!Note: The above sources place this Hannah in the wrong Owen/Owens family (that of Nathaniel, Jr., Benjamin's brother. Nathaniel Jr. and his wife Deborah Parmenter had two daughters named Hannah, both of whom died young, and another daughter named Anna, who also died young. "Owen Source Book", Part 1, by Charles Owen Johnson (1988), p. 19 shows the first Hannah, dau. Nathaniel, died 17 Feb 1721, and Anna died 23 Dec 1728. Sprague (below) shows first Hannah, dau. Nathaniel, b. 13 Nov 1720, d. 17 Feb 1721., second Hannah, also dau. Nathaniel, b. 7 Sep 1723, d. Jan 7, 1724, with a "?" next to death date, and Anna, dau. Nathaniel, b. 28 Oct 1728, d. 23 Dec 1728. 5 of this couple's 9 children d.y., adult records are shown for only 3 (Abigail, Mary, and Deborah).

This is refuted by Sprague (above) and extant Braintree town records, which indicate that that Hannah died about 1724 or so.

!Joseph4 (Joseph3, John2, Samuel1) m. Sarah. -- Packard Genealogy 1952 edition by Charles Wight. PACKARD (MA) Don MacDonald 72360,1636 claire maddox 71570,2512 U.S. Ancestry CIS:ROOT The Genealogy +Sorry I couldn't find the parents to Temperence Packard. The name doesn't appear in any of the Packard or Bruce genealogies at NEHGS. didn't look in their manuscript collection though. The two best sources I found were the vital records of Brookfield to 1850 and the Packard genealogy (1952 edition) by Charles Wight. The following is a tabulation of what is in both of them for Brookfield Packards [brackets indicate the info came from the Packard typescript, and I believe his source was mostly Mitchell's History of Bridgewater]. [ ? Joseph4 (Joseph3, John2, Samuel1) m Sarah.] They had ch. bpt.

!Joseph Packard of Brookfield (CJM Note) : Mitchell, believes Joseph, son of John, rem. to Brookfield, had a son Winslow who went to Dartmouth, but admits confusion between the Josephs of Bridgewater. He attributes the marriage of Sarah Johnson and a set of children to the Joseph who married Mary Willis and was the Son of Samuel 2,1. However Brookfield vital records show the Joseph who removed to Brookfield had wife named Sarah which coincides with family memoirs. He, Joseph, married Sarah in in 1748 at age 23 supported by Bridgwater vital records. Further, Temperance Packard, who is attributed to this Joseph, through family records was married in Brookfield at a date this Joseph was still there--as vital records acknowledge a death of Joseph and Sara's dau.-- Sarah-- when Temperance was married. In the 1890's an Ella Torrey, family relative, recalls personal family knowledge of Sarah, whom she called Elizabeth, and references both her marriage to Joseph and the birth of their dau. Temperance in 1749. We know by the daughter Sarah's death that Joseph ,who was born about 1725 ,would have been about 47 at the date of this dau's birth and 53 at her death. Sarah would have been about age 40 at Sara's birth. We also know, of course, that he was in Brookfield at this time. If he and Sarah m. in 1748 and rem. to Brookfield sometime between 1748 and 1761, the date of his brother John's first child, as Mitchell suggests, this would indicate they had at this time lived in Brookfield for about 20-32 years. It is likely they moved to Brookfield shortly after their marriage, as at least a few of their children would have surely been recorded at Bridgwater, a more sopshisticated and populated area--through vital records. It also seems highly unlikely that Temperance and Winslow were their only two children if she was still having children in 1772. No record exists however, even remotely, for others, other than a recent Packard genealogy of The Packard Family Association which also suggest a Susanna and 3 marriages. Further, there are no family mentions of others born to this family. In fact, Winslow, is never mentioned in family records, only Temperance. Temperance married in the year of sister Sara's birth, as well, and was then 23, (she being born according to other documented sources about 1748/9) If Winslow graduated Dartmouth in 1777, (according to Mitchell) we could suppose he would have been about 21(?) meaning he would have been born about 1756. He (Joseph the fau.?) is again mentioned in 1775 in Brookfield as being one of those called upon to enlist the men (Temple). So at this time he still resided Brookfield and would have been about 50-52 years of age. Although Mitchell says this Joseph died in Easton, Chaffin makes no mention of this Joseph Packard's family that is recognizable, although several others, including Josephs, are present and married and had children in this area. Chaffin, in fact, covers no genealogical data on Packards in his History of Easton, although we know that by other sources and marriage vr's, several were there fairly early on. Brookfield, like many colonies during the early years, was frequently either under Indian attack, participating in the revolutionary war, or subject to the " plague fever", so the families that survived were hardy indeed! By 1790 census there are no Packards listed for Brookfield, MA. Either Joseph is dead by this time, or he has moved to another area. In 1790, he would have been about 65 years of age.

