Mills

Edward J(ohn?) Mills was born in England on 22 November 1891. He immigrated to the United States 1908 and was naturalized in 1914. Both of his parents were born in England.

Edward J first shows up in the 1920 Census, living Leonidas (St Louis County), Minnesota, in a rental house. He was by then married to Hazel M Stephens and had a two-year-old son, Bromby Douglass. Edward J and Hazel M had married Edward was working as an engineer at the local iron mine.

In the 1930 Census, the family was still living in Leonidas Village, in a house that rented for nine dollars a month; the family owned a radio. Edward J was then working as a locomotive engineer at the iron mine. Edward J was not a veteran.

Edward J died on 3 December 1974 in St Louis County, Minnesota, with his last place of residence being listed as Virginia, Minnesota. His wife Hazel M Stephens was born on 17 July 1892 in Michigan. She died on 23 February 1974; her last listed residence was Evelyth (St Louis County), Minnesota.

Bromby Douglass Mills was born 1917 in Leonidas (or Evelyth?) (St Louis County), Minnesota. He grew up to be a lawyer, and married Mary Maxine Preble on 17 October 1942 in Toledo (Lucas County), Ohio. He was later in the Army (entry date and mode unknown). He was killed by a drunk driver as he hitch-hiked toward the European front. (The driver veered to avoid a child on a bike, hit the curb, and flipped the Jeep. The driver and another passenger were thrown free; Bromby was crushed.) At the time of his death on 20 August 1944, he was a Master Sergeant (Service Number $37271890) with the 347th (or 369th?) Station Hospital. A marker was erected for him in Cambridge, England; he was buried in the Cambridge American Cemetary, Plot E, Row 1, Grave 23.

Bromby had one child, a daughter named Carol Maxine, who was five months old when he died. He died never having held her.

Carol Maxine was born on 07 Mar 1944 at 8:05pm in Toledo Hospital. Her mother was living at 320 Kenilworth, Toledo, Ohio. The first was assisted by Dr. John Gardiner. Carol Maxine was a small baby, weighing only five pounds, one ounce, though she was full term.

Years later, shortly after Carol Maxine had her first child, Mary Maxine committed suicide. According to the death certificate, she "[p]laced [a] plastic sack over [her] head after taking multiple drugs." It is our understanding that she took sleeping pills. She died of "suffocation" on 28 Dec 1965. She had been working as the assistant principal of Woodward High School, and living at 2754-A Farrington Drive, Toledo, Ohio. Time of death was put at 1:15am.

There was a suicide note that Carol Maxine, who found Mary Maxine, claimed never to have read, though her husband was familiar with the contents. Carol Maxine and her husband inherited a large number of stocks and bonds from Mary Maxine's estate.
