment." Josiah Sanborn kept a daily log of his war experiences which resulted in the filling of several diaries which were sent home to his family as they were completed. These diaries were handed down to his daughter Jesse Coffey (Sanborn) and then to Jesse's daughter Mary Wagner. After his discharge and return to Iowa, Josiah became an active and honored member of Dennison Post #244, GAR of Center Point. For several years Josiah was active in the carpenter trade. However in 1878 he abandoned that trade and moved his family to an 80-acre prairie farm northeast of Center Point, Iowa, located in the Grant Township on Section 36, where they farmed for 28 years. The Indians from the Tama Reservation would also stop there as they traveled from the Cedar River to Wapsie River. In the book "Portrait and Biographical Album of Linn County, Iowa", the following was said about Josiah Sanborn: "In early life, Josiah Sanborn learned the carpenter's trade, at which he became very skillful and at which he followed for about 15 years. He is enterprising and energetic, and has succeeded thoroughly in his farming operations. He has a fine homestead and is surrounded by the comforts of life. He is a Republican in politics, and is connected with the Methodist Episcopal Church of which Mrs. Sanborn is also a member in good standing. Mr.Sanborn is the assistant and encourager of very good work and purpose tending to the welfare of his community and is held in high esteem by his townsmen." According to his obituary notice,"...in his later years, he was largely shut into himself, he being very deaf, but his condition led to reading and meditation. He sought to keep himself in touch with the world's progress and to his friends he seemed like a wise prophet of old. In 1906 Josiah and Adelaide Sanborn sold their farm, buying 11 acres near their youngest daughter, Jessie Coffey, near Marion, Iowa. Josiah Sanborn builthis own house on that land and they remained there until his death. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in May 1911. Josiah Sanborn died 20 October 1917, age 91 years, 5 months, 2 days. Adelaide Sanborn lived with her daughter for her remaining years, passing away 14 April 1924, age 89 years, 1 month, 26 days. Both funeral services were held at Prairie Chapel, Marion, Iowa. They are buried side by side in the Prairie Chapel Cemetery. CHILDREN: * i. Emeline Almira Lind Sanborn, b. 5 January 1853 ii. !MARK SANBORN was born 4 March 1750 in Hampton Falls, New Hampshire; died 27 July 1821 in Bath, New Hampshire. He married Ester Cleveland 24 February 1777 [5 Apr 1777] probably near Haverhill, New Hampshire. Ester Cleveland was born 24 July 1754; died 22 November 1796 in Bath. Mark Sanborn moved to Haverhill with his brothers before the Revolutionary War. With the outbreak of the war, he enlisted, serving from 1775 to 1781. He served in Colonel Warner's regimemnt in Jerseys, 1775; in Captain Barron's company for defense or Connecticut River frontier; and was in Colonel Bedel's regiment in April 1778. According to one source, "The danger from the war did not prevent some settlers from coming (to Bath, N.H.) before its close. Mark Sanborn came in 1779, and pitched on the farm now owned by Warren Bass (1855) - his was one of the first settlements in the east part of the town. After the war was over, Mark returned to Bath to farm his land. The first town meeting held in Bath was 26 July 1784. At this meeting, Mark was chosen constable of the town. Other persons chosen for offices included his brother, Capt. Ebenezer Sanborn as a selectman, a highway surveyor, and the pound keeper; and his father-in-law, Elisha Cleveland as the hogs reeve. George was named George Woodworth Nelson Sanford but dropped the Nelson in middle life. Although he was rated as a blacksmith with the Boston Rubber and Shoe Co. Malden Mass. where he worked for many years, they rated him as a genius in his ability to make repairs or to fix almost any part of their equipment. He enjoyed making pocketknives in his spare time and some are still in use among members of the family. He had a blacksmith shop in Berwick but left there about 1895 and went to Malden Mass. He was a member of Harmony Lodge #52 Aylesford, NSF and AM and affiliated with Mt. Vernon Lodge AF and AM in Malden in 1899.

! Ref: The Chute Genealogy states that Jonanthan was born in Cornwallis. This was theTownship (Twp) extending from Scotts Bay to the Cornwallis River and includes Berwick, some 25 miles in extent. His parents may have been near what is now Wolfville in what was originally Horton Twp. He was a farmer and from a statement made by the Rev. Chipman we know he settled in a wilderness and the land was cleared by hard work. He saw tragedy in his life, losing his first two sons when small, and having another son mute. We know that it was only his strong belief in his religion that carried him through such sorrow. He was instrumental in forming the Baptist Church in this wilderness and was a strong supporter all his life. (President) John Sanford Genealogy by Jack Minard Sanford, 1966, page 118, shows b d m and children. His wife and thus their children are desendants not only of Richard Warren but also Elder William Brewster. See notes Melinda (Woodworth).