Jonathan Padelford, the ancestor of the American Padelfords, was born in England in 1628 and came to the United States and settled in Cambridge, Mass., in 1660. The two forebears of the Padelfords who became a part of the history of Elgin were J. Franklin Padelford who made a name for himself as an outstanding farmer and dairyman in the Almora district and Rodolphus Padelford first city clerk and Daguerrean artist. We will start with the story of J. Franklin Padelford.

J. Franklin was born in Savoy, Berkshire County, Mass., on June 17, 1814, son of Manley and Thankful Padelford. When J. Franklin was 11 years old, his parents moved to Aylmer, Canada, taking their son with them, of course, and the family settled on a farm near Aylmer, where J. Franklin learned to till the soil and care for farm animals. In 1840, when J. Franklin was 26 years old, he married Miss Prudence Pound who was born in Elgin County, Canada, and whom J. Franklin had known as a neighbor in Aylmer for many years.

Within the next four years, J. Franklin's young wife presented him with two little daughters - Amanda Padelford, born in 1842 and Phoebe Padelford, born in 1844. This beginning of a family set J. Franklin to thinking that if he wanted to have a large family, and he did, he should go west where land was cheaper and more fertile and farms could be much larger. So he set out for Illinois because he had heard about the rich soil and the chances to own large tracts of land near the town of Elgin. His family would have to wait until he could build a home for them in Illinois and have a farm that would support them. He found the kind of land he wanted, west of the town of Elgin in a place which is now called Almora and he bought 80 acres. There he built a log cabin and then began planning and planting his farm. In the seasons when he could not work the farm, he got a teaching job which brought in more money to buy more land. it was 1845 before he returned east and settled up his affairs there, packed up their household belongings and brought his wife and two children in an oxen-driven wagon the long trip back to Illinois where the cabin was.

Things were not easy those first years. But Prudence proved to be a courageous pioneer woman. The Indians really pestered her and there were many of them living near the cabin. Prudence said that every time she baked bread, the Pottowatomies whose sense of smell was keen, would come in flocks to get a handout as soon as the bread was taken out of the oven. They also liked cooked meat of chickens and enjoyed running down the biggest and the fattest of the flock. Many were the Indian artifacts the Padelford family collected in those early days and throughout the years.

Old record books tell in glowing terms about the success which Mr. Padelford made in farming. As time went on, he bought more and more land from settlers who did not have the skill he had in making the land yield big crops, and at one time, he owned 300 acres valued at $75 an acre.

By 1883, J. Franklin Padelford had built a beautiful new home for his family on the Big Timber Rd. and it had 12 rooms which were needed, for by that time, 10 children had been born in the family, though two of those had died early in life. All the lumber was hauled from Chicago. The floors downstairs were inlaid with walnut and maple. A buttery as large as some kitchens was an outstanding feature.

An now to answer the question we started with: What became of the Padelfords on this J. Franklin Padelford large family tree? Well, Amanda Padelford married George II Peek, whereupon she and her children became Peeks. Phoebe Padelford married Alonza Chaffee of St. Charles and thus went by the name Chaffee. Malvina Padelford married Alonzo Beverly of Dundee and she and her offspring took the name Beverly. Ida Mae Padelford became Mrs. Albert Gilbert and her children became Gilberts. Jennie Prudence married Robert Kerr and Julia Thankful married Fayette Perry. Of those who lived to full maturity, William Padelford who married Josie Starks is the only one on that family tree to carry on the name Padelford.

