A brief from special police guard at the Groton Monumen museum to Kathleen Coe Crosby): Compiled by: LLOYD D. WHITMAN, SR. Fort Griswold State Park, Groton Monument-Monument House, Bluff Point, Major John Mason Monument, 57 Fort Street, Groton Conn. 06340: "CORPORAL EDWARD MILLS. Corporal Edward Mills, son of John and Hannah (Starr) Mills, and grandson of Jonathan and Elizabeth (Morgan) Starr was born 1747. Through his mother, Hannah Starr, he was a descendant of Elder William Brewster who came on the Mayflower. December 24, 1772 Edward Mills married Hannah, daughter of Benjamin and Elizabeth Avery at Griswold. Hannah Avery was baptized in the 2nd Church of Preston, April 14, 1754. Edward and Hannah Mills had the following children:
(1) Elizabeth born 1773 mar. Amos Bolles Elizabeth died Dec. 28, 1845 and is buried in a small burial plot on the ground of what is now the Harvard Crew Quarters in Gales Ferry (2) Experience b. about 1775 mar. Jeremiah Smith Sandusky, Ohio. (3) Lucy b. Sept. 1, 1777 mar. Dec. 19, 1798 Giles Dayton at Westfield, New York. Living in Blandford, Mass in 1851 (4) Edward mar. Lucinie Steward at Westfield, N.Y. Had 8 children and moved to Pennsylvania (5) Philip Warner, newborn at the time of the Battle, Sept. 6, 1781 Died from the kick of a horse when five years old.
In Revolutionary Archives Vol. XXVI, we find that "Hannah Mills, widow of Edward Mills, was left with five children under the age of nine years and no estate."
Miss Avery in her paper records the following information which she obtained from Miss Addie Thomas, George O. Miner and C. Allyn: "The wilds of "Gungewamp" also held the home of Corporal Edward Mills... The house stood at the foot of a high ledge, on the Ledyard Town line, quite a distance north of the Belden place. It has for many years been known as the "Brown Farm" and was a portion of the Peter Avery estate, descending from him to the Miner brothers. The house fallen to ruins only a few years ago, was a low, one-story structure, facing the south with a large stone chimney and three fireplaces. One front room and a small entry about six feet square, from which rose the only flight of stairs. There were three rooms on the back, including one made by the low sloping roof, in which room was made another door facing the south. Three cart paths or lanes led from the house to the outer world, east, south and west, the latter path coming out near M. Clarance Latham's place, the second at the grist mill, and the first crossing Great Brook over which a large log had been placed, with a hand rail for people on foot to use while horses forded the stream. This path led through the woods until it came out near Captain Peter Avery's this side of Center Groton. The path to the grist mill and thence out onto the old Post road was probably the one which Ann Warner traveled four times that anxious night after the battle, on her errand of mercy, twice carrying the new born babe in her strong, kind arms, for the comfort of the sorrowing aunt and mortally wounded uncle . . . ."
Hannah (Avery) Mills, widow of Edward, married second Thomas Smith about 1785 and moved to Montgomery, Mass., then to Blandford, Mass. About 1789 they came back to Connecticut and lived in Norwich for seven years and then moved on again to Westfield, New York. Most of the information about the descendants of Edward Mills was found in a letter of his daughter, Lucy Dayton, which is found in the Probate Records of Groton Volume II page 71-72. This letter established her claim to be an heir of Anna (Warner) Bailey and she received her share of the estate. A copy of the letter is included for it contains many interesting notes. [This letter is missing.]
