STAPLES' SETTLERS of COLONIAL NEW ENGLAND and VIRGINIA in the 1600's:

This Y67 Study has been made possible thanks to the Staples' settlers' pedigreed descendants, participants of the
Staples' Surname & DNA Project (SSDP) [1].

 Arthur B. Staples, Jr., 12 September 2009

FAMILY TRADITION:
Family tradition claims that the Staple/s who settled in what is now Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Virginia during the 1600's were from the same family. A Staples family historian wrote about Peter Staple of Kittery “The most consistent and authentic tradition connects the family to the eastward, possibly the abandoned outpost of Pemaquid, founded 1625 or earlier. There were other brothers it was said who settled in Massachusetts and Virginia.”[2] Another author wrote “In 1640 three brothers named Staples --- Peter, Thomas and another whose Christian name is now unknown --- arrived at Kittery, Maine. Thomas removed to Fairfield, Connecticut, and Peter remained in Kittery.”[3] Unfortunately no source information was provided by these family historians, so questions remained as to the authenticity of their statements.

1600's SETTLERS OF THIS STUDY:
PETER STAPLE (ca.1642-1718/19) of Kittery, Yorke Co., Massachusetts Bay Colony, now Maine [1][5]

JEFFREY STAPLE (ca1576-1647) of Weymouth, Norfolk Co., Massachusetts Bay Colony [1][7]

JOHN STAPLE (bp.1608-1683), son of Jeffrey,  of Weymouth, Norfolk Co., Massachusetts Bay Colony [1][7]

THOMAS STAPLES (s) (bp.1612 or1614/15-1688) son of Jeffrey, of Fairfield, Connecticut Colony [1][7]

SAMUEL STAPLE, bp. 1628 - xxxx) son of Jeffrey, of Weymouth, Norfolk Co., Mass. Bay Colony, settled in Rhode Island Colony by 1664 [1][7]

WILLIAM STAPLES (ca.1625-ca.1755) of Hanover County, Virginia Colony [1][6]

Y-CHROMOSOME DNA (Y-DNA):
 Y-DNA is passed from father to son and is used in Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) surname projects [4]. When we are using DNA to advance our knowledge about our ancestral family history we are using living participants DNA samples. This means when we match tested surname participants within an approved genetic distance (number of mutations within a haplotype or genetic signature.[4].) we can say with confidence these participants descend from a common ancestor.

RECONSTRUCTING ANCESTRAL Y-DNA:
The SSDP participants of this study, descending from Peter Staple, Jeffrey Staple and William Staples have pedigrees going to their common ancestor.

SSDP participants of this study have their Y67 test results [1][4]. Descendants of Peter Staple and Jeffrey Staple match within a satisfactory Y67-DNA genetic distance. Thus, they can reconstruct the Y-DNA of their most recent common ancestor (MRCA), Peter and Jeffrey, using three easy steps.

First Step; Determine the Haplogroup (hg); Participants must have a common Haplogroup calculated by FTDNA[4] based on their STR Y12 markers which can be proven by SNP testing.

Second Step;
Construct the Founder Modal; Determine the hg R-M269 (FTDNA R1b1b2) "Founder Modal" Y67 Haplotype or genetic signature, Mutation Frequency Rating and mutation Frequency Percent (See Y-DNA 'Table Note:').

Third Step;
Identify the Common Ancestors Genetic Signature;
The Y-DNA of the common ancestor can be reconstructed by identifying the closest participants Haplotype to the Haplogroup Founder Modal that has no Family Branch Mutations. F
or example - See Y-DNA Tables A & B with participants #113808, 5010 and N27910 Haplotypes.

THE Y-DNA HAPLOGROUP FOUNDER MODAL TABLE;
Looking at the Y-DNA Tables below, you will see the R-M269 Founder Modal rated at Mutation Frequency Rank 1, its values and mutational frequency in percent..

FAMILY TREE mutations are shared by the vast majority of the DNA Family Group and defines the groups genetic Family Tree.

FAMILY BRANCH mutations define a participants genetic Family Branch and happen between the participant’s birth date and the birth date of the common ancestor.

RARE mutations have a Haplogroup Founder Modal population sample frequency of 10% or less. The higher the number of rare family tree mutations and the lower the percent, the less Y67 matches will take place. This actually strengthens the Genetic Family Tree.

Unclassified mutations do not have enough family group Y-DNA testing information to be classified as Family Tree or Family Branch mutations.
