Dearest STATLER Cousins, I've been at the infamous "brick wall" with
my STATLER ancestors for some time now. I've only been able to get as far as my
ggGrandfather, Frank STATLER, b. 1852 in OH, and his wife Ella COLLINS STATLER.
I checking out other STATLER lines that would have been born before him and see
if one might lead me directly to him...
John STATLER b 1772 had a son Charles Augustus STATLER b. 1827 md Catherine AKE
Jan 1852. Catherine AKE daughter of John AKE of Frederick Co MD. There are no
children listed for them but, my ggGrandfather, Frank STATLER, was born "July 1852"!!! Could he be their
son? He could have been born two months premature, or Catherine could have been "with child" two months prior
to their marriage in January 1852. (Hey! It happened! *lol*)
I
have Mary AKE md Peter PUTTERBAUGH Frederick Co MD so I know I'm related to
this STATLER line, but not as directly through them, as I would like to be. I want
to find that solid STATLER-to-STATLER connection.
Here's how my AKE-to-STATLER line comes out:
1 Peter PUTTERBAUGH, b. 1765, Frederick Co. MD

2 John Ake PUTTERBAUGH, b. 15 May 1994, Huntingdon Co., PA

5 Florence Marie REINHEIMER b. 11 Feb ????
+ Clyde
Franklin STATLER b 4 Sep1882 Oskaloosa Mahaska Co IA
(Clyde's father was Frank STATLER, b Jul 1852 mother, Ella COLLINS.)
Then my grandfather, Eugene Clayton STATLER and my father, Eugene Clayton
STATLER, Jr., and myself. AKE came down through Clyde STATLER's Maternal line.
But, because of the coincidence that Frank STATLER was born the very same year
that Charles Augustus and Catherine were married, I have a feeling he just
might be their son. I've been searching nearly 25 years!>Waiting

their residence in 1790. I have not yet been able to connect any of those

chromosome testing could answer some of the questions such as:
Do the Stotler's of Morgan County West Virginia share a common ancestor with
Casper Statler of Somerset County PA. Do the Statler's in
Do the Stadler families who came from
Do the Stateler families share a common ancestor with Casper Statler or any of
the Stetler or Stotler Families?
Y chromosome testing provides only information about an unbroken male line, a
man, his father, grandfather and on back so it is very suited for surname
studies. No health information is obtained by the test. The test is usually
made by collecting cells from the inside of the cheek with a small brush. I am
very concerned with privacy issues and would do to meet any privacy issues.
Unless a person is willing I will not share their name with anyone else. Of
course I need to share the name of the ancestor. Please write if you have
questions and know of someone who would be interested in taking the test. Sandy

Thanks for your e-mail! The discrepant stories about Statlers were what inspired me to straighten them
out. Stephen, born abt 1720?, probably somewhere in Germany or Switzerland, + in Fayette Co, PA, 1783 (or 84; I'm writing this without any notes); the only record, late, of his wife calls her Susanna but it's not known if he had one wife or two. There is a gap in his children's ages that always suggested to me he might have been married twice.
Fr Sandra Hall- Stephen Sr., not leaving even a crumb to the orphans of his son, Jacob, makes me wonder if they were brothers instead of father and son. The fact that one of Jacob's sons referred to his "grandfather Stephen" could then still be true if Stephen Sr's father was also a Stephen. In fact, Toothman mentions an estate proceeding in Hardy (?) Co. Va., c1765 of a "Step. Statler". He does not elaborate on it - so I don't know if there is any more documentation that just the mention of the case.

Fr Bob McGill- The Nethertons and Toothman both postulate that John Stateler, Sr. had 3 sons: John, Jr., Jacob and Joseph. The descendants of John,Jr. are the 8 children listed in Licking Co. Chancery records: Stephen,David,Jacob,Martin,Mary Ann,Malinda,Margaret, and Sarah (Vol P, 1841-44,Licking Co,Ohio, p379 and Vol T, p75-81). No Joseph. The second son of John Sr and Eve Stateler, Jacob, appearently died c1800 as there was an attachment against his estate naming garnishees as Andrew Myers, Hannah Stateler(wife ?), and John and Eve Stateler (parents). As he died before 1811, he cannot be the father of our Joseph. This leaves the third son,Joseph,as the only descendant of John,Sr. who might be OUR Joseph's father. My strongest supposition is that he is a grandson of John Stateler, Sr.(1733-1826) by an unk son.

