Mills Jaroniewski Braden Preble overview of
|
Preble / Prebble Elber Preble was born around 1805 in Maine. Nothing is known of his parentage. He married a much younger woman named Sarah Ann (maiden name unknown) from New York; she was born around 1823. During the 1860 Census, Elber and Sarah Ann were living in Lynville, Illinois on a farm valued at $500; they had $15 in personal property. With them, they had Saran Ann's son Freeman Walker from a previous marriage, along with their son Willie (born in September of perhaps 1856) and their daughter Ella (b. c 1859). Freeman was born in New York, Willie was born in Iowa, and Emma was born in Illinois, so apparently the family moved around quite a bit. During the 1880 Census, Willie was going by "William", and was living in Lodi (Mower County), Minnesota with his half-brother, who had changed his name from "Freeman" to "Warren". William (who was single) and Warren (who was married) were working as farmers. By the time of the 1900 Census, William had married Cora (maiden name unknown) (b. Mar 1867 in Minnesota) and was living on a rented farm in Bennington Township (Mower County), Minnesota. They had married around 1885, and had two children: Max W (b. Jan 1887) and Mary (b. Jan 1891). Both children were in school. During the 1920 Census, Max W had moved to Saint Louis Park (Hennepin County), Minnesota, and owned his (mortgaged) home. His parents, William and Cora, had retired and were living with him. Max W was still single, and was working as a travelling salesman hawking agricultural machinery. By the time of the 1930 Census, Max W had married Ada L James (b. c1820 in Minnesota). They were listed as having been married for ten years. They lived in a home valued at $3000 in Blue Earth (Faribault County), Minnesota. They had two children living with them: Mary Maxine (b. c1922) and James (b. c1927). Max W was a district agent for an insurance company; the children were in school. Max W is shown as having served in the Great War, but we are unaware of the nature of this service. We think he died on 23 Nov 1940 while living in Hennepin County, Minnesota. Max's daughter Mary Maxine later married Bromby D Mills and had one daughter, Carol Maxine, before Bromby was killed in Europe in World War II. There was some break between Maxine and her brother James, the nature of which we are unaware. But we kids remember "Uncle Jim" fondly and gratefully for having sent us years of subscriptions to "Ranger Rick" magazine. We carefully read and saved every issue, which bailed us out innumerable times when we kids needed to write reports for school, but our mother wouldn't let us out of the house, let alone take us to the library. We never knew anything about Uncle Jim, other than that he perhaps lived in Vermont. When he died (in the 1980's?), Carol Maxine expected a windfall, and was upset when "the lawyers" got to fighting over his estate. She was more upset when she later received a bequest of "only" a few hundred dollars. |
