McLean McLean Jaroniewski Braden overview of
|
McLean / Jaroniewski Daniel John Jaroniewski was born to Dominik Jaroniewski and Apollonia Mylnarek in Toledo (Lucas County) Ohio at 5am on 27 June 1920. His birth was assisted by midwife Frances Garwacka. His mother's maiden name was misspelled on the birth certificate as "Mlynarek", the L and Y having been reversed. Danny's biological father listed his name on the 1920 Census as "Dominy". Dominik was born in Poland, as were his parents, and was a laborer who could read and write, but didn't speak English. He was born around 1895 and immigrated to America in 1912; his naturalization date is unknown. He was 26 when Danny was born, and the family was living at 1148 Indiana Avenue, in Toledo, Ohio. Danny's mother always went by the name "Pauline". Her maiden name was Mlynarek. She was born around 1897 in Ohio, and her parents are listed on the 1920 census as having been born in Poland. She was able to read and write. She had two children, of which Danny was the younger. Leonard was her first child, born about 1917. Leonard ("Uncle Lenny" to us kids) married Jean (maiden name unknown) and had at least two children, of which we are aware of the twins, Vicki and Valerie. The name change... Dominik left Pauline; by the 1930 Census, she was listed as the head of the household, though her brother, Walter Mylnarek, was living with her and her two boys. It was possibly during this time, when Lenny was in his teens and Danny was around ten, that Lenny started going by "Miller" (or some variant), rather than his biological father's name of Jaroniewski. Pauline later married a man named George McLean who did not adopt her boys and then left her. Nothing is known about this man, but Lenny did start using his name. (It should be noted, however, that lenny moved out of the house when McLean lived with Pauline, because he didn't like the man. Lenny was around sixteen at the time.) At some point, possibly while processing the paperwork for the purchase of a house, Lenny was advised that he should pick a last name and stick with it. He decided on "McLean", and advised Danny to do the same. Danny's name was legally changed later. Our father Terence Daniel McLean was born "Terry Dan" on 25 September 1942 at 4.55am at Flower Hospital in Toledo (Lucas County) Ohio. His parents were Daniel John McLean (aged 22) and Mary Alice Braden (aged 21). His father was listed as a bartender at Pauline's Inn, his mother's establishment, and the family lived where Daniel had been born: 1148 Indiana Avenue, in Toledo. The house was now a rental unit, and Pauline kicked out the renters to Danny and Mary could have the place. Terry Dan's mother changed his name on 29 March 1965, just after his first child was born. He likes to tell people that he changed his name from "Jaroniewski" to "McLean" because his father (Danny) was such an awful person. This is not true. His mother changed his name, and she changed his first name, not his last. (When he was a baby, a friend's husband said something along the lines of "What an awful name! What if he grows up to be president? Will they call him 'President Terry'?" This, of course, in the days before President "Jimmy" Carter. The comment always stuck in her head.) Terry's wife Carol Mills also likes to claim that she changed his first name once he became a rising executive in the Kroger Company. This is also untrue. [more to come] |