2nd child of Stephen
2. CATHERINE STATLER, b 1735, daughter of Stephen. The will refers to daughter Catherine, to share in personally, as well as daughter Catherine Highly, elsewhere bequeathed five shillings. I take them to be the same person. She has not been positively identified, but it would appear that she was the wife of George Hiley of Monongalia. In 1758, George Hiley was fined for missing a private muster in Captain Thomas Speak's company, Frederick Co., VA. (18) Stephen Statler was paid for service in the same company. George Hiley claimed 400 acres on Dunkard Creek, by virtue of a 1770 improvement, and adjoining the 1772 claim of Rudolph Hiley. (19) Rudolph was in service under Captain Zackquill Morgan in 1774, along with John Statler. (20) George Hiley was one of the bondsmen for Mrs. Jacob Statler, administratrix of her husband's estate. John Stateler, the heir of Jacob, described Hiley as having "by his Suretyship and by other means an influence in the family", and further indicates that Hiley acted as his guardian, without appointment, and converted to his own use a portion of the land that was rightfully Stateler's inheritance. George Hiley died sometime between 1788-1790, when Charles Martin made a note payable to Catherine and Abraham Hiley, his administrators (22) Catherine was the widow of George Hiley and retained dower interest in his real estate, title to which had passed by purchase to Adam Brown, son-in-law of John Statler (23) In a lawsuit, Brown states that Catherine Hiley sold her dower to John Bills, who had sold it to Brown; that the purchase called for an annuity of $10 per year, payable to Catherine Hiley and for which John Dent was receiver; "whether sd Chatharine [sic] is dead or alive this Respd knoweth not." It would appear that Catherine Statler, dau of Stephen, was wife of George Hiley (d. c1788/90) and that the "other means" by which George gained and influence in the affairs of John Stateler son of Jacob was his in-law relationship.
Hiley appears to have had eight children.
(24) Whether Catherine Statler was his only wife is undetermined, but some of the following persons are perhaps descendants of Stephen Statler (died c1784).
i. Abraham Hiley, born c1757 in
ii. Mary Hiley, married James Levingstone. (26)

(22) Catherine and Abraham Highly vs Charles Martin's Executors, Monongalia Court Records env 128.
(23) Susannah Hiley and William McCormack vs Adam Brown, Monongalia Court Records env. 211. Susannah was apparently the widow of John Hiley, who died c1806 and who appears to have been a son of George, although relationships are not explicitly stated in the file. She later married McCormack.
(24) Deeds relating to George Hiley's 273-acre tract as it surveyed out indicate that he was survived by eight children, as the shares work out to approximately 43 acres each. Not all the deeds survive however. Manus Brown, the father of Adam, seems to have purchased 205 acres of the tract, which was conveyed to Adam Brown by other sons of Manus in 1799. WENDEL BROWN 2 (1983):232-233. One of these was the share of Christina Hiley Eichelberger, it would appear.
(25) Monongalia Deeds, OS 2:388. Abraham and Mary Hiley, Breckinridge Co., KY to Adam Brown, conveying interest in George Hiley real estate. Hiley is also identified as George's son in Statler vs Core and Hiley. His age cited from Revolutionary pension application in A&M 501, Marian Tapp collection, WVU Library, "Hiley" folder. I have not seen his pension file. Numerous references to this man in abstracted records of BRECKINRIDGE C0. KY GENEALOGIST.
(26) Monongalia Deeds OS 2:388. James and Mary Levingston et al to David Piles, n.d., 1801, conveying 68.25 acres formerly belonging to George Hiley.
(27) Ibid., Uz (signed Hezekiah) and Catherine Marshall et al to David Piles, n.d., 1801, conveying 68.25 acres. Only Hezekiah Marshall signs the conveyance.
(28) Hiley and McCormack vs Adam Brown, loc. cit. MCR env 84-a, Sarah Boyles vs Susannah Hiley, indicates Susannah was daughter of John Downer, who had fraudulently entered a number of surveys in his daughter's name. Brown's response in Hiley and McCormack vs Brown states that Susannah was the wife of John Hiley, whom Brown now believes to be dead. The bill is ambiguous regarding her marital history.

