17 June 1942, Wednesday - 4:30 p.m.
My dear -
Three more days before I leave and honestly, I'll be glad when Saturday gets
here. I'se worn out, sugar. Just finished writing to Jane Lowry and told
her what I was wearing - inasmuch as she's going to stand up with us. Got
my outfit yesterday.
Mom and Dad feel back 'coz they won't see me - how I dread saying goodbye
to them. Anyway, they said they want to know I'll look like a bride. So the
dress is white - floor length and I'm wearing a Juliette cap with a wee veil.
Golly, hope you like it. Mom and Dad say they'll haunt us if we don't have
a wedding picture to send them.
I'm afraid one of my last letters was very incoherent and upsetting, darling.
Gosh, I was all keyed up. But I broke down the other night and now I feel
calmer. Ain't I a sissy?
Saw Aunt Mary and Uncle Henry last nite. Say honey, what's this they tell
me? You expect your wife to get a job? Darlin', don't you think I'll have
a big enough job taking care of you and beating off the other women. Son
of ma gun! Seriously tho', they wished us much happiness and peace.
Father Linus is away and won't be back till Saturday. So I'm writing him
a note and Mom will give it to him. Then he can write that letter to Father
Shanahan and Mom will send it in care of you. By the time I get there, you
should have it.
Now I've got to get dressed. The girls are having a Spinster Dinner for me
at Monacco's tonite. Ellie will be here in less than an hour to pick me up
- so goodbye for now, darling.
All my love -

Hey - are you nervous, too?
Mary Helen Vargo and Theodore Eugene Muran
were united in marriage on 27 June 1942. (Click on

Mary Lucille, was born 28 February 1944. From all accounts, the newlyweds
had a normal marriage, although there has been some talk of undercurrents
and tension as Ted had a wondering eye.
Tragedy
struck this young couple on 14 January 1948 when Mary was involved in a serious
automobile accident. She hung on for 15 days before passing away 29 January
1948 of uremic poisoning. She is buried with a stillborn son in Holy Cross
Cemetery, San Diego, CA.
I
never met my Grandma Muran but I know she would be proud of her daughter,
my mom, and the two generations that follow. As a Christmas present to my
mom, I wrote Grandma a letter. Click
