PLATTSBURG, Mo. Dr. Paul T. "Schmidt" Luckenbill, age 79,
Plattsburg, passed away March 23, 2004.
Dr. Luckenbill was born and raised in Kutztown, Pa., where he graduated from high school
in 1941.
He attended Penn State from 1941 to 1943; Bucknell University while serving in the Navy,
1943-1944; and University of Kansas, 1944-1948; interned at the University of Kansas
Medical Center, 1948-1949; was employed as a Navy physician, 1949-1950; completed one year
of surgical residency at Missouri Methodist Hospital in St. Joseph, 1953-1954; and served
as a general practitioner in Plattsburg from 1950 until retiring in 1988.
Dr. Luckenbill founded his first medical clinic on Main Street in Plattsburg in 1950.
Shortly thereafter, Dr. John P. Mabrey joined him as a partner. Dr. Luckenbill established
the Plattsburg Medical Clinic at 400 West Clay Avenue in 1964. Dr. Larry Ozenberger and
Dr. James Sweiger later joined his practice.
He was a "cradle to grave" doctor in the days before medicine was so
specialized. He delivered countless babies. Many days he drove to Missouri Methodist
Hospital to perform surgery prior to seeing his regularly scheduled clinic patients. He
was honored by being named chief of staff of Missouri Methodist Hospital in St. Joseph
(Heartland West). He really enjoyed having been one of the last country
doctors.
During his years of practicing medicine in Plattsburg, Dr. Luckenbills primary hobby
was taking care of the swimming pool and golf course at the Plattsburg Country Club. Over
those years, P.T. (Pine Tree) planted more than 30,000 trees in strategic locations,
enabling him to win eight club championships.
Civic and social affiliations included serving on the Plattsburg School Board, Methodist
Church boards, Plattsburg Country Club board of directors, and Moila Shriners; and he was
a 32nd degree Mason.
Dr. Luckenbill is survived by his wife, Mary Patricia Hales Luckenbill; his children, Paul
T. Luckenbill Jr., Ann L. Rook, Ruth I. Snook and Thomas H. Luckenbill and their families.
He also is survived by five stepchildren, Kathleen Miller, Jennifer Whitacre, Lisa

Rohrbach and Faye Whitehead; and a brother, Curtis Corky Luckenbill.

Bill Hales Jr.