Ekelberger to Manus Brown, the deed no longer of record in Monongalia. Cf

Many people are confused about this family. The only Statler/Stateler family in Monog. County after 1830 is that of John who is the son of Jacob killed 1778. "according to tradition, the body of Jacob Statler who was killed on this occasion was buried near the state line. A few years ago his bones were exposed, caused by erosion in the soil. The citizens living in this neighborhood had them recoffined and re-interred with honors of war in the presence of a large assemblage of patriots who marched to the tunes of martial music, with flags flying, in all the pomp and glory suitable for such occasion."

Jacob Not named in the will of Stephen Statler, but a lawsuit prosecuted by Jacob's son John stated that he was a grandson of Stephen Stadler and heir identifies Stephen as plaintiff's grandfather. Jacob's wife is unknown. It appears that she died relatively early, perhaps by 1784 but certainly while her son John was still a minor. (30)
Statler's estate was administered by his widow, whose bondsmen were George Hiley and John Celcir (32)
No records of the administration survived the 1796 fire.
Jacob, son of Stephen, was killed by Indians. He is not

name is not given anywhere

Except for John (son of Jacob), nearly all the rest of the family left WV pretty early. The lawsuit had to do with the land to which John was entitled as the heir at law of his father. He recites that his father was killed by Indians "many years ago" and that George HILEY, who he stops just short of saying was his uncle though it is strongly implied that HILEY was a family connection, had a survey made for John as heir of Jacob but appropriated part of the land to his own use and he or his heir sold it to one of the CORE men. George SNYDER was finally bonded as guardian to John STATLER and obtained another survey, which included all of the land to which John was entitled, and the purpose of the suit was to negate HILEY's sale to CORE of a part of it. Eventually STATLER and CORE agreed the case out of court and STATLER took the land, 400 acres in all. This is the same John whose dates are usually given as 1733-1826 (or so), but the dates are wrong. He says that he was a minor at the time of his father's death in 1778 and for many years afterward, and there is no reason to doubt this. He would have been laughed out of court if he came in, aged almost 70, and presented the case that he did. He was actually born c1772, it would appear, and was age 21 by 1794 -- but probably not much over 21 at that time. I've seen a photograph of his tombstone, which appears to show he + 1826, age 93 years but the first digit of the age is badly damaged, as if it has been chipped with a sharp object, and I believe it should read _53_years. If I remember correctly, the
stone shows him +1826 but his estate went into probate in 1825, so the date of death is probably a year off. MITTONG says he married Eve ROBERTS, but that is also wrong. MITTONG badly confused the STATLER family and he has been followed closely by CORE and others -- another purpose for my article! Evidently Mr WILSON saw deeds from John and Eve (BRYERLY) STATLER in Monongalia and presumed that all references to a John were to the same person, which they are not. The John who married Eve was the older man, and made a mark like a $ tipped over on its side. John STATLER the son of Jacob wrote his name and had a very distinctive handwriting, as well as spelling style, that are easy to spot if you've seen them once. The older John had land at Pentress and Blacksville, adjoining George HILEY's home place. At least some of this came eventually to Adam BROWN.The MS indicates that there were sisters but does not ID them, and they didn't figure in any of the litigation over the land because John, as
the oldest son, was the heir at law to his father's real estate. (The MS says that Joseph was the oldest son, but this is contradicted by the facts. The only one who is known to me to have stayed here was Christina STATLER, the daughter of John and Eve (BRYERLY), who married Adam BROWN and lived at Pentress. Her parentage has been much disputed in the past but I was lucky enough to find the documents which prove that she was the daughter of John (who signs by the tipped-over $ mark). John gave evidence, shortly before returning to OH, in a lawsuit involving Christina's son John BROWN and stated his relationship there, as well s signing with his usual mark. Again, I would recommend to you my STATLER article, which does not include the info about Joseph, brother of John (of Jacob), noted above, because this came to me after the last completed draft was finished. It doesn't go beyond the children of John (c1772-1825/6), and there is still some discrepancy as to the # of Michaels around (I think there are 2: an older one who
was son of Stephen and a younger who may well have been a son of Jacob, but I could be wrong on this and the local records just don't give the answer). Otherwise, there is nothing in it that I know to be wrong, though it needs fine-tuning. The previous sources on this family were some fairly brief mentions in WILEY, which are partly incorrect; the page or two in WILSON's book on the MITTONG family, which is rather garbled; some notes not directly relevant to STATLER but involving them in Glenn LOUGH's book; and CORE, who uses all of the preceding. I'm not even related to this family! Twenty years ago Susie JONES mentioned them to me as a family who were a major mess to untangle, and eventually I set about to see what could actually be done with them, just as a project. I had had some correspondence from the BROWN researchers, for whom I found the BROWN-STATLER connection above, and one of them tipped me to the torn-out Bible record of John STATLER's children. And then a book I randomly picked up at WVU Library had the clues I needed to find the "other" children of Stephen Sr, who went to KY

