Jaroniewski Braden Mills Stephens overview of
|
Stephens Richard Stephens was born around 1842 in England. His wife Elizabeth A (maiden name unknown) was born around 1840, also in England. Their first two children, William (b. c1862) and Elizabeth D (b. c1863), were also born in England. Their third child, Richard H (b. Aug 1868) was born in New Jersey, so Richard and Elizabeth must have brought the family over some time between 1863 and 1868. We have found no information regarding their immigration, however. During the 1870 Census, Richard was working as a miner, and the family was living in Randolph Township (Dover, Morris County), New Jersey. No value was listed for either real estate or personal property. Richard was listed as being unable to read or write. He had not, at that point, become a naturalized citizen. No further information has been found for Richard and Elizabeth. During the 1900 Census, Richard H had married Mary L Williams ten years previous. They had three daughters: Violet (b. Aug 1890), Hazel M (b. 17 July 1892), and Ivy (b. Augu 1894), all born in Michigan. (We do not know the reason for the floral theme of the children's names.) The family was living in Osceola Township (Hennepin County), Michigan, in a rental house. Richard H was working as a miner at the copper mine; Mary L kept house; the three girls were in school. During the 1920 Census, Richard H and Mary L were living alone in a rental house in Leonidas (St Louis County), Minnesota. Richard was working as a foreman at the iron mine. Their daughter Hazel was living in the same town, but was by this time married to Edward J Mills. She had a two-year-old son named Bromby. Hazel died on 23 Feb 1974 in Evelyth (St Louis County), Minnesota. |