!There is very little documentation on Samuel's life, but we know he was a farmer and inherited 109 acres of land (Horton-Cornwallis) which he eventually sold to Joseph Newcomb Jr. on the 23 March 1809. It would seem that this might be the time that Samuel removed from Pereau in the extreme NE part of Cornwallis Twp. to the area near Berwick and Sommerset, very near the Aylesford Twp. line. Berwick in 1820 was a wilderness and it is difficult imagining him with a young family hewing his new home out of the forest, somewhat like his brother Benjamin Jr. did in Hants Co. No deeds or will were found, nor was his estate probated. Since Jonathan, Mary, and Amelia all married in Berwick, it is obvious that he must have been in that neigborhood. His sons Jonathan and John also lived on farms in the same area most likey on land deeded to them by their dad. John expressed a desire in his will that "he be buried next to my honoured father" which leads us to believe that Samuel was buried on his own land. John's farm was East of Berwick and indications suggest that Samuel's was west of Berwick close th the North Mountain.

William was born mute. In 1841 when William was 17 there were no institutions in the Province for education of these people. The Rev. Wm. Chipman then Pastor of the Second Cornwallis Church and Rev. Mr. Owens Rector of the Episcopal Parish nearby, both took a deep enterest in the boy and suceeded in sending him to the excellent school in Harford, Conn. In 1846 he returned home bringing with him, his wife Linda. This very happy home was terminated by her death from exploding lamp burns. Wm. later married Emma Jane Lucas, also a mute and had four children, none mute. Dipththeria took away the three girls, leaving them with a son Lorne. Rev. Chipman said nothing could be more touching than to see this silent mother show the schoolbooks, the copy books and the little curls saved, making signs of her grief by pressing her hand over her heart. Wm. loved music and was in absolute ecstacy when he could put his hands on the organ when it was played. They used to walk 18 miles to go to church

!Originally wanted to go into the ministry, following in his father's footsteps. However on account of frail health, he was advised to go into something involving the out-of-doors. Accordingly he became a civil Engineer, and ended up as one of the engineers for the first transcontinental railroad. Despite his frail health, he proved to be the most rugged of all those involved in this enterprise. At the age of 14 he was in Washington and happened to sit in the box next to Lincoln's in the Ford Theater the night of the assassination. He blamed himself for not grabbing Booth's arm to deflect the shot, which he said he could easily have done!

Samuel was called Samuel Jr. He served in the Revolutionary War. He enlisted at Hartford, Connecticut, January 1777 for two years as private in Captain John Barnard's Co., Afterwards he served for over a year in Colonel Samuel Wyllys' Regiment of the Connecticut line. Afterwards he served for over a year as Commandant of a Company of Artificers in General Parson's Brigade. He appled for a pension May 1, 1818, at the age of 64. At that time his wife was already dead, our great-great-great grandmother [of the writer] Anna Sedgwick Curtis was dead, his son Samuel was in Connecticut, but Samel was alone and crippled - unable to carry on his trade of gunsmith and blacksmith. The applcation states: That he continued in said corps about two years. Where he left the soldier's line and was promoted to Commandant of a company of Artificers/Gunsmiths and Blacksmiths/ attached to Gen. Parson's Brigade in said Connecticut line, but the warrant which he received as Commandant of said Artificers is not in his power now to produce; that he continued in said line between one and two years, when in consequence of ill health, he had permission to return home. Said permission did not specify when he should return to the army; and in consequence of ill hearth he did not return and therefore he has no other regular dischage except the one by proclamation at the close of the war; that he was in a skirmish near Burnswick in the state of New Jersey; and in several skirmishes during the war, but in no regular battle; and that he is in reduced circumstances and stands in need of the assistance of his country for support. It further stated that he has no family, that he is very lame, that he has not walked for two years without the use of two canes, and is unable to work. That previous to receiving his pension he was on the town dole. That he was a blacksmith and gunsmith by trade but has been unable to follow his trade for many years.

All Revolutionary War Soldiers who applied for a penison were forced to exaggerate the nature of thier need. However, one can believe that Samuel was indeed unfortnate in that he was lame and certainly could not be a blacksmith in this condition. But is it also sad that the old soldiers had to ask for a penison in such a manner.

His estate consisted of two promissory notes amounting to about (here he could be hedging) 34.00; one canteen $.19; one tomahawk $.50; one scalping knife $.19;. One wonders if the last items were a gentle reminder of his service to the country? They are rather odd items. Where are all his household goods? He mentioned that he sold his tools of his trade.

As a veteran of the war he was allowed a pension under certificate 11,632. The amount of his penison in September of 1819 was $129.30 in arrears and $8 per month.