According to the 1938 family history taken from material collected by Edwin Stotler the children of Joseph's first marriage were:
-Alexander born
-James Stotler, second son of Joseph Stotler, moved from
-John Stotler went to
-Elizabeth Stotler went with James to

That makes 6 more children. I know Joseph's first wife was named Margaret and since there first son was Alaexander Miller Stotler her name might well have been Miller.

ED. NOTE; Eva sent me some information from
the History of Marion County in relating some stories of the
relationship of some of the early stettlers with the Indians.
"Capt. Beckley relates the following occurrence as given by Benjamin Sharrock, now well advanced in years, and formerly a citizen of Marion County:
'About the year 1821 or 1822, there were several Indians who frequently camped and hunted on the waters of the West and Middle Forks of the Whetstone, to wit: Capt. Dowdee, his son Tom, and Capt. Dowdee's son-in-law, Nickels (the bad Indian), the subject of this narrative. He was regarded as a dangerous man among his own companions. He had become embittered against Benjamin Sharrock, his brother, Everard Sharrock, and Jacob Stateler, who with his three sons, Andrew, James and John (the latter were twin brothers), lived in a cabin on or near the land now owned by George Diegle, Esq., in Tully Township. The Dowdees had frequently shared the hospitalities of our cabin and we regarded them and peacable and well disposed citizens.'
The article goes on to relate some incidents with the Indian Nickels which the Sharrocks and Statelers survived.

From: Mcgillrb@aol.com
-I believe I have found Michael Stateler on the 1820
Twp. He is erroneously listed as "Michael Shadley". There is no "Michael Shadley" in Licking Co., records or other
censii. Once again, the Stateler name has been "butchered" and mis-transcribed. The listing is :
1820 Census Shadley, Michael
600011-02110
The enumeration lends itself to the following analysis:
The 6 males under 10:
1.Michael Jr. (b1810) son of Michael
2.Joseph (1811) son of Joseph (son of Michael in all subsequent references)
3.Stephen (1813) son of Michael
4.Elijah (1817) son of Michael
5.James W.D. (1818) son of Michael
6.Samuel D. (1819/20) son of Joseph
The male 26/45 : Joseph c30-35 - son of Michael
The male over 45: Michael - c58-63
The 2 females 10/16:
1.Lovina (1807) - dau of Michael (She m. Wm. Neibarger)
2.Mary (1809) - dau of Joseph (She m. Benj. Stump)
The female 16/26: Unk. wife of Joseph - c26
The female 26/45: Mary Dunlap - wife of Michael - c35
I concede that this is an imperfect analysis - most censii prior to 1850 are largely taken on faith or as logic
assumptions. This one is no different. There are particular difficulties with the females listed. i.e. Joseph's
wife is too young to have married daughters (who would not be shown here, but with their husbands). Is she
a second wife ? Also, where is George ? In my present analysis I omit Lucinda, Eliza, and the younger Michael
who marries in 1840. Perhaps they do belong to George, after all ? They are never referred to in our Joseph's
family stories as "brother and sisters " of his, while the others are.
I'm still looking for a clue that will place them correctly.
To return to my original assumption that this is our Michael: it's the right year, the right county. the right
township, right first name (Michael), and right age groupings

