Danny Joe Seabaugh’s first pride was family.

“He was there to support anyone in life, but he was always there for family,” said his oldest son, Steven Seabaugh. “Friends became a part of the family. The house was always open to anyone.”

Mr. Seabaugh died at Boone Hospital Center on Thursday, May 26, 2005. He was 70.

He was born Feb. 26, 1935, in Patton to Autie and Flossie Limbaugh Seabaugh. He married Gloria Wray on Oct. 8, 1960, in St. Louis.

Mr. Seabaugh graduated from Patton High School and served for four years in the U.S. Air Force as an aircraft mechanic.

Steven Seabaugh recalled a time when all of Mr. Seabaugh’s children asked their dad whether he was ever scared while in the Air Force. He responded by saying, “No, just the first night,” and began to laugh.

After his discharge, Mr. Seabaugh moved back to his parents’ farm, where he spent his wages on a new refrigerator for his mother, said his son John Seabaugh.

“We always came first,” said his daughter, Joyce Foutz. “He was very selfless and giving of his time.”

Mr. Seabaugh and his family moved frequently, but adjusting to people was commonplace, and he could talk to anybody, Steven Seabaugh said.

Later, Mr. Seabaugh worked for McDonnell Douglas in St. Louis. He then managed several Firestone tire outlets, owned and managed a gas station and served as a district sales manager for Kerr-McGee Corp., where he spent 12 years. After he moved to Columbia in 1976, Mr. Seabaugh worked for Plaza Real Estate for 20 years.

“He could sell an ice cube to an Eskimo,” Steven Seabaugh said.

Mr. Seabaugh was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Illinois, where he served as a deacon and trustee. After the move to Columbia, he and his family regularly attended Woodcrest Chapel. He was also a Freemason for 36 years.

Mr. Seabaugh rarely missed his grandchildren’s basketball and soccer games. He was proud of them and loved to be a part of their activities, even when his health started to get in the way, Steven Seabaugh said.

“He was a very honest and outgoing person; he touched a lot of people’s lives that he met,” his son Scott Seabaugh said.

A St. Louis Cardinals fan and avid follower of MU football and basketball, Mr. Seabaugh bought season tickets to MU basketball games.

Gloria Seabaugh has Alzheimer’s disease. Mr. Seabaugh took care of her as long as he could.

“Dad was very devoted to Mom,” Foutz said. “He was very concerned about her welfare, and it broke his heart to see her fail in that way.”

He is survived by his wife; three sons, Steven Craig Seabaugh, Scott Wray Seabaugh, and John Michael Seabaugh, all of Columbia; one daughter, Joyce Marie Foutz of Blue Springs; one brother, Cecil Louis of St. Louis; and 11 grandchildren.

Two brothers, Woodrow Seabaugh and John Quinten Seabaugh, and two sisters, Maxine Schade and Betty Phillips, died earlier.

Services, conducted by the Rev. Rod Casey, will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Woodcrest Chapel, 2201 W. Nifong Blvd.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association’s Mid-Missouri Chapter, 1121 Business Loop 70 E., Columbia, MO, 65201, or Eldercare Center, 137 Clark Hall, Columbia, MO 65211.
