Back stamped: "REC'D. SPRINGFIELD,MASS AUG 9, 8 PM 98." Addressed to Frank. M.[cPherson] Coe. (older brother of David Clark Coe), 126 Worthington St., Springfield, Mass. Censored(?) and sewn at left with black cord.]

Santiago de Cuba. July. 27/[18]98

My dear Frank.

It hotter than ______ down here and we are completely melted. Have been before this place now for nearly two weeks, and unless they get us out soon, Uncle Sam will have to send someone to fill our places. Just wait until we get home, and see what comes out, to show how we have been treated. If anyone had told me that the U.S. government would take such poor medical care of her men, I should have called him a liar. I cannot tell you of it now, but it's nothing short of criminal. Many's the poor fellow has cried in vain, for Dr. Clark, and such treatment as he used to always give, and the contrast is great. Don't tell the folks at home, for they will worry needlessly for me, as I am one of a very few. Thank god my strength has thus far inabled me to aid my comrades, who cannot help themselves. It's more than pitiful to see the brave fellows who fought so well and so fearlessly every time we were called on, now groaning with pain and illness for want of proper treatment and medicine. You'll hear from [p.] 2 the old "2nd" when we get back into citizen's clothes again, mark my words, and some of the heads now held so high, will come down where they belong. Please keep this all in confidence, and I can tell you much more of what this Civil War, was not a circumstance. All Hill is not in a battle. Santiago is the largest place we have seen, and certainly is a very quaint and picturesque in the extreme. We are not allowed to go into the city yet, as the Spanish troops-our prisoners-are not yet shipped away. We are able to purchase almost anything now, and they accept American money. Yankee-like they have advanced the price on all produce, clothes, and in fact, any merchandise whatever. The hospitals are fine buildings and are on a hill to our left. It was in on of these that Luit. Hobson, was confined. Directly in front of us is the famous "Toro" or Bull Ring. Back toard the center of the town is an elegant cathedral and on our extreme right, is the famous harbor, which is now completely filled with our transports. The whole place is beautiful in itself and well worth seeing. It is the oldest town in North America. Hope you are well and enjoying yourself, whenever you can. Don't let business worry you, and keep up your [p.] 3 courage. Worry is not good for any one. I think of you constantly and wonder how you are. I hope Edith and "my little boys", are well and happy. Give them all my best wishes and remembrance. Also Mr. + Mrs. Coe. - I have very little chance to write now, and so my friends don't know much about me. I owe about 20 letters, but can't help it. Take good care and keep your health. Think of only 15 men out of 66 being able to answer roll call and you may see how important it is. Some of the boys in our Regt. are actually raving, and keep the others in the hospital awake nights, by their pleadings. One cannot realize the awful part, until he sees it. I am well and as ever Yours sincerely Arthur P.S.-Had a letter from Ted the other day. A.

Pound, Prudence (*1818 - )
Jonathan Padelford, the ancestor of the American Padelfords, was born in England in 1628 and came to the United States and settled in Cambridge, Mass., in 1660. The two forebears of the Padelfords who became a part of the history of Elgin were J. Franklin Padelford who made a name for himself as an outstanding farmer and dairyman in the Almora district and Rodolphus Padelford first city clerk and Daguerrean artist. We will start with the story of J. Franklin Padelford.

J. Franklin was born in Savoy, Berkshire County, Mass., on June 17, 1814, son of Manley and Thankful Padelford. When J. Franklin was 11 years old, his parents moved to Aylmer, Canada, taking their son with them, of course, and the family settled on a farm near Aylmer, where J. Franklin learned to till the soil and care for farm animals. In 1840, when J. Franklin was 26 years old, he married Miss Prudence Pound who was born in Elgin County, Canada, and whom J. Franklin had known as a neighbor in Aylmer for many years.

Within the next four years, J. Franklin's young wife presented him with two little daughters - Amanda Padelford, born in 1842 and Phoebe Padelford, born in 1844. This beginning of a family set J. Franklin to thinking that if he wanted to have a large family, and he did, he should go west where land was cheaper and more fertile and farms could be much larger. So he set out for Illinois because he had heard about the rich soil and the chances to own large tracts of land near the town of Elgin. His family would have to wait until he could build a home for them in Illinois and have a farm that would support them. He found the kind of land he wanted, west of the town of Elgin in a place which is now called Almora and he bought 80 acres. There he built a log cabin and then began planning and planting his farm. In the seasons when he could not work the farm, he got a teaching job which brought in more money to buy more land. it was 1845 before he returned east and settled up his affairs there, packed up their household belongings and brought his wife and two children in an oxen-driven wagon the long trip back to Illinois where the cabin was.