All your points are well taken. I will check subsequent censii for the ages of those who got married. Wouldn't it be
wonderful if one of them turned out to be of an age to have been Joseph's (1811-1870) widowed mother.
You are right about Michael not being on the 1820 census of Licking Co.I feel certain he was there then as he appears
on 1816 and
1826 tax lists and on 1818 and 1825 deeds; both of which bracket 1820. The
History of
This brings up the whole matter of the thoroughness of censii. As neither George nor Joseph ever appear on one in
Licking Co., I can image either a very sloppy census-taker, or , whenever he interviews Michael, that Michael
responds to him "Oh, those two houses back there are my two sons" and the census-taker immediately assumes they
are in the family numbers he has just gotten from Michael. Who knows why they were so consistently missed ? (if
they were in
hills to avoid the "revenuers" and deliberately sought to avoid being listed). Moonshiners? Again, you are right to raise
the question of whether or not every Stateler "cat" in Licking Co. is known. Obviously, we are forced to draw our
conclusions from only what we do know (0r can reasonably surmise). It is , indeed, highly likely that other Statelers
may have passed thru Licking Co. at various times. However, we have no inkling that any of them lingered long
enough to get their names on deeds or raise a family of at least 5 children and possibly 8. Poor as it is, the
"documentation" that we do have is all we have to go on as to names.
For the record: Joseph Stateler is listed on the muster roll of Capt. John Spencer's Company (Licking Co., RBM) from
are the only
service as a "Spy", also under Capt. John Spencer. This Spencer fellow also goes all the way back to the 1806 Tax list
of Fairfield Co., where he appears on the same list as John Sr., John Jr., and Michael Shadler (sic).
1.I definitely
agree that the Joseph Stateler who marries Sarah Galbreath in Butler Co.,
of Joseph (1811-1870); the marriage is not only 4-yrs late but in the wrong county. Our Joseph Stateler's tombstone
contains the
words "Born in Licking Co
will make another "leap of faith" and presume his parents were present on that occasion. (GRIN).
2.The elder Joseph of Licking Co., served in Capt. John Spencer's company at 4 different times during the War of
1812. This is confirmed by the fact several of the other names on the company roster are well-known Licking Co.
names. This does not rule out that other "Joseph Stat(e)ler's" may also have served in that war; in fact, Jacob Stateler's
son, Joseph of
Monongalia Co.,
3.For the period 1808-1825, in Licking Co. there is no documentation of any adult male Statelers other than John
Sr.,John Jr., Michael, George and Joseph.
(The exception
being Jacob, who married Catherine Sap
Jr.). There just aren't any other "cats" in the room. Are there ?
4.I postulate Lucinda, Eliza, and Michael as siblings of Joseph (1811-1870) on the basis of "process of elimination".
i.e. They had to have parents - and only 2 "cats" are left: George and Joseph. George, without a wife's dower release
on his deed , sells out in 1825, and can be presumed to have left the county prior to Eliza's marriage in 1828 and
certainly before Michael's in 1840. Leaving unmarried children, especially a daughter, doesn't seem to make much
sense for a "family". Hence, I ruled out George.
I concede that I am hypothesizing as to the exact number of siblings Joseph (1811-1870) may have had, but after one
subtracts all the known Statelers who married in Licking Co.,we are left with a reasonable number (for a Family) and
no duplicate names, all in the right age range, Mere coincidence? Also, I cannot envision outside Statelers flocking to
Licking Co. just to get married - they must have originated there !

their home after her mother's death. See also George Statler vs John Troy and

(16) Delinquent tax lists, MCR env 44. Monongalia Land Books carry George Statler as a property owner from 1796-1810, inclusive. However, cf Monongalia Surveys, 7:120, a 1785 survey for George Statler, heir of Stephen, 180 acres on Dunkard Creek, with Monongalia Deeds OS 3:4, Adam and Christina Shriver to Abraham Shriver, 10 March 1803. One call is missed, and there is a discrepancy in one line (215 poles with the meanders of Dunkard Creek in the survey, 311 poles with the meanders in the deed), but the land conveyed by the Shrivers appears to be the same tract formerly owned by George Statler. There is no conveyance by Statler, and none to Shriver, no is there a survey for Shriver, whose deed gives no provenance of title or tract history. Witnesses to the Shriver deed were Adam Brown, the son-in-law of John Statler, and John Stateler, probably son of Jacob.

