!Source: Baptismal Register of St. James Church, Charlottetown, P.E.I., show Ed. L. Lydiard and Lydia Morton to be man and wife. Copy of record in Robert Edward Lydiard's file. Included in letter from the Public Archives, P.E.I. dated 6 Sep 89. !Dates of birth, death etc. from History of Lydiard Family, chart on p.58. Sanford Genealogy p. 182. Associated with Thomas and Samuel in the Brewery In Halifax. When this business was sold he moved to Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island around 1840. While still a young man he became Secretary and Treasurer of a Charlottetown bank. This bank failed around 1845, and although not legally obligated to do so, Edward spent his entire fortune, estimated tobe around $250,000, ($2,500,000 now) to pay off the banks depositors. There is nothing in the records to indicate that his fellow directors or bank officers followed his example. Some still remember Edward's honesty and think well of him for it 135 years after the deed. Following this ill-starred venture in banking he became involved with shipping and the sea in various capacities. He is mentioned as the hero in a long poem printed in Charlottetown in 1853 to commemorate a marine tragedy, sinking of the "Fairy Queen" on October 7th which occurred in the Northumberland Straits between PEI and NS. In essence the ship broke down in heavy seas and at 11 PM the captain "Bulzee" and most of the crew took to the boats and left the passengers to perish. "The Crew and Captain reach the shore, Ashore and safe? no ! still they fear, For Lydiard's threat rings in the ear; "If Providence my life shall spare- And such a trust e'en here I dare, You'll rue your baseness by-and-by"; Some passengers survived and the capain and crew were arrested. And as the long poem says "The tempest, in their bosom, still'd! And Lydiard's prophecy fulfill'd." Around 1855 Edward became Port Collector at Charlottetown, a position similar to Chief Customs Officer today. In 1866 Edward retired and moved to Boston where he died 1892 of a stroke

! George Edward Lydiard, was born in Halifax NS (shown on first marriage certificate # 109,) but moved with parents as a child to PEI. His mother was a daughter of the late Hon. John Morton, of the Legislative Council of Nova Scotia. In his early days George was employed in the book store of his uncle, Major G. E. Morton, of Halifax. He learned telegaphy, possibly influenced by his grandfather, the Honourable John Morton, M. L. C., who owned The Cornwallis Bridge and Electric Telegraph Companies. When a mere youth came to Berwick to take charge of the first telegraph office in the village and also became station agent of the newly formed Windsor + Annapolis Railway. Station Agent Berwick and later Cornwallis. He resigned this position for 15 years to take care of his aunt's farm in Centreville. His aunt was Isabella Alice (Morton) b 9 May 1813, m 19 Sept 1839 Rev. William Thomas Wishart, b 9 June 1809 in Scotland. After her death he returned as Station Agent where he remained until 1898-9 when he went into the poultry business. His gravestone, lot 22, on East Maine St., in the Berwick, Nova Scotia cemetery reads: In Loving Memory - of - George E. Lydiard -died - May 26, 1905 - Aged 62 years. father: Lydiard, Edward Langley(1811 - 1892)

!He and some of his siblings were raised by his uncle Lemuel Morton, a Halifax book-store owner and Lydia's brother. The Mortons could well afford such charity, being quite successful from farming, chiefly as apple orchardists, and were also large landowners in and around Halifax. Henry inherited the bulk of Lemuel Morton estate in his mid 20's. Spent life breeding and racing trotters, including "Border". He used to take his sulky, horse and a bag of feed and head down to races in the states. Arriving all covered in dust, he would enter the race and many would wonder what the "old hayseed" was doing there. After the race they knew, he usually own. Henry died on Labour Day in Aylesford at the age of 78, doing what he like best racing his trotter "Briar Mac". Except from newspaper; "When Lydiard suddenly threw up his hands and fell to the fround, Briar Mac had just passed Torpedo Lady, hesitating only for a fraction of a second, the horse swept on in a beautiful stride. John MacGregor was ahead of Briar Mac, but the latter, with reins dragging, pulled up along side and passed him, then levelled away for the lead horse, Aubrey the Great, while the spectators watched with awe. It seems that this horse was being driven by invisible hands. Aubrey the Great passed under the wire a length ahead of Briar Mac". the track in mid-race, horse came second.

Moved to Australia in 1870. The main street in Ballarat was named Lydiard Street which is about 500 miles southwest of Sydney. Or it may have been the by-product of the New Zealand Lydiards. May have returned to Chicago 1918-1920 as John M. Lydiard have vague recollections of meeting "Uncle Willy" about this time.