Things were not easy those first years. But Prudence proved to be a courageous pioneer woman. The Indians really pestered her and there were many of them living near the cabin. Prudence said that every time she baked bread, the Pottowatomies whose sense of smell was keen, would come in flocks to get a handout as soon as the bread was taken out of the oven. They also liked cooked meat of chickens and enjoyed running down the biggest and the fattest of the flock. Many were the Indian artifacts the Padelford family collected in those early days and throughout the years.

Old record books tell in glowing terms about the success which Mr. Padelford made in farming. As time went on, he bought more and more land from settlers who did not have the skill he had in making the land yield big crops, and at one time, he owned 300 acres valued at $75 an acre.

By 1883, J. Franklin Padelford had built a beautiful new home for his family on the Big Timber Rd. and it had 12 rooms which were needed, for by that time, 10 children had been born in the family, though two of those had died early in life. All the lumber was hauled from Chicago. The floors downstairs were inlaid with walnut and maple. A buttery as large as some kitchens was an outstanding feature.

An now to answer the question we started with: What became of the Padelfords on this J. Franklin Padelford large family tree? Well, Amanda Padelford married George II Peek, whereupon she and her children became Peeks. Phoebe Padelford married Alonza Chaffee of St. Charles and thus went by the name Chaffee. Malvina Padelford married Alonzo Beverly of Dundee and she and her offspring took the name Beverly. Ida Mae Padelford became Mrs. Albert Gilbert and her children became Gilberts. Jennie Prudence married Robert Kerr and Julia Thankful married Fayette Perry. Of those who lived to full maturity, William Padelford who married Josie Starks is the only one on that family tree to carry on the name Padelford.

But in whatever family those Padelford girls served as wife and mother, they did a fine job in those pioneer days when housewives faced many very trying situations and had to work hard for long hours both in the house and in the fields and gardens. It was their mother, Prudence Pound Padelford, who furnished them with the shining example of heroism it takes to cheerfully leave all that a comfortable home and friends had meant to her in the conservative East and to follow her husband in the harsh and crude wilderness and mold the new place into a loved home for her family.

What Became Of The Padelfords?

Last week, we headed our article with the question: "What became of the Padelfords?" and pointed out that though there seemed to be many people bearing the honored name of Padelford during the middle of the 18th century, Elgin and the district all around it now have no people bearing that name. An examination of the family of ten children reared by the wise and loving parents J. Franklin and his wife, Prudence Pound Padelford, showed us that seven of their children were daughters and that though they all became wonderful mothers and wise loyal wives, they, of course, could not carry on the Padelford name. Two of the three boys in the family died in childhood and the third boy, though he grew to fine manhood, had only one child and that one was a daughter. Women did not used to play as prominent a part in the town's history as they do today. We think Prudence Pound Padelford should have her picture in this paper just as her husband, J. F. Padelford, had his in last week, for she did just as much toward creating and training the family to be fine and valuable citizens as did their father. So here is Prudence, done by a charcoal artist of long ago. And this gives us a chance to add another interesting fact about Prudence which we failed to mention last week: Susie Kenyon, one of Elgin's fine citizens, is the granddaughter of William Pound, the brother of this Prudence Pound we have told you about. Susie has visited the beautiful old farm home near Aylmer, Canada where Prudence grew up.

On 27 Oct 1666 John Pratt signed receipt for Ann's share of her father's estate. The will of John Williams Sr. of Scituate dated 19 Dec 1667, names grandchild Anna wife of John Pratt and says she is John Barker's dau. John Pratt of Kingstown (Kingstowne) in 1671 where on May 20 he took the Oath of Allegiance to the Colonyu and the King. In 1680 John was described in the Oyster Bay, LI records as "lately an inhabitant within ye Coloney of Rhode Island." He was appointed keeper of Hog (now Centre) Island in the Harabor of Oyster Bay. He named his sons Ebenezer, Jeremiah and John Jr. in a deed dated 27 April 1695 in which he mentions wife Ann Pratt. on 14 March 1697/8 he made a further grant to son Ebenezer. On 5 Feb. 1713/4 John Pratt Jr. released to his brothers Ebenezer and Jeremiah his right to certain property "that was formerly my grandfathers Phenius Pratt, situated within ye colony of Boston". This deed recorded in Oyster Bay Town Records established the necessary proof of the identity of John Pratt who was born at Plymouth and moved to Long Island from Rhode Island. On 9 Jan. 1685 the name of John Pratt appears on a list of inhabitants of Oyster Bay. Birth records of the children of John Pratt Sr and Anne are given in the Rhode Island Friends Records.