Fr
Rick Toothman-Thanks
very much for the info on George Stateler/Statler and Elisabeth Smeathers. I
did not have a birth date for him (he is a little older than I really thought
he was, it would seem). There are a few references To him in Monongalia Co
records, but not many, as he left here abt 1796 and most of the county records
were burned that year. A civil suit of his, which I think is summarized in the
Statler MS I wrote, gives about as much as there is. He inherited the
"Statler's Fort" tract under his father's will and sold it to Adam
Shriver but the deed is not now of record and may never have been. The land was
carried on tax books as delinquent in his name for some years even though it
was also taxed to Shriver. (The land books here were terribly neglected and
were not properly updated for many years, for unknown reasons but perhaps just
laziness.)
I found him eventually in southwest KY,
by paging through numerous volumes of the magazine KY GENEALOGIST. This led me
to the power of attorney he gave to his nephew re: supposed lands of his father
back in WV, but nothing seems to have come of it. If I have reconstructed this
family correctly, and I think I have, he was not the land heir of his father in
any case.

1796 Monongalia Co per prop tax list, with a horse and 3 cows. Adam Shriver and
wife moved there too, possibly at the same time-settled on Dunkard Creek, and
their families were buried on the farm. I believe the family cem is still
accessible. Abraham Shriver's dau Christena married my ggg grandfather, Michael

fr Rick Toothman- The MS Susanne
posted is one I wrote quite a few years ago, I think the working date on it is
1990. Nearly all the revised version had to do with new STATLER-HILEY info. I
know Susanne has it but I'm not sure if she incorporated it into the version
she worked up for posting.
All of my KY data basically came from 3
sources: the
The published material here is a bit
jumbled and no one had ever figured out the relationships within the family.
Dates were distorted and there was some historical fiction about them which
also messed things up quite a bit. I've since run into descendants from some of
the families who went to OH, but there are still some things I don't know --
who was the "extra" Michael here in the early 1800s, for one. I
believe Jacob (d 1778) may have had a son of this name, but it is still a
little fuzzy.
How many wives Stephen (d 1783) had, I
don't know. George names his mother as Susanna in the power of attorney, but
there is no wife in Stephen's will. His children look to me, from their
spacing, as if he had 2 wives. I.e., Catharine, who married Hiley, is now known
to be the mother of all of Hiley's children. The oldest known was born in 1757,
so she must be born by 1740 or so at latest. John, the apparent oldest son,
married abt 1766 and is probably born in the early 1740s. Jacob, the next known
son, is probably born before 1750. Then we have a gap of 10 years or so, with
Michael, who is said in some sources to be born 1762, George born 1766 per the
dates you cited, and Stephen, b 1770. One woman could be the mother of all, if
she married fairly young, but there is still a gap, so that some children must
have died or, more likely, there are 2 wives involved.
Unfortunately there seem to be no records
at all to shed any light on this. No church records have been found for this
family, and they lived in Hampshire Co, WV, and later in Monongalia, where may
early records have been lost. Land records are often the only way you find
wives in that period, but there seem to be none re: this family. Stephen did
not apparently own any land in Hampshire Co (despite what George said in that
document), and though he had a claim to land in WV he did not ever own it in
his own name. It was surveyed for his heirs after his death and title was
actually issued to George, as the heir at law under the will. Rick Toothman

The Indiana Historical Society has file of manuscript notes gathered by William H. English in the late 1880's. He intended a volume on members of the two Indiana State Conventions and members of the State Legislature, but work was never completed. Included in this collection are 11 items relating to Grass. Many scrappy or repetitious. Evidently data on Grass was difficult to locate then! None comes from a descendant. Only two give any family data:

