She was the daughter of the late William Hales and Isabel Bogart Hales, who survive her.

She attended the Platte Center school, and finished at the State Normal,
and taught several terms in the Clinton county school. Later she removed to St. Joseph and
following year she attended the Central Medical college. Soon afterward she went to

Orthopedic hospital of Los Angeles. She had nursed in California, Wyoming, Colorado,
Arizona, Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa and Missouri.
The last fourteen years she had nursed in the vicinity of St. Joseph and Kansas City.

and intensely interested in the betterment and improvement of her profession.
Always she saw the best in humanity, often quoting these lines----
"There is so much good in the worst of us, and so much bad in the best of us, that it
ill behooves any of us to speak any ill of of the rest of us." She was companion and
comrade to her son, often going on hikes and picnics enjoying the great outdoors. Her
letters to her son were received as a treat, as they contained clean, humorous clippings,
cartoons and worth while verses. In her last letter to her son, she finished with these
lines: "laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone, for this sad
old world with all its mirth, has troubles enough of its own."
The funeral services were held at the family home 2603 Montery St. St. Joseph, MO. Rev. C.
M. Chilton officiating. He paid a very fitting tribute to the nursing profession and spoke
of the regard in which she as held by her many friends and patients. The Shrine

remains were taken to Perrin for burial.