But in whatever family those Padelford girls served as wife and mother, they did a fine job in those pioneer days when housewives faced many very trying situations and had to work hard for long hours both in the house and in the fields and gardens. It was their mother, Prudence Pound Padelford, who furnished them with the shining example of heroism it takes to cheerfully leave all that a comfortable home and friends had meant to her in the conservative East and to follow her husband in the harsh and crude wilderness and mold the new place into a loved home for her family.

Rodolphus (1806-1894)

Today, our story is about Rodolphus W. Padelford and his interesting family. Like his kinsman, J. Franklin Padelford, Rodolphus was born in Savoy, Berkshire County, Mass., and he also was descended from Jonathan Padelford of England and Roger Williams. But where J. Franklin's activities throughout his life are centered around the farm, Rodolphus spent his many years serving the city in its many activities.

Rodolphus Padelford came west and settled in Elgin in 1842. It was about that time when the daguerreotypes had been invented and Rodolphus was the first one to locate a gallery in Elgin. His place of business was located just west of where the railroad tracks now cross Chicago St. Samuel Kimball frequently tells in his diary about Mr. Padelford taking pictures of the family, even taking pictures of one of the family after he had died.

About the same time, Mr. Padelford was elected clerk of Elgin which had just been organized as a city. He held that job for 20 years. He also was appointed clerk of the city court, was elected police magistrate, became clerk of the trustees of the Hospital for the Insane and served as clerk for the Baptist Church and the Baptist Association of Illinois. These last two jobs he held all the rest of his life. They used to say that no one did a more careful job of bookkeeping than did Mr. Padelford. One of the calamities which befell him was that his office caught fire at one time and among the things that were burned were all the records he had so carefully kept of the meetings of the Baptist Church.

Rodolphus Padelford was always a friend of the downtrodden. At one time, he conducted a station on the "underground railroad." Many a colored person owed liberty to Mr. Padelford. It was said of him that he held an open hand and an open heart to all men.

In 1828, Rodolphus Padelford and Mary Wilber had been married and for many years, they lived together in harmony and happiness, appreciating the comfort of their home on the corner of Fulton and Chapel, enjoying their children, their neighbors and their service to the Baptist Church. Then in 1888, Mary died and the lonely Rodolphus went to live with his youngest daughter, Isadore, who had married Eugene Kincaid, publisher of the Elgin Gazette and later manager of the mail service. In 1894, after so many years of faithful service to the city of Elgin, Rodolphus W., 88 years old, died quietly in his daughter's home.

Information about the family of Rodolphus Padelford, reveals much the same situation as we found in the family of J. Franklin Padelford with almost none to carry on the name.

Two Padelford girls had preceded Rodolphus in death--Lavantia who married F.L. McClure in 1848 and lived to bear two sons but one died in infancy. Her husband built the first ice-house in Elgin and for many years, was business manager of the Elgin Packing Company. He died in Phoenix. Abigail Padelford married Edward Adams and they became the parents of John M. Adams who became the leading photographer in early Elgin.

The daughters who were still living at the time of their father's death were his youngest daughter, Isadore, whose husband was Eugene Kincaid, publisher of the Elgin Gazette and later appointed to manage railway mail service. Still later, he was foreman of the mailing department of D.C. Cook Publishing Co. Rodolphus was living at Isadore's home when he died. Nettie A. Padelford never married so she held the Padelford name all her life which was a long one, for she died Jan. 1, 1927, when she was 91.

Jennie Padelford married the lawyer, Edward Joslyn, who won the famous case of the Emma silver mine discovered by the Chisholms. She became the mother of Frank Joslyn, also a successful lawyer.

Matilda C. Padelford married E.K.W. Cornell who was the first dentist to locate in Elgin. Later he became assistant manager and then manager of the Elgin Packing Company. Much of the success of this early company is due to the supervision of Mr. Cornell.

The newspaper obituary for Mr. Padelford named a George W. Padelford of Maywood as a son who survived the father. We find no record of this son and believe it might be a grandson. Anyway, you can see where the name Padelford vanished.

Rodolphus, himself, was always proud of the name Padelford, but only because so many brave and honest and truly fine people had borne it. He often made this statement to his friends and family: "I am truly proud of my family tree, because of the brave and upright people who are on it. How much superior is the lineage which contains such men as Roger Williams and the martyrs who died for freedom than an ancestry containing kings who did nothing to make a better world."