I wondered where Smethers came from and how far do they go back to. In what were you related to? It is certainly a delight to hear from you and hopefully we can continue research our family tree. I was searching for Holly Ice because of her post in the Ice forum from two
years ago. Holly (who apparently lives in Ok). I dont know how Holly ended up
in Ok but thats in your neck of the woods, perhaps you can find her? She claims
to have lots to share, but I never managed to communicate with her after
finding her post.
Now we come to the confusing issue of ?who was the gambler?? In her post, Holly Ice says the riverboat gambler was
Jacob Stateler not Harvey Ice. My Grandmother would certainly confirm that
Harvey, her grandfather, was a dear man, who struggled to raise his two
daughters without a mother before her married Anna/Sarah Harris Stateler. Since
Anna/Sarah Stateler had 3 children from her marriage with Jacob (according to
the Holly Ice
post) plus the two from Harveys first marriage to Catherine, plus the 6
children they had together it is hard for me to believe that Harvey had much
time for gambling! So it seems most likely that the gambler was either Jacob
Stateler (how did he die; what became of his 3 children?) or perhaps Kizzys
husband (unk). I dont know whether it
was my relative or yours (or neither) who was the gambler! Eventually we ought
to be able to get to the bottom of this and find out which family is squeaky
clean? and which one is scarlet lettered! LOL
By linking into the Ice family, you have found a genealogy jackpot, since all
of the ICE family is descended from one person. This info can be found on the
internet; Billy Lynn Cunningham (billcham@ovis.net)
has compiled a VERY complete history of the Ice family going back to Fredericke

A few weeks ago, while in southwest PA and researching
family history, I found tons of documentation from both the Greene Co and
Fayette Co genealogy societies relating to various branches of my family
including the Bayles (three separate documents). I have heard the “Tecumseh”
story all my life, but did not find anything written until now that would
associate Tecumseh with Bayles family. My experience in genealogy makes me wary
of “rumors” and “family stories” because I have found they can cause problems
to say the least. BUT, since there is no official government documentation that
I have found to date which provides Tecumseh’s actual date or place of birth, I
feel the knowledge of generations before us must be given credence since we
can’t “invent” the truth, my first discovery was in

The list of Tecumseh’s descendants is too extensive to be placed here but is
available to anyone who may want a copy. Perhaps some of Tecumseh's descendants
can "enlighten" us. My second discovery was in Fayette Co PA. Dorothy
Hammarlund (GGG granddaughter of David Bayles, Mary’s older brother), on family
group sheet lists 2nd child of Jesse Bayles and Mary Marie Monraine as “Mary” b
6 Nov 1763” she notes “kidnapped by Indians at age 6, escaped age 16”; “one
son, b of Indian, named Tecumseh”. To summarize, based on these and other
“first hand” accounts as noted by Christopher Ice a few days ago, it is quite
likely that Mary Bayles Ice is indeed the mother of Tecumseh.

December 21, 2002 -One of the more accurate "Oral" accounts of
Tecumseh's life is a book entitled, "A Sorrow in our Hearts" by Allan
Eckert, Bantam Books, 1992. Also, the PBS series "500 Nations is good, and

these sources of information about historic events and people, about whom there
really are not consistently documented records, I usually use the rule of

correct. When I applied this standard to Eckert's book, I was impressed with
the cross validation of information. Some accounts give Methotasa (Turtle

vast majority give her a Cherokee origin. All the accounts tell that she was

County: Northhampton
Township:
1793 Monongalia Co WV shows Geo Statler resident. Dunkard Creek property levied taxes by John Troy, constable, for failure to appear as wittness in Geo Snider's magistrate court.
1796-Delinquent tax lists, MCR env 44. Monongalia Land Books carry George Statler as a property owner from 1796-1810, inclusive. However, cf Monongalia Surveys, 7:120, a 1785 survey for George Statler, heir of Stephen, 180ac Dunkard Creek, with Monongalia Deeds OS 3:4, Adam and Christina Shriver to Abraham Shriver, 10 March 1803. One call is missed, and there is a discrepancy in one line (215 poles with the meanders of Dunkard Creek in the survey, 311 poles with the meanders in the deed), but land conveyed by Shrivers appears be same tract formerly owned by George Statler. There is no conveyance by Statler, and none to Shriver, nor is there survey for Shriver deed gives no provenance of title or tract hist. Wit to Shriver deed were Adam Brown son-in-law of John Statler and John Stateler probably son of Jacob. (17) Daviess Co., KY, Deeds A: 50-51, cited in Michael L.
